@Briggs Jaxon I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Came here to see some details about this radio compared to the couple of bf-f8hp's i already owned. Bonus - got a very good Chirp tutorial that showed me some things I didn't know. Thanks for the video!
Great video! I have this radio and have been impressed with it. It is the hand held I keep in the car at all times and so far it has taken a beating without any issues. Keep up the great work!
These can be modified for use on 1.25 meters. However, you will only get 2 watts. That is okay for 1.25 meter repeater use, if you happen to have any in your region.
@@TheSmokinApe There is a video that shows the conversion on the Baofeng AR-152. The modification is identical on the Baofeng GT-3TP. Just do a search for, "Baofeng AR-152 1.25 meter conversion." It is a rather antisocial video but it is informative.
Great review and introduction! What source for radio frequencies to program can i use here in Germany? I guess the frequencies and their usage differ from country to country, right? Also what antenna do you suggest for best performance or best value for money?
Just received my UV-5R TP with this same cable, would I program it in the same manner and delete the frequency’s it came with? Thanks in advance... Great video!
I just programmed a new GT-3TP following your instructions and ran into a problem. It appears that if you set the vhf uhf lower and upper limit as you instructed, you cannot manually enter any frequency outside that range after programming with chirp. Did I do something wrong or should we not set lower / upper limits?
Hi, is there any Firmware that let´s it also broadcast in DMR mode, so uses digital codecs instead of just analog FM ? I wanted to have a DMR device, but unfortunately bought this device, which standardly has only analog FM modulation. I wanted to have a digital scrambler and digital codec, so not much noise... Thanks.
Hello, just purchased the same radio and cable as in the video. Followed the instructions but continue to get an error that the radio is not responding. Any suggestions?
Another excellent video! Have I ever mentioned I like yellow? How would you compare this to the Radioddity GA-510? I do like yellow...I may need both but I digress.
It’s very similar with them both being Baofengs. I liked this one but ended up giving it to a viewer after only using it for a short while. Glad you liked the video 2H 👍
@@klemenprezelj 2 years after you asked the question, but yes. I got one of these and using Chirp I programmed it to the full set of marine channels. In Chirp I set the frequencies to the correct marine channels, so in 'channel mode' is works and looks just like a ordinary marine radio. But you also have the entire range of 2m frequencies in 'frequency mode' with the limits too, and of course the 70cm band available too on the B option. A great little radio I can use for Ham radio and as a marine vhf.
@@TheSmokinApe oh ok thanks mate. So if the radio can only handle 10V going in, is that right? Technically if I find a USB that regulates 10volts could I rig up some sort of charging capability?

I am a complete newbie and know nothing about this can any one help walk me through setting this up everything I found is confusing. Just want to be able to turn on and use in an emergency and hear others
soooo I am totally new to the radio thing. Did I just damage mine by transmitting on it without the antenna attached? I was just trying to see if they worked straight out of the box after attaching the batteries. :-\
Very good video. You mention that once a transmit range has been set using Chirp even a factory reset can't change it. I made a mistake entering the range. Is there any way to correct this? Cheers, Bruce
@@TheSmokinApe Thanks, that worked. I tried before but didn't realise that upper frequency is up to but not including the value. So I thought I had failed to change the upper limit. G0NSH 73.
You have to make sure your cable and drivers are working, firmly plugged in and the radio volume is up. Use the same radio I did in the video and make sure your chirp version is up to date 👍
@@TheSmokinApe ,was wandering if it is factory preprogramed that it doesnt allow to broadcast on marine channels. If your local police are using VHF / UHF bands unencrypted than yes, transmitting on those frequencies unauthorized is illegal and someone will likely come knocking on your door. Truckers generally use CB which is in the HF band, this radio can not send or receive those frequencies. Hope that helps.
Chirp is good, too bad it dosen't have a lock. That is to say once set an elmer could verify. Then lock out the rig to not xmit outside. Band limits. Elmer saves/sends certification to FCC... I think the word in old Soviet terms. "Compliance officer" we don't want a higher tier of such. ..we as hams don't.
Yeah I figured that was what happened, just picking on you. I have something I wanted to ask a pro also. I'm a volunteer firefighter and we're allowed to have our own portable radios. I need something that supports lower channels like 46.18 but that can also support high band VHF like 152.285. Our dispatch is on 46.18, but our local repeater is the 152 one. What would you recommend for a radio that supports both of those? Side note: I don't care what the FCC thinks, it doesn't have to be approved, I just want something capable of transmitting on those frequencies. The furthest I'd be talking on it is maybe 5 miles max. I was thinking maybe a BF-F8HP?
That’s a pretty wide piece of spectrum, I assume you need to receive and transmit on all those frequencies? Do they supply radios that cover that range? I would think you are looking at a pretty expensive radio.
@@TheSmokinApe I can't just use some private channel or something? I am really frustrated with the cost of these vs walkie-talkie. WHY is the far less capable product so much more expensive? These radios are super cheap! But I have no interest in ham.
To quote Ray “that’s the way she goes.” There is no private channel and using these on certain frequencies might just get someone knocking on your door.

Does that make sense? Unless I'm totally missing something here I don't believe I'll have anyone coming to my door.
I’m not trying to tell anyone what to do, that said these are capable of transmitting on; police, fire and NOAA frequencies... do what you want but operating unlicensed is against to the law... look at some of the FRS radios as an alternative. 👍

Is it possible use Chirp on chromebook, android tablet, and android phone (S8)?
Not that I am aware of...
You possibly can, but you'll need a USB hub to transfer data. I got a new Lenovo tablet with USB C and a multi hub. Gonna try it.

I believe that battery with the F8HP can be swapped out with other 5r variants 👍
