My interpretation of why Paul gets taken over here, when he didn't during Mr. Davidson's song "What do you want Paul?" or any previous point in the musical, is that Paul didn't have a "want" before. He wasn't interested in achieving anything, playing on the softball team, etc., he was satisfied with his life. Without a "want" to strive for, he couldn't be the star of the show. But now he has fallen in love with Emma, so he has a "want", he wants her. That makes him vulnerable to the apotheosis.

i think paul is a great example of a character where acting is sooo much more important to the performance than vocal ability - obviously jon matteson did amazing, and we know from later shows (particularly npmd!) that he's a brilliant vocalist, but some roles just prioritise acting through song over vocal perfection and i think paul is definitely one of them! as much as i do love this song vocally - he did amazing imo, especially considering he had no chance to warm up throughout the show - the highlight for me has always been paul visibly switching between the apotheosis and himself (jon is FANTASTIC, he makes the contrast so stark and eerie), getting to see somebody actively fighting against the possession, and even just getting a chance to see paul's character as expressed through song when he's otherwise so opposed to it. i really appreciate that you seem to agree! as a long-time hatchetfield/starkid lover, i love how much you seem to genuinely enjoy these shows with us.
as a theatre performer i've always been told i'm a much stronger actor than i am a singer and encouraged to lean more into my character in my performances rather than focusing on vocal technique - which i think was absolutely the right decision for me and is sometimes just generally the right decision for a role regardless of who you cast - and i would Kill A Man to play paul and get to do this song, lmao. he's very conveniently in my vocal range and the duality would be sooooo much fun, and i generally love his character, so he's been a dream role of mine for years. maybe now that the rights are available, i'll get my chance! :]

@@gr1mreap3rz15 when telling the story, the character is 100% the most important! Otherwise, you’re just up there for yourself. It’s supposed to be someone else’s story and not about vocal ability at alll! So I 1000000000% agree with this! Now, if you’re doing a musical, the above statement is still true, there is just some habitual training that needs to be done. Knowing that your characters emotions can totally change the tone and textures of your song. So singing healthy is the priority.

Let It Out is my favorite song in the musical. Absolutely ADORE this song. Jon has also said that some of it was at the absolute tippy top of his vocal range, and he hadn't done any warmups before this because of the nature of the show. He's also gotten vocal lessons, so while this one does sound a little rough, he sounds really good now.
Also the soundtrack version of this song does sound a bit better (probably because he could warm up beforehand).

I watched The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals when it first came out (within the first hour). We really had no idea what Jon's voice would sound like and after the middle of act two, I doubted he was going to sing. He seemed like a strong actor, but not a singer.
So when he actually sung, I was shocked. When he sung "never," I was like yeah he's an actor not a singer. But then it went into the solo, it was so good. He had a good voice, but there was something holding him back. All I could think is that he has it. He's not tone deaf. He clearly has range in his voice. I just wished he had voice training because there was *something* there.
Fast forward to Nerdy Prudes Must Die. I don't want to overhype anything, but I heard he got training before the production. What was lacking in this, I felt it came through in NPMD. And you will see soon since I saw it at the first song. I'm excited to see you hear Jon's improvement from TGWDLM.

Edit: There are cast members that have improved over the years of course, but they already have the ability to sing to some degree if they weren't already trained. None have had the chance to completely transform their voice from what it used to be.

Even in the calmer section that seems like it's supposed to be hits moment to shine, you can clearly see by his facial expressions that he's purposely doing the jekyll and hyde thing. He's going full alien on "wouldn't that be nice" and "singing and dancing through life." First off, hi, new subscriber, I love your vids! In fairness to Jamie in Black Friday, I think it was just her characters. She was an off pervy person, if that makes sense, and a straight government employee, and that translated into her singing. She's fantastic in everything else she's in!

    @Ashley Kennedy
You didn't beat up Jon Matteson so don't beat yourself up over it. He is the least vocally trained of the entire company and you can tell. He readily admitted that when talking about this musical. I do think the fact that, despite his lack of training and skill, he was able to hold his own with Team Starkid is pretty impressive. He did say that, knowing what was going to be required of him in "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," he sought out a Vocal Coach like yourself so that he would sound up to par with everyone else. As you mentioned, Jon being the least trained actually works for this character, despite the fact that Pokey is meant to give everyone instant-vocal-training when he turns them. With "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," Jon couldn't lean on that and he knew it. Once you get to "Nerdy Prudes Must Die," you'll hear the difference between Jon in everything else and Jon in that.

Yeah, I think it works better that he’s not singing perfectly… It fits the character and situation really well…
In regards to Jaime Lyn Beatty in regards to Black Friday, she was playing more in the way of character and supporting parts in that show… May have also been sick lol, but yeah… I think the roles she was playing dictated her performance for that show… In terms of how well she can sing, I think this show might be one of the better examples… I think she might have a nice solo in Trail to Oregon… But I think a lot of the time she does more supporting and character roles… Very Potter Musical was probably one of her meatier roles for singing…. Might be another Nightmare Time song you haven’t heard yet… I suppose she was one of the lead characters in Me And My D, but I forget if she had many big singing parts In it… I think she released some music on her own at some point… I forget how good it was… I need to refresh myself at some point…
Either way, Usually with Team StarKid stuff, even with the weaker singers, like Joe Walker, I usually really enjoy the performances…
It might be fun to see your take on Joe Walker actually… He’s arguably one of the weaker performers, but he’s often great to watch regardless… To me at least… He’s had a bunch of big roles and songs too, across the years… I think he’s improved a lot as well… I think sadly he’s stopped doing shows now though… Ah well, just an idea if you feel like it… I suppose if you plan to look at a bunch of the shows for reactions, you’ll probably cover him regardless lol… Although I think one of his stronger performances might be in Spies Are Forever, which is technically StarKid adjacent, rather than Team Starkid per se… A Tin Can Bros. Production… But the three Tin Can Bros. Themselves are all current or previous StarKid members, Joey Richter being one of them… I highly recommend the show either way.

In general I think Jon Matteson does have a great voice and a lot of potential. He showcases some of that in Nerdy Prudes and a little bit in Cinderella's Castle, but I feel like there were a few factors that led to his singing in this show being not as perfect as it could have been.
First, I imagine he feels nervous and pressure having to close the show with a big character song after not singing all evening. On top of that, it's his debut with the company, so he probably also feels pressure to perform well to prove himself to the rest of the cast, and all the fans. And last, he's singing in that high, rock-style, Jeff Blim mode that he is maybe not the most comfortable in.
I agree that it works for the show, especially as a character who doesn't like to sing! But I think he has a better performance of this song in him somewhere.

It's true that the reason for him not sounding exactly the best is because john was very new to singing then, but i agree that it's better this way at least in this song, because he would only sound good if when the aliens had completely takend over, and since he's fighting through it in this song it makes sense

OH, also! (sorry for all the spam LOL i just remembered)- i know a lot of people will keep recommending starkid productions (and im all for it, and for other musicals that you wish to do, specially some broadway classics), but personally i think you should check out VHS Christmas Carol. it is only 45 minutes long, so it will be quite short, and since it is an adaptation of christmas carol, chances are you already know the story and won't actually have to focus on the plot that much and will instead be able to analyse the music and the performances. dylan saunders is the lead, but there's some really nice corey singing, as well as a joey ritcher and lauren lopez duet that is BEAUTIFUL. plus so many more songs!! highly recommend you check it out
