A brilliant communicator. Treats the players fairly and with respect. A lesser ref would simply bark orders. I loved how he is comfortable enough with the players to put his arm on Faf's shoulder. Who else would have the required charm and have earned the respect from the players?! Nigel is the man.

Any game he referees it's a joy to watch, he explains to the players what they doing wrong and why he awarded a penalty, love it when he makes it clear and says: do not spoil a good game!
When he does retire he should be given the job of training the next generation of refs (if he would take the job that is!!). In the meantime a compilation of his best practice in a video to show at Ref training school - or wherever refs are taught!
Nigel Owens is the godfather of ref's. Such a character in the game. Keeps people informed throughout, is fair, but also doesn't take any fuss. Fantastic guy, and a great addition to the game of rugby!
The sentence: "You must be careful with your timing" is very good! The idea behind that is, that the tackle itself is fair, but just late. I use that in handball as a referee as well, and because of the meaning behind, the players always understands what I mean. It's maybe THE best way to communicate to adults in sports. I use so many of Owens' communications in my sport, and they all work, including "this is not soccer/football". He is SOOOO good, and all referees should use his mentality...
By definition the tackle is unfair according to the officials, the supposed bad timing created the unfair tackle (as it left the player in two minds as to tackle or block the kick - he ended up doing neither). He cannot tackle the player in such a manner as to put them in danger (he grabbed him between the legs for one) and/or after the ball has (long) gone which would be late. I don't actually agree that the tackle was late, at full speed it is nowhere near late and the slow motion reply induces a problem in terms of decision making as it plants the seed as being late when it clearly isn't. The ball has left the kickers hand just a split second before but the collision afterwards (the tackle if you will) is clumsy and as I said he has his hands between his legs which can and does create problems. IF the defender had gone for the hands out blocking the kick approach (which wouldn't have seen him make anywhere near as much contact if at all) or had gone to make a tackle in the normal way then it would not have been called a penalty IMHO. It was that he didn't do either and it was a clumsy challenge but not late.

If a player is late in his tackle, I say; "This is not icehockey". And if the players are complaining too much, I say: "Hey, this is not womens-football, stop complaining". And regarding the last one, I know it's probably over the line, sorry, but it works 9/10 times. However the last one also works the other way, so when I referee women, and they complain too much (wich almost never happens, to be fair), I say; "Hey come on, it's not men playing, tone down the complaining, thanks"...

Despite the tremendous differences between them, he reminds me of Pierluigi Collina. Observant, fair, approachable, but beyond everything else - the absolute master of the game they are refereeing.
morethanjustforkicks he has a very clear game sense and even temperament. I think he has some blindness at times but he really is the best in the business. His wit and his love for the game make him remarkable.

I have Been referee in ice hockey and floor ball now for 6 years and I ended up accidentally watch rugby referee videos. This referee seems to be best of the best even I don't know heck about rugby rules! Clear, respectful communication with players. Huge respect!

The mood I'm in this makes me cross. Owens makes a very skilful and difficult job look easy and natural. On a winter day like this, I can't even make a cup of tea right.

I think rugby referees are the most knowledgable of any referees in any sport. No room for dubiety and no arguments about decisions. Respect is given by everyone on the park 👍
When the ref makes the game better - it flows, everyone knows where they stand, decisions are clear and the players just get on with it or are justly dealt with. Top ref and great for the game.
Nige is the best. Not that I haven't seen him make mistakes, but he's a rarity in World Rugby. It's crazy to think this happened on the same day as the atrocious officiating in Wales-Australia, where the Australians chained two deliberate attacks to the head within few seconds and were rewarded by the NZ ref with a penalty against Wales, that saw the game equalized.

What a great referee, not a bully, not condescending, not disrespectful and never angry or arbitrary. All sports need refs like him. As been said many times, Rugby is a thug game played by gentlemen. That applies to the refs as well.
