There is a vested intetested here to not want you to go spacers when they can up sell you springs instead. I've run spacers and never had issues, plenty of guys haven't either, so some research where you aren't going to be sold something first

    Good video ronny 👍
Remote res also does more than just cooling, the resevoir also gives somewhere for the oil in the shock to go when the shock fully compresses. Standard shocks generally are not full of oil, because if they were, the shock would hydrolock when fully compressed. Theres a nitrogen and oil mix in standard monotubes. 👍

Hey ronny! glad to hear the boys answers to my question. After looking into it more the solution i ended up going with was resetting the primary leaf pack. As the car wasn't over sprung but just due to age the leaf packs were riding on the secondary load bearing leafs.

to answer the weight debate when adding something on to existing tray vs purpose built off the chassis
your standard setup out of the showroom gives roughly 250kg out of the 500kg weight limit..
you will be needing to consider a gvm upgrade to cater for the excess weight because you have to consider the weight of the existing tray + the camper or storage bins and fuel capacity on top of that..
downgrade of suspension means you carry less just because you have around 1 tonne capacity doesn't mean you can tow 2= tonnes off the back..
whether it be a kitted out trailer or something in the region of 23 foot caravan
combined what is installed in the back of the ute or full saloon 4x4 body
you may need to consider a 6x4-6x6 conversion to offset the excess weight you are going to carry.
Note this may also lead to a chassis rail upgrade to support excees weight as what ever the base chassis may buckle under the weight of the add-ons you do

A remote reservoir adds almost no cooling unless the hose is extremely short. The oil is moving back and forth within the hose, not circulating to the reservoir. If the reservoir has valving in it that does help by removing some of the heat load from the shock.

  • @CrazyGreek80

BDS, Fabtech, Procomp are some lift kits here in the states which supply everything you need to go from 3"-6". Also if you go to a 35" tire could be a 1-2" lift depending on what you started with 31" or 33" tire. So you could be doing a 2" lift but with tires could be higher.

Question? I have a 2017 double cab 4x4 Toyota Tacoma I originally put 3" spacers on front & 1 inch spacer with 33" tires 285/75/16. After I had a front steel "small" WARN bumper installed for my WARN Winch I lost over an inch of height. Then my brand new tires started to rub, all this was done in two weeks time frame. So then I return the original tires for 32" tires 265/75/16 got rid of the front 3" & rear 1" spacers. Changed the complete front & rear suspension to a front Bilstein 6112 Coilover (2" max) & rear 5160 shocks (w) remote reservoir, plus added a single leaf spring pack to rear. These Bilstein shocks have a life time warranty but if I was to use a spacer in conjunction with the front 6112 series Coilovers then it voids the life time warranty. I still don't have the 3" height like I wanted. After watching a few TH-cam videos KING Coilover Shocks has a "specialty order" made 700lbs front springs to combat the extra weight for front suspension, & to give you 3" of height in front of vehicle. It seems no other shock manufacture company has this option. I guess everyone just uses 600lbs springs. Not sure how folks are getting 33", 35', 37' tires with a full or partial steel front bumper and winch system on the Tacoma's, & Hilux's. Can you please give me your guidance.

  • @derecknielsen1430
    @derecknielsen1430 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Biggest benefit of the remote res shock is NOT for the cooling. It does do a little bit of that, but the main purpose is to have 100% oil inside the shock body as well as to separate the oil from the nitrogen gas.

  • @yorkchris10
    @yorkchris10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Works Performance advised going with spring rather than making up for lack of spring with damping. They had a triple rate spring. A lot of shock mounts can't handle more than stock loads.

The parabolics look like a good idea to put on the front of an 80s hilux while keeping the standard ones on the back for load carrying.
Having the leaf packs sit on top of the axels also means there is less chance of them getting caught up.

Thanks for this video, it's clarified several of my questions very well.
(I miss the TH-cam private messaging, b/c this may be more appropriate there, but here we go...)
And I still have a couple questions regarding the puck, strut-top spacers, commonly called levelers. ;)
I know I know I know. ;) I understand the physics and I get the concerns. I see how relocating the strut down ineffectualizes the bump stop and you did a great job explaining that at full stuff/compression, the coils can bind stopping suspension travel and the shock tower can deflect that energy and fail. I understand these main concerns are traveling at some speed with high impact (could be corrugated roads or even a city street with a harsh dip). The video clarified my understanding as I'd thought the shock itself would compress fully and fail, but you've suggested the shock has more travel than a fully compressed spring.
My application is a 2007 GX 470 with KDSS (USA), LC120. I understand FULLY that a real lift is the way to go BUT I'm not in that place yet for this car and I just want a little more clearance under the front end (factory is 8.3" and with my oversize tires I was at about 8.75") It's still a family hauler (NOT a mall crawler as it does leave tarmac), road trip car, car-camping and weekend get-a-way light-medium off road duty rig. I live in Moab, Utah, USA so weekend camping trips include canyonlands national park (elephant hill, the maze, Colorado mountains around Ouray, etc. etc.).
So, with all that background, I'm fully pleased with this rig's stock capability and suspension travel. I like the variable valve dampening in the sport-comfort ride control that comes standard with this car. I understand replacing for a coil-over or classic longer shock-spring setup will mean pulling the rear airbags for coils and that I'll lose the ride control. As such, I'm testing a very low cost spacer. Again, I've read and heard the warnings and please read me out.
I have a 0.75" strut-top (not compressing the spring, but on top of the assembled strut) spacer, which in this rig affords 1.5" lift at the skid and fender clearance over the tire. I hypothesize that if I can relocate the bump stop down 1/2" to 5/8" inch it will be functional again and I will still otherwise have full compression and droop. The community supports that this puck is close to the threshold for the stock ball joint movement so that I can still achieve full droop without binding or damage, and the bump stop correction will rectify the full stuff/compression concern that comes with these spacers. I've had it aligned back to spec and it rides perfectly. I have not yet had it off road but i have a trip planned in a few weeks where it'll see articulation and use. I plan to have some iteration of bump stop mod in place bu then, whether it's just a drop spacer and stock bump stop or something like the wheelersoffroad bump stop.
    wheelersoffroad.com/i-25490332-wheelers-front-superbump-bumpstop-set-for-2005-tacoma-2003-4runner-2007-fj-cruiser-2007-tundra-01superbumpkit.html
Thank you for your time and consideration of this exhaustive question and I look forward to your reply as well as more videos.
    Ciao- MW-
    **EDIT**
I fabbed 1/4" steel spacers for the bump stops. it's perfect. the sacers afforded the front clearance I wanted. I have adjustable lift stock in this rig's rear airbags, so on trail the rear can be lifted an additional 1.6" EVEN when fully loaded with 1300# of kit for a week-long trip.
PSSST, RONNY, give me a message when you come to Moab this year (2020)! I saw your Moab videos, great stuff and awesomely shared with the new experiences that is my home and playground.

However I have to disagree with the 'not having to put caster correction bushes in a Jimny with a 2in lift'.
After lifting my Jimny by 2 inches the steering would not self correct. After the caster correction was installed, it was a lot better. (although not perfect).

Coils can carry weight fine (Defender, Patrol, G wagen), the real benefit over leafs is clearance, articulation and comfort. The cost of the coil conversion for a 70 series though makes the established coil sprung vehicles look like bargains.

I have a properly done 50 mm on my 80 (tjm progressive springs, ICON VS2.0 shocks, control arms drops, longer shocks, sway bar extensions, etc) and I also have a sway bar disconnect kit for the front. I find that the whole swaybar thing is very dependant on your system, and type of wheeling. When I'm doing undulating terrain or very technical it helps a lot to smooth things out, but I also also tore my brake lines out in front. be careful about that. Other people say to leave the front in and take the back out since the back flexes more anyway and it gives you more traction on loose climbs. in either case I've run high speed without the bars and its not terrible, but its not safe...find a disconnect kit, don't remove them.

Well I just installed a 2.5” dobinsons IFS in an 07 FJ with the dobinsons UCA and a dif drop kit. I thought it would be better to stick with the manufacture then to go with a different UCA with adjustability in the ball joint position. I’m hoping this doesn’t cause issues like your mates are saying. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

We had our Prado 120 from new 2008 until sold mid 2018. Has had 4 types of shocks, Bilstein were poor back then, the Dobinsons MRR's with remote reservoirs failed in the NT outback trip, and replaced them in Alice with Ironman FoamCell shocks. The reason we think the Dobs fail on the Prado is that the remote tube is at the bottom of the shock - should have been at the top with less movement. The Ironman shocks were way better than any of the previous shocks we had. Moved to a 79 series now with Ironman Foamcells and they are excellent. Foamcells can be revalved, they are ok in standard but excellent when the valving is altered to suit the actual vehicle weights and type trips etc.

First time I've ever seen Bilsteins described as a poor shock.

    • @photohiker01
      @photohiker01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There were major issues with the Bilsteins in 2008 Prado 120 and later 150. The general supplied Bilstein shocks for the Prado 120 back then were numbers: BE5-712/713. The two main issues were the valving, and the length of the shocks on the lifted Prado. Ours were supplied with the lift and the 712/713's and they did not work well and the valving was terrible for outback trips. Plenty of information on the pradopoint about the shocks. www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/-120-series-discussion-only/suspension-120-series/29062-bilstein-struts-and-shocks-lengths-and-valving Now, there is more information about the correct Bilstein shocks and spring rates for the Prado. Unfortunately, that info and different Bilsteins were not easy to find in 2008.

If a top hat spacer is fitted above the strut, to achieve the aforesaid "lift", then the static equilibrium point would still shift down. But would the strut's extended length also cause the down travel to increase beyond the previous droop limit. Would this mean that the wheel travel in this case is not conserved and has increased? (by an amount equal to spacer thickness) ?
Thanks for the video and effort in explaining it practically.

Great vid, guys and RD, brilliant series idea cheers.
When empty in my N70 used to just throw a couple of sandbags in the back for a comfier ride in town cheap hack done, but honestly never bothered me that much, but lest ya leafs are they’re when you need em .
I’d also wonder what tires these guys are running and what sort of ratio of height to tire width they are using, another issue for street stance when taken off road or even back roads sealed,, imo far too many city farmers big rims, low height, t’s a truck not a stance look at me wagon that most are used for in the city, why so many using spaced kits to lift they’re trucks as well, but that’s today for you, I know farmers as well that go through shocks on they’re Outbacks, MUVs, Rangers like hot knives through butter and complain the cars are shit house, you guys covered it the stock shocks being over driven way to fast on long corrugated gravel roads over heating esspecially under loads, used to see it constantly on one road I lived on guys doing over 100km in 70 series utes with all sorts on the back daily. Also putting others at risk, more than a few times recused people in a creek or a ditch, Ya can’t fix stupid or cheap.

A thought, and a question, regarding removing a sway bar ... (assuming all brakelines etc. are properly extended/lengthened) what if you have IFS and you installed adjustable air ride suspension within the coils? ... if you pumped up the psi would that not compensate for having removed the swaybar? ... also by nearly deflating the airbags won't you regain most of the "removing your swaybar" benefits? Many thanks in advance for your responses.

Hey guys nice vid very helpful. Couple of Quick questions for your suspension experts,
I know you don’t recommend the strut spacer kits, but if I use washers/extended bump stops, to lower the bump stops so the lower control arm still has the same travel to hit the bump stops as it did before the strut spacer, I shouldn’t run into broken struts right?
I don’t do serious off-roading more of a show pony really with an XL ranger that dreams of being a raptor,
also I can’t find standard height coil spring replacements with an increased constant load for a steel bull bar... only raised ones any recommendations for adding a bull bar to factory height 2016 px2 ranger with out a lift?
Cheers guys I know it’s a year old but I thought I’d try.

Very interesting video and information, I didn't know that a 2" lift actually gave you more wheel travel than a 3" lift not done right. On that note, if you do the lift right will a 3" have more wheel travel than a 2"? I'm also a bit confused regarding 4" lifts. It's getting to the limits because as mentioned the arm is now touching the coil but I'm not sure if it's the max but still provides more wheel travel than a 3.5" or 3" lift or because the 4" lift is getting to the limit a 3.5" or 3" lift actually gives better wheen travel? Additionally, this is for IFS vehicles, but for live axle vehicles can you lift up to whatever amount you want without affecting vehicle performance and wheel travel?

Great video with great information although QLD registered vehicles are pretty much maxed at 2 inch suspension lift to stay legal.

@@Reaper_787 most definitely lol. But pulled my big 7 inch kit out with do in sons springs and iron man pro shocks down to a 2 inch kit. Looking to go back to just a general family 4x4 with only a little bit off road do the cheaper option

@Billy 3 weeks ago ARB quoted me $1600 for leaf and shocks on my Suzuki Sierra. EFS got the nod at $700! The $900 I saved bought the winch. ARB stands for Always Really Broke if you are buying their gear.

Have you made an episode specific on portal axles. For solid axle lift options or conversions from IFS to solid for portal options. Pros and cons. What are your thoughts and would you consider them on your 79?

is this still actual? I believe the parabolic spring leafs come now in constant loads up to 700Kg, depending on the car. For example, for my 2016 Ford Ranger, Fulcrum sells 300-500Kg constant load Formula Parabolics.. And I've seen others selling 700Kg constant parabolics for 70 series (TerrainTamer4WD). Now, they may try to bull people, I don;t know; but I thought this video is 6years old at this mom, and parabolics are now ..better?? Thanks Ronny!!

I'm wondering about the Dobinsons MRA shocks/full kit for my 2016 Tacoma TRD offroad. I currently have a RTT, rock sliders and a SSO hybrid front bumper & winch (synthetic line), and when I drive to/from work I drive unloaded (rtt comes off in winter, and I add 200-300lbs of weight in the bed (sand bags, for traction), I want the MRA as most of the offroading I do is corrugated roads with lots of potholes at high rates of speed 45-50MPH, but I also want good road manners, the good and bad of this suspension/shock if there are any known issues, I like that they have more adjust-ability than kings, fox, icon, and they are fully rebuild-able, this is my Daily driver.. I am building my truck for cross country trips in the coming years... thanks.

Hi Ronny, next time please ask the experts about Landcruiser 100 series IFS. Can I lift it 2.5"-3" front and 3" at the rear to clear my 35" tyres? for this particular rig, do you guys recommend non-adjustable UCA(Blackhawk) or SPC adjustable UCAs? many thanks

when you say 2"-3" lift for IFS, where are you measuring the lift?
Is it ground clearance at the skid, is it hub to fender difference, is it spring height difference?
    Where's the "lift" measurement taken?

  • @Christian76S

LR3, talking air suspension. no probs with loads, of course. but no chance to measure temperature of the dampers either, cause they're burried inside the air struts. 1. how can I check if they're still healthy, except from test stand? 2. does it make sense to upgrade the dampers (let's say some bilstein) when swapping the struts anyways, cause rubber is about to be dried and worn?
