    • @letBIGGIErest
      @letBIGGIErest 2 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      Yes, but 87 takes is incredibly excessive. Most songs have 10-15 takes max. Whitney Houston performed “I’m Your Baby Tonight” in one take because she wanted to go the mall before it closed. Billie’s just an insecure vocalist. I was confused why they showed this - like this isn’t something you should be proud of.

I think that with his help she can make amazing art, not necessarily the strongest live singer but still good and I enjoy listening to her live or on album although the album always sounds far better because it's a controlled piece of art they created and could perfect whereas live, well....
      But his two solo albums are in my regular playlist as well as all of her music. Big fan, really doubt they know what a cardiologist is though. That's the home schooling for you.

      @@ictlab1345 This is also part of building the live performance. Singing the song over and over again, figuring out the “best” way to sing each part and then editing it together creates a guide. Then she can learn to sing, live, a version of that song heavily informed by the guide in one pass, with variation informed by the live atmosphere.

  • @andgar923
    @andgar923 2 ปีที่แล้ว +429

    *sigh* People claiming she is "fake" or that "this isn't music" don't know what they're talking about. Editing has existed in music recording for ages. Your favourite artists did this as well, often recording multiple takes to capture the correct one. The main difference is that this is done digitally instead of using a razor to literally cut the tape. Artists did have to practice more to get a performance correct because editing was a longer more arduous process than it is now. Yet even after hours and hours of practicing, there was still some editing done to some degree.
    Billie IS SINGING THE SONG!
    Billie IS STILL PERFORMING THE SONG!
    Billie is just a perfectionist, so she selects the take she's happy with out of the dozens and dozens of takes. Again, regardless of the edit, SHE STILL SUNG THE SONG!

    • @iamnobody2
      @iamnobody2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      its one of the reasons i love her and finneas, they have their vision for a song and by god do they make sure they get it, every nuance is on purpose and it all fits together so perfectly. not only this, but the amount of time they work on the phrasing, tone, embellishments of the vocal, its just. exactly. perfect.

      You don't know what you're talking about. I'll give her the credit because she is still actually singing those takes. But it's a little deceptive in terms of it not being a real performance.
      If someone has the tech and time, anyone can do what she is doing and create a good final product. I wont go so far as to say she's not an artist or lacks talent, because she clearly has the talent and is an artist. But it is a little deceptive

    • @mcdougles
      @mcdougles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really... with tape cutting you cannot do such small parts... and as you mentioned it was a long and expensive process so, the singer had to perform really well all the versions which could be used for editing. They didn't had a chance to make 10sec part form 79 pieces on a tape.

      This is nothing special or unique to what they do or their process. You're clearly a very excited fan but calm down a little. Every single artist does this. She was just being honest and showing Dave something that most other artists will not tell you. Back in the day with 2-in tape with analog recording this was a much much harder process. However it's been done since the early days of recording. Nothing unique. Very common.

      Billie is NOTORIOUS for her perfectionism. On several songs when she layers her vocals over and over and over again (sometimes more than 50 times), she's said in the past that she will do numerous takes to get not just the breath and pitch and volume right, but to get the same exact vowel and consonant placement, the same sibilance, the same everything. That takes a LOT of control.

    Musicians even do this when they film live concerts for broadcast/streaming later. They'll take shows from multiple nights and edit them together to look like it was all done in one constant live show. They have the singers and band members wear the same clothes for each show so that it all looks seamless. The main goal with any entertainment piece is giving the audience a perfect-looking product.

    As a vocalist with minimal recording experience (but lots of live), learning about this stuff is so fascinating to me. My band did some recording recently and due to time constraints, I only got to do 4-5 takes for most of the songs. I would die to have the chance to record like this and basically just micromanage the perfect possible sound out of hundreds of recordings. Even just being able to explore the difference between minute changes, like slightly speeding up or slowing down vibrato, adjusting the vowel sound, having a more pronounced consonant... god it would be amazing!

      What's happening here is that Billie creates an audio image of what she wants in the final production sound. Then she sets out to construct it over a series of takes. The files in the Logic Pro system support what she and Finnie want to do. The first Ocean Eyes upload was a practical miracle, A lovely song, but technically what most would have considered impossible.

    This is just a general message to Netflix, not about this video in question. Can you please... please, please, please, urge movie developers to put the close caption at the bottom of the screen like it's being for years before then. It's easier to read, doesn't obstruct actors faces, and the eyes are most relaxed when looking down, not up to the top of the screen. Eye fatigue is common when reading a movie for a few hours and your eyes are dancing all over the place, yet it's easier when it's just from the bottom to the middle of where the action is taking place. I'm hard of hearing, thus I rely profusely on captions. Not everyone looks at the screen when they talk in movies, so I can't read their lips. So please urge them, or you Netflix, allow an option of where to post captions on the screen. This is important to me. I can't watch movies well enough with the captions in the top or middle of the screen. At the bottom, please. When I see some of your movies with the top or middle captions, I usually just stop watching it and put it on my no-watch-list. It's getting all too common.

      Allow me to add another example here. When people read books or read text from their cellphone, they look down at it. This is not just a privacy reason, this is a biological knowing that, yes, your eyes are most relaxed when reading and looking down. Though when looking down at the monitor screen, you're not so much looking down to a book, you are still focusing downward to a story.

      I just wish there was an option in Netflix to allow you to choose where you want the captions to appear on the screen, as they allow the size and color of it already. That's excellent. I prefer green color of captions because white doesn't display well in some movies that have a lot of snow or cloud in it's environment. Yellow is good too, but green is softer on the eyes after hours and hours of watching movies.

    • @DovahHouse

    • @hauntedasylum8194
      @hauntedasylum8194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone once told me why green is relaxing to the eyes, and that's because much of the forest is green. I don't remember the details of what else he said, my ears are bad. But, yellow, red... stand out too sharp, and eventually fatigue my eyes. So to each your own. Try different colors and see what works for you. For me, also, the captions can't be too large else I'll have to spin my head to gather all the words and then I miss the actor action. This is an issue I wish movie developers would take the time to experiment. I have not being in a movie theatre in a long time because I can't hear actors talking off screen no matter how loud is the sound. Hard of hearing does not necessarily improve with loudness, it's an issue of comprehension. I hear sounds, but language needs to go through another stage in your ears.

I do agree that 87 takes for one vocal line is excessive but every modern producer and singer tries to make their song as perfect as possible with comping techniques. This only shows that she goes for artificial imperfection instead of natural imperfections.

The fact that she was able to sing different parts and assemble them together only shows how focussed she is to the details of each line she's singing because this is seamless.

Cause recording vocals and producing a track is a hard work and it takes hours of recording, cause we want to deliver the best possible sound to people so they enjoy it 😌

Lol just a little proper perspective that her brother is actually the one who's recording her singing. Billie eilish has limited skills in that area but probably more limited to something like the tascam handheld recorder they often use catching various sounds etc. She's not operating the laptop and assemble in songs the way her brother can. That takes a much deeper level of knowledge.
      They use logic Pro on iOS. Actually I've heard him mention an interviews at a certain point the price for that application dropped greatly and became affordable. I remember that very well back in the day as well. Around that time I was being trained on pro tools so I never got into logic pro. However I do think a lot of people suddenly became capable of affording that software when they did that price drop. Those applications used to be very expensive. Around 800 or 1,000 bucks. At a certain point they came way down and you could get apps like that for a hundred bucks to 400 bucks. That was when he really started learning how to use the software.

      @@user-rv7ge1tc4l yes yes congratulations you watched the movie they have. I'm well aware they are both equal parts creators with the content but her creating it keeps it relegated to her mind and her notebook without her brother. If not for him none of it would be recorded at all, or very little. Definitely would not develop into the awesome songs that result from her brothers effort. Without him she would have to find a completely new producer to work with to develop her ideas. He is the main creative force behind what the end result is. However the end result doesn't end up that way without her ideas as well. It's cool that they work together to develop the songs 50/50 but when it comes to making the final product he's like 80% of it.
