Although underwhelming from the exterior to me, the interior makes up for it based on the footage you were able to shoot. Also, thanks for linking the paint article. It should make for a good morning read.

No doubt about it Tom, the $100k vehicle club is a great place to be. Mercedes treats their customers with many choices - if you're in the club. If the EQS 580 doesn't wow the crowd, just pick up a traditional S class as the second, third or (you get the picture) car. Personally, I'll just watch the neighbors cruise silently by in their electric Mercedes. Excellent review, as always, Tom!

Fantastic review of a gorgeous vehicle (at least the interior in my opinion - exterior: meh). The amount of tech of the EQS scares me. I had a CLS for about a year and it was in the shop for about 7 months of my "ownership" experience due to tech issues and it didn't have nearly the tech of EQS.

That optional charger cord is only Level 1, so it is only for 120 volts and will provide only 2 miles per hour of charge. I retained the mobile charger from my 2014 Model S coupled to a TeslaTap adapter so I can charge at the maximum AC rate of 9.6 kW at a NEMA 14-50 outlet. Funny that I have not seen a single reviewer note the lack of a 12 volt cigarette lighter type plug. Especially irksome since the standard puncture kit includes a 12 volt compressor! I now carry a GoLabs 300 watt power station in my trunk so I can power the compressor in the event of a puncture. I really like my Nautical Blue paint.

Full disclosure, my order for the Air just became official so I will be canceling my EQS reservation. As a current S Class driver I love the comfort of the MB so I will be taking a step back in that regard, however, I look forward to the bi-directional charging offered by the Air. The EQS with bi-directional charging is only available in Japan. I believe by the end of the decade will have we will have many solar powered homes with battery storage so the grid is used only when needed. Add in bi-directional charging and you have home battery storage that you can also use to travel. Stay healthy and great work! It is appreciated.

Update after 20k miles and the latest software update (there have been a few). The car is better than ever! Some of the first ones including mine had and issue with "hesitation" when crossing 25 mph, that has been completely corrected. The MBUX system has gone through a few "builds" and is now in my opinion, completely flawless, again, those first cars had some bugs, it is now utterly bug free. The updated version of the self driving system is simply second to none, you can spend up to 2 minutes completely hands free without the system telling you to get your hands on the wheel on a straight road and, even then, a soft touch will make the nanny go back to sleep, regardless, I always maintain my hands on. In summer I regularly get 380 miles of range, while at -20F I still get 270! The charging net work is still developing but fast chargers are finally getting more ubiquitous and next year it will also include Tesla superchargers. The peak charge rate may not be the fastest in the market but the charging curve is, thus this is a vehicle that charges fast and flat deep into the pack. Best car Ive ever owned and best EV regardless of price. I love it.

I think Mercedes has a great product. I am looking forward to the EQE 53AMG 4Matic+ version. Mercedes needs to price appropriately to be competitive with Tesla Model S LR. When Mercedes begins to "nickel and dime" you with ticky-tack options like no sunshade in the rear or rear passenger climate control systems...then it becomes apparent they are still following their ICE molds...

Consider the car I tested is the base trim with a few extras. Admittedly, I've only been in a Model S a few times but even so, the EQS is head and shoulders above the Tesla in ride quality and interior appearance. So this is priced appropriately.

KBB guesstimates that the Pinnacle option will set you back $150K. Which is right in line with the MB S580 Executive with all the important options (4matic, Burmeister, HUD,etc.: $153K). Since the gas version will travel 500 miles without stopping (20 gallons @ 25 mpg. 2 gallon reserve) and then fill up in the middle of nowhere in 15 minutes, I would still have to give the nod to the gas guzzler.
Once these fellows are able to get the range up to 500 miles I believe the general public will be onboard.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Do you often travel 500 miles? You'd be in a very small minority. Having lived with these, on a day to day basis the EV is more practical. No trips to the gas station. A 10 second click at home and you're done. No oil change service trips. And the EQS driving experience is arguably better.

    • @tommihelich2613

Beautiful car, but I understand why some people are underwhelmed by the EQS' styling. For me, the side windows have too many 'cuts' (if that's what they are called). There are six windows/panels, plus the B pillar, between the A and C pillars, which gives it a cluttered look. Also, the taillight shape looks similar to those on other manufacturers' older/cheaper cars (example: 2000 Ford Escort ZX-2)

Options like rear wheel steering and heated seats are already installed, but you have to pay extra to activate them> Mercedes said not all drivers want rear wheel steering, and some argued they are doing this to save cost, but are they really saving cost? Mercedes already installed these options at the factory, it doesn't cost them more to installed these options, and I doubt it cost Mercedes a lot to activate the codes for options.

While this vehicle as a whole is really fantastic, I have a gripe about the back seats. For a $120k vehicle there should be more amenities in the rear. Yes, the seats are plenty comfortable and there is a grand amount of space. But that's about it. My 2014 Ford Taurus SHO has a power rear sunshade and heated seats in the rear. And living in the north Seattle area it does get chilly, and my family has learned that heated seats are a great thing. Maybe we are spoiled. But this is a Mercedes. The front two seats are perfect but its like they they penalized the rear passengers for front seat luxury.

Under the "hood" of the Mercedes-Benz EQS models, there's something called "HEPA-filter", which is the most sophisticated air filter in the industry and which needs a certain space in the front of the car!
It's not a "law", that every EV "has to have" a fucking ridiculous "frunk", like Tesla vehicles have.
As far as I know, mankind absolutely survived the last 100 years in car history without having "frunks" in "very big four/five door plus big trunk" cars!
Just because Tesla has come up with something like a "frunk" (which by the way is very usual for Porsche 911 and old VW drivers), doesn't mean at all, that every other carmaker has to do the same thing with its bigger "four/five door cars", you fucking annoying clown!
Such a HEPA-filter is much more usefull for driver and passengers, than just having a shitty and superficially "alibi- frunk", especially when such a big four door (five door) car like the EQS has enough storage space in the rear of the car, just like an S-Class has!
Just shut the fuck up you annoying smart ass, because nothing of your comment does make sense!

re: "As a result they have to put a urinal, er, washer fluid filler on the front fender." (other than a price i can't afford) this is actually the only criticism I have of this car. though I don't mind the hood not opening, but if they were going to ruin the clean looks of the design by putting a funny shaped door in the fender, they should've at least put it on the OPPOSITE/PASSENGER side of the car where it can't be seen by the driver. obviously the charge port is passenger side rear and you'll be using that every day (or maybe the Butler) but how often does one top off washer fluid...? every 3 to 6 months...? yeah, there's no reason for the reservior to be there on LHD market vehicles.

My neighbor has one in black, it looks quite good, haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I have an S-Class. I would prefer an electric S-Class but I would have no issue driving this either. Also who are these people with drivers because I have never had a driver, neither have any of my friends, colleagues and neighbors with S-Classes, 7 series, A8s etc. I have the Chairman and CEO of a Fortune 50 company in here and he has an S8 and he drives himself. Even all the people with Rolls Royces drive themselves too. My one neighbor with a Phantom only ever gets driven if he has a game and even then it is his brother that drives him, other than that he drives himself. Being driven around with a driver just seems like such a weird thing to me. Ironically my previous house had staff quarters and a staff wing for a driver and maid which I never had and the guy who built it and owned it before me didn't have those either which makes it even weirder that he built staff quarters. 🤔Also there's a lot less work being done than you think, a lot less as you can tell by the fact I am watching TH-cam and typing this comment. LOL

Great review. How do you fill wiper fluid? Cut the main breaker in the event of an accident? I can’t believe they lock the hood. What about tires, they looked like winters. Is in car driving sound able to be turned off?

    • @DrivenCarReviews

Wiper fluid- 2:40. Pretty sure breaker is in the main cabin. What are you going to do under the hood, check the oil? Bridgestone all-seasons. Sound can be switched off, faint enough so it doesn't bother in the first place.

And to find a good mechanic that actually knows how to fix these over engineered cars will be a nightmare. The future mechanics needs to be equally good on computers/electronics as in holding a wrench and those kind of people are one in a million and probably does something more advanced than fixing cars.

@@Davoodoox1 Yup. Fifteen years ago I had a neighbor who worked on Mercedes, and he told me about an older S Class that needed its air suspension rebuilt; the bill was $9000! And that was 15 years ago. I'm old enough to remember Sears advertising shocks for $7.99 plus installation. My brain can't make that leap from $8.00 to $9000.00.

    -more toilet paper
    -kids after soccer practice

You forget on top of the $126k most dealers are putting a $10,000 markup. So its really $136k before taxes. So expect to shell out close to $150k for the EQS. Not such a bargain.

Super interesting spec! Must be a really early build, vin less then 1000 or there abouts. It has the 21 inch AMG wheels but certainly not from the factory. Looks like it's missing the standard sport exterior (early built 580s were built before MB decided to make it standard) as well as the valet and beginner drive modes.

I heard the driving dynamics of the EQS is horrendous according to a lot of reviewers:
"And then, there’s the horror-show dynamics.
The steering is so overboosted it feels like there’s no physical connection to the wheels.
The brake pedal is so nonlinear it feels like you have a hole in a brake line.
And the body is genuinely Out. Of. Control." - Jason Camisa
Genuine mistake of a car. Such a shame because the real S-Class is so much better." - Throttle House Guys

re: "Over 90% the same but at a much lower price." or so goes the "theory". despite the announced lower MSRP, the reality has been most of the one's they've been showing us actually BREAK the $100 grand mark bringing it firmly into EQS territory. hopefully the lower price ones can be gotten "build to order" (without ADM).

It seems to have the technology done, but it is not beautiful. The interior is stunning, but the exterior just looks bloated and formless. Surprising too that most of these new EVs still haven't matched Tesla for practicality and storage space. Since they are dedicated platforms, they don't seem to take advantage of that opportunity from inception. The range, like you said, just isn't an issue assuming you can find operational charging stations outside the Tesla network. For that price, I would likely look at a Lucid instead. Or save myself 50k and get the Ionic 5. Or better yet, forget the EV option entirely and buy an Aston-Martin DBX. I'd rather impress myself than the neighbors.

Maybe but its also a lot faster and in does not entail much of a range sacrifice, 10 miles according to the EPA. Thus its kind of a guilt free epicurian lunch. The hyperscreen is not available in the RWD. Finally a lot of optional equipment on the 450 is standard on the 580. The 450 is a fine car but the 580 offers quite a bit more for not that big a price differential if comparably equipped. In the EU the hyperscreen by itself is a 7k additional option.

Tesla = ugly black wheels and an airplane yoke... WTF???. Mercedes has
just filled the gap with the EQS. I'm a former Tesla owner now. I traded
it for a 450+. 418 mile range at 100% charge and plenty fast too. Great looking car... The driver lane assist distronic extended restart in stop and go traffic (auto pilot) is better than Tesla in some ways... Very impressed so far. And it even came with a steering wheel! This is a car for grown-ups who want every possible creature comfort, class, quiet cabin, great build quality, long battery range with brick and mortar dealerships in every town... And ALL configurations are the same and/or much less money than a Plaid.... Did I mention the free two years of charging???
