What the young Mayor of Kathmandu, Balen Shah has accomplished and continues to do so during his 1st term is nothing short of outstanding. He proves in less than 3 years that a single young and educated person with the right mindset can change the situation for the better even in a corrupt and dysfunctional country like Nepal. I remember in 1990 when I was studying at ASCOL, and the Communist and Congress parties came to power, making speeches around the country about changing Nepal from a "Jhingapur" (city full of flies) to a "Singapur" within 15 years. After 35 years, it finally took one young and educated independent politician, Balen Shah to accomplish in three years what the dysfunctional and corrupt Communist and Congress parties have been boasting about all these years. This young mayor must be given the opportunity and support to continue his outstanding work, and let's hope the citizens of Kathmandu will not fall for the tricks and lies of the political parties and vote Balen to a 2nd term so that he can continue his work to improve Kathmandu city. Even though I no longer live in Nepal, I follow the events there closely, and my personal hope as a former "Pokhreli" is for a similar young and educated independent politician to come out of nowhere in Pokhara to become mayor and start what Balen is doing these past three years.
