    I honestly think the Chosokabe are underrated. The farm advantage, great defensive position, close to flethcers and blacksmith, easy to have at least 1 trade port, advance accuracy. I know they aren't S tier, but I think they are A tier. Just my opinion tho

    • @kolpere1625
      @kolpere1625 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Personally for me, Chosokabe are better than shimazu. Why?
      First of all,had to say i like turtling strategies and only expanding at early/mid until waiting for my favourite units/being a powerhouse and affording 3/4 elite armies. Now my reasons:
      -Better colours/aesthetic.
      -Best arrows of the game (poorer upgraded ashi-arrows than oda, best sam-arrows of the entire game, best dlc bow unit too).
      -Easy access to stone to make T4 fortress.
      -Early expansion because sam bow doomstack is cheaper and earlier to recruit. That mean more turns to make money and grow your provinces.
      -Related to what i said before, since no one of kyushu is considered my enemy at early, i can choose where to invade (i like to invade that very fertile land of the northwest , very well isolated and protected, a perfect spot for nanban port and leaving all the trade routes there).
      -Same pros than shimazu (trade points, early christianism, etc).
      -Close to Osaka to quickly conquer its school.
      The only cons i can think compared to shimazu is that your investment will be at kyushu, and not your other island. Is not really that bad compared to losing a single land of kyushu, but at least you have to protect the stone province, is the only territory worth to protect (meaning an army placed there forever).

    • @gaven5479
      @gaven5479 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I would argue the Chosokabe are S-tier. You can use the daikyu samurai in lieu of bow warrior monks and their bow ashigaru are very good at defending castles for cheap. This means you can convert to Christianity and dominate the sea trade routes using nanban trade ships. The Otomo are the only clan I would expect to easily crumple the Chosokabe in battle

      @@spamquisition4046 how do you expand to mainland Japan and survive realm divide as the otomo?

    • @spamquisition4046
      @spamquisition4046 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@Loremaster68 Easy! Just send missionaries and throw the entirety of mainland japan to a rebel filled realm. Even if the Clans survive the rebellions, hopefully there'll be enough rebels to form a buffer between your territories and theirs. I usually secure Kyushu and Shikoku first before expanding to the main island however. Your navy, with their Nanban Trade Ships, should be more than enough to protect the islands from the other clans. Likewise, your army should consist of Yari Ashigaru and Matchlock Ashigaru (Replace with Portuguese Tercos once you're able) along with whatever else you can get and simply fight from the west to the east.
      Missionaries are absolutely critical for an Otomo campaign, they'll help you secure provinces by converting the population and debilitate your foes by causing unrest and rebellion. By the time Realm Divide hits, there should be a biiiig void of grey rebel held areas between the enemy clans and your territory. Hope this helps!

    • @TripleZHacker
      @TripleZHacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +262

      That’s a fair point, but I mean at that point why not as the player start as the Otomo? You get a better roster and a bonus to matchlocks plus good ships. If the Mori converts they deal with religious differences and still have no bonus to land units overall. It’s arguable that there’s strength in numbers when it comes to navies and out producing clans with tons of ships but I’ve just seen most people not consider the Mori as one of the better Shogun 2 clans.

    A real shame about Mori, because Mori Motonari is one of the big chads of the Sengoku period. Over shadowed by the big Three: Oda, Toyotomi, and Tokugawa, he did some baller stuff in the period. Beat the Aki-Takeda clan while out numbered heavily by holding a river crossing, securing the entire Chukoku region, and smacking down the Otome, The Mori under Motonari were a serious threat. @kogerugaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well, the Oda clan did most of the job, with the help of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. When Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by one of his subordinates, Hideyoshi rushed back, destroyed the general, and took Oda's place. Hideyoshi effectively unified Japan first, he even invaded Korea with a huge samurai army (wanted to invade China, but Koreans didn't let him through), bringing countless death, and like.. zero results. Then after he died, Ieyasu was the strongest Daimyo in all of Japan, yet still, there was opposition. The battle of Sekigahara decided that Ieyasu is the ultimate power, and he and his clan made sure that their reign stays for a long time.

  • @nemo0036
    @nemo0036 3 ปีที่แล้ว +257

    You know what? Despite the Tokugawa being the victors historically, their position as a very hard clan ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE.
    They basically had to claw their way up in the early years as hard-fighting country bumpkin Samurai serving the Imagawa. And Ieyasu's shrewdness does lend well to the diplomacy bonuses the clan gets in-game. So their final victory is up to YOU, THE PLAYER.
    Really think though they should've gotten Yari Samurai bonuses in general (lackluster, but it's at least better), as opposed to the unplayably broken ninja unit they got. Y'know, make them similar to the Date Bulletproof Samurai, maybe slightly inferior.
    CA's MISSED OPPORTUNITY: Why the hell can we NOT get Date Masamune as a grandchild!? You mean to tell me I can't play as the One-Eyed Dragon of Oshu!?
    It's quite interesting how the Mogami (the Date Clan's neighbour) are very very underrated historically. True, they lost to the Date, but they played some pretty important roles under Mogami Yoshiaki, "The Fox of Dewa". Most notable was the Battle of Hasedo during the Sekigahara campaign, where outnumbered Date-Mogami forces repelled the Uesugi.

    I cannot recommend enough the Extended Clan Unit Bonuses mod by Blue's Clues. It addresses a lot of the imbalances between the clans, kills ashigaru spam while also buffing many of the seldom-used units like kisho ninja and nodachi samurai. Tokugawa particularly benefit a lot from this mod, due to the big changes ninja get. Mori still bottom-tier unfortunately, but otherwise excellent.

Also they have a great starting position a decently skilled player can effectively lock down the British Isles and Ireland and can still rush the trade nodes and cleanse the Carribbean of pirate scum. They can even invade France for an Early knock out blow disabling what should have been their greatest historical rival. Yeah Britain is a little too op. The proximity to the school building, is the main factor to determine clan strength. In campaign, the strength of any clan comes from its economy, which comes from 5 level 3 metsukes, which comes from magistrate building. The most notable school is suruga held by imagawa. Oda Tokugawa Takeda Hojo, all have easy access, which makes them all very strong clans. On the other hand, Ikko Ikki can not recruit metsuke, which makes them a very weak clan (or a challenging clan to play). Date Uesugi Chosokabe have difficult access to school, which makes their economy very weak in the mid-game. Hattori is near settsu, and along with very fertile soil provinces nearby, more than compensates for the higher upkeep. All the other things you talked about in the video are all very minor, which doesn't effect gameplay very much. Based on the ease of accessing the school building:
    S: Oda Tokugawa Takeda Hojo Otomo
    A: Hattori Shimazu
    B: Mori
    C: Date Uesugi Chosokabe
    Shamefur Dispray: Ikko Ikki

    Some arguments in favour of Chosokabe clan: archers in Shogun TW are DEADLY. The lack of shields in all units make them vulnerable to arrows, and archers are golden in defensive battles, especially in sieges (3 full armies vs one of mine defending... it was a slaughter with almost 0 loses to my army). Another thing is recruiting samurai archers : unless they are fighting well trained katana or cav units, they can actually hold themselves fairly well in melee. In addition, their starting region has wood, which is a useful bargain chip in trading, and also helps their navy units in the beginning when you are trying to rush for the supply routes. Their island is also well positioned, since it allows them to choose what they want to attack : southern main island coast, or the neighboring island to the left, so you can make opportunity attacks as you see fit. Also, since there is no other major clan on the starting island, taking it is easy. Then you can quickly rush left while the other clans are duking it out and just ambush either of them or both, thus taking that island as well rather easily if planned right. Once you secured both you can start going mainland from left to right, so when total war is declared, you will only have 1 front to worry about, since you should be pretty close to the capital by the time war is declared. I would be placing them somewhere between upper B and lower A tbh

    I have to say something about Mori. They still have a better ships because of their upkeep.
    Fire Bomb ship has upkeep 100, but Mori version - 50. I think it's a big difference - you can maintain 2 ships instead of 1. And it really helps in the fight for trade nodes. I would say Mori is the best faction in those fights, excluding christians. Bombers are devastating in the fight against bigger ships. Same discount with siege tower and matchlock ships. For Heavy Ships - 175 upkeep vs 100 upkeep. No other faction has such a large reduction in upkeep costs. Let's add the lower recruitment price to that.
    Yeah, Otomo gets 1 matchlock from the beginning, but only one. To build another one faction has to build drydock. All in all, I still think bomber ships are even more powerful than matchlock ships. And you can get them early, it's about 10 turns to invent required tech.

Even if you survive all this you’ll likely end up with the Date breathing down your neck and push west to find a monstrous Oda empire to fight. Upset the Hatakayama? They’ll be a pain in your rear end for most of the campaign. It’s tough… but when you get settled and start pushing back it’s really satisfying.

    I can understand your opinion that Otomo's position ranks them a solid A tier, but I personally rank them even higher... I've pulled some crazy shit with the Otomo clan, as an example I played mostly as a "Turtle" on Kyushu, just researching technologies, converting the population to "The One True Faith" and building up economic potential to sustain a giant army, began my holy crusade of the Eastern Islands, and long-story short I completed the Domination campaign by 1579. Right on time to switch to Fall of the Samurai and try it all again as the Jozai Clan.
    In Addition, the amount of Matchlock spam can be enormous, Melee centered armies evaporate under an highly experienced 5 - Matchlock defensive line and 5 - Samurai Bowmen behind them. Have 2-3 Melee Calvary units at their flank, Its simple and devastating to enemy Morale and units. And like you said during the video, the Otomo as Christians can field the Portuguese-style Trade ship, armed with cannons. And while they are not the only clan limited to this, they are THE first or one of the first to acquire them, leading to great Early-Game advantages in conquering lone islands, or planning Naval Invasions Abroad.
    In any case, Great Video @TripleZHacker I really enjoyed it, keep doing what you do best!

    • @TripleZHacker
      @TripleZHacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks and honestly yeah in the hands of the player the Otomo can be so deadly, I put them as A simply because you have to turtle and convert which takes some time whereas the Oda and Shimazu (if you don’t turn Christian) don’t have to convert (aside from the Shimazu converting the Christians back to Shinto), but in terms of unit roster there’s no question that the Otomo have the luxury of some of the most powerful units in the game. Only issue is that the position in the early game is a bit tenuous and requires some precise execution on the higher difficulties, but yeah once you got Kyushu the rest of Japan will bow down to your economic might.

      I'm using only one bow ashigaru and it's my starting bow ashigaru. Main part of my stack is 4 tercus and 4 naginata samurais. Just put tercus infront of naginatas (they must be very close, like 4-5 meters or even less) and enable volley fire. When enemy will start charging at tercus let tercus do 2-3 volleys and after they must fall back behind naginatas. After that you wait when enemy infantry attacks your naginatas and outflank them with tercus, so tercus will start shoot in their flanks, what will kill enemy morale almost instantly. It usually works very good when enemy has got low numbers of calvary. But when there's a lot of calvary All your plans can be ruined by them. I even have 2 yari samurais (also 2 yari ashigarus, but they are for defend my european cannons) for cover my flanks but sometimes it's not enough. You can have even 6 tercus and 6 naginatas but you will pay for that with 3 another squads (in my army that will be all my calvary and these bowmen). You can have 5 tercus and 5 naginatas but that will result into some problems with organisation, like one group will be larger than other one (if you'll divide your army in 2 groups) or each one flank group will be larger that central one (if you'll divide in 3 groups) what is inconvinient.

I'd regularly use their kisho training to place them where I knew a defender would deploy and wreak havoc. Then let the bulk of my army mop up. • @rohankirkpatrick5078
    @rohankirkpatrick5078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I thought Date (at least on Very Hard- Short Campaign) was the most difficult experience in Shogun 2. Basically the entire strarting 5 to 10 turns have to be played perfectly or your hemmed in by 'allies' and have to incur heavy diplomatic penalties later to break out. You're quite vulernable to navy and if you don't invest enough you will be blockaded to death before you can build your eco. You will still be blockaded no matter what, it's just a question of whether you can earnenough to prevent the inevitable march of enemy stacks into your home 4 (if you even got that far)./
    Expansion isn't any easier as it immediately splits into two widely separated lanes at Fukushima, and then into the opern areas between Shimtosuke and Kai. It's very difficult to hold when dealing with a Hojo-Takeda bloc in the centre, Uesegi on the north coast and usually Oda pushing from the South, along the Edo axis (usually, bot not always at Hojo-Takedas expense). Trying to hold this plains area, whilst plugging the three lanes through the mountains; building your eco, and maintaining army strength for a push *in time* to reach the campaign objectives is really difficult.
    I foudn campaigns in the centre of Japan comparatively easy, as once I was able to bring armies to bear on my enemies economy in the early game, I snowballed quickly. Compare this to the distance between cities in the North - average distance is 2+ turns; you can capture multiple cities per turn in central Japan.
    Shimazu another one of my favourites, don't suffer from this as much, because despite being in an analogous position, Shimazu's experience is very different due to province density - not to mention the relative wealth of those provinces. Both still have to hoof it to Kyoto in a short campaign though, it's just much easier to get started as Shimazu, imo.
    Anyways I digress; I think one key takeaway here is that campaign difficulty changes dramatically when choosing Long or Short Campaign, and you'd probably need a tier list for both.

    Now, I don't wanna suggest Mori should be higher on the list, but... the results don't lie. Maybe it's that goldmine you can conquer instantly.
    Or maybe Shimazu should be lower, since a new player is gonna have harder time dealing with Christian rebellions, and that's the main challenge with Shimazu.

However, Shimazu starts with a blacksmith and on the island of Kyushu if they can conquer it fully they will become an economic powerhouse. Yeah the gold nearby and the blacksmith makes it a valuable area too, just not as fertile soil locations. Overall Shimazu does have two unique units and don’t have to worry about multiple fronts during the mid-game. • @jodofe4879
    @jodofe4879 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Mori definitely should not be at the bottom. The Mori start close to the trade nodes and with their better ships they have an easy time outcompeting rivals there. Their economic game is really strong as a result. Sure, the Otomo have early access to the Nanban trade ship which can overpower most Mori ships (they are vulnerable to fire bomb kobaya spam though), but since the Nanban trade ship is tied to religion rather than clan, the Mori can get a better version of that ship anyways if they convert (which you should, since Christianity is OP). The Mori clan bonus is definitely not nullified by the existence of the Nanban trade ship, since all of your ships (including the Nanban trade ship, which gets increased morale because of your clan bonus) are still better than those of other clans, which makes establishing naval dominance much easier. They are at least C tier, probably even B because it is so easy to steamroll with their economy.
    Date shouldn't be in B tier because of their crappy economy (extremely far away from most trade nodes) and bad starting position. They are kinda isolated so they can't develop as fast as the more southern clans and their distance to the trade nodes at the southern end of the map further hamstrings their economic potential for most of the game. They are fun to play once you get past the really slow early game, but they are definitely not one of the strongest clans if you compare them to other B tiers like the Chosokabe or Hojo. For these reasons, Date should be C tier in my opinion.
    Apart from these, I really liked your tier list! I thought it was pretty accurate.

    • @TripleZHacker
      @TripleZHacker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair points and a solid argument on your part, thanks for the comment and your thoughts! I’d say that sure Mori are probably bottom c tier, their starting position isn’t terrible, by the clans on Kyushu are closer to the trade nodes. Mori can get a blacksmith and gold speciality provinces early on though so it’s not too bad. The Date though so get Iwate and Ugo, both have fertile and very fertile soil so it’s not the worst economic start, but yeah they develop slow in the early game. Mori converting to Christianity is nice, but it can’t happen until they take Kyushu, which I mean any player probably would for obviously economic reasons. I still think the Date’s units getting complete charge bonus across the board is very strong though. Thanks for your input regardless, I appreciate it!

    Hattori can get leveled up ninjas and metsukes really early on and with minimal expanding. After that they are safe to bully everyone in central Japan. Money definitely will be a problem really early on, but their economy skyrockets right after getting smuggling network and metsukes. And ninja superiority can easily be used to mess up with everything Oda and Ikko-Ikko will throw at you. Also every Hattori general have night attack trait - great thing to have both in early and late game, especially on legendary. Not to mention the taking Kyoto from turn 1/2 thing.
    Hattori are indeed a very difficult clan to start with, but they also can be extremely powerful if used carefully.

      Yes all solid points for sure, again in the hands of a player any clan can be great but imagine a multiplayer campaign where there’s all the clans played by someone, I think the Hattori could do fine but once the oda and ikko advance it will be difficult, but yeah good points for sure.

    • @bedasovsem8653
      @bedasovsem8653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think Hattori's worst enemy in early game are actually... Hatakeyama. By the time you start encoutering large forces of Ikko-Ikki and Oda you should already have something to relly on (plus sometimes Oda gets really messed up by Imagawa, Takeda or even Tokugawa lmao). But Hatakeyama is the enemy you need to crush with maximal speed and minimal losses, while have very limited resources. Otherwise Hatakeyama will slow down your first stages of expansion and make vulnerable.

    Lol, Mori. I was playing Shimazu and found the Black Ship with like 22 men and 2 guns, critically damaged out in the middle of no where once. I rolled up with my half assed, fresh squad of w/e the hell garbage barges I built to take my army to Chosokabe island and took it over. I commenced to rule the waves with that one ship alone. It was deploy broadside, press enter, sit back and wait. 1 or 2 hits and enemy ships would give up. I later suffered through the religion change in Shimazu land and build some of those European warships and really dominated the sea. Its actually unreal how broke OP those european ships are.

    Oddly enough, the Mori are the only can I have so far, taken every single province with.
    It’s a good idea for the mori to capture the black ship as soon as possible, you will rarely lose a sea battle afterwards.
    Wako raiders are actually a pretty good early to mid game unit.

    I'd say the Oda are the best clan if you don't play on legendary. The extra starting troops, recruitment slots and reduced upkeep your enemies get on legendary make it a very difficult start. Once you're through that it's a steamroller. Clans that don't have many enemies, have a descent starting eco and don't have to walk to far between provinces are best when playing legendary imo (Shimazu, Hojo, Chosakbe).

    Playing a Co-op Campaign with a friend rn, I play Hattori, he plays Tokugawa and honestly, it's super fun. What I love most is that it kinda is historically inspired and it just feels awesome gaining that kind of control. You actually feel supreme.
    Yes the Hattori are Expensive but honestly once you get your Economy going you just don't care. Night Battles are your best friend though.
    Tokugawa can milk fractions off their Koku with their diplomacy boost with ease and keep allies for longer which is important so in that time you get the trades up and make money that way, you can lower taxes to minimal and have a town growth that sustains the endgame.
    We are one step away from realm divide, have the Hatakeyama, Tsutsui, Otomo, Chosokabe and Uesugi left, trade with everyone, I gain 10k through trade, 6k through taxes (2k from Omi alone, all Provinces on minimal taxes) and have an Army and Navy Upkeep of about 12k rn. So 28k income total.
    Cost becomes obsolete at this point.
    Of course this is in Coop though.
    Would definitely say Hattori and Tokugawa are still my favourite Clans, even for single player campaign.

    I only have the base game and I’ve finished it with all the clans on very hard and legendary. My favourite clan is the Mori. Hear me out. It does everything the other clans want to do but better because money.
    Your early ship infrastructure means you can spam ships early to secure nodes. Your superior ships mean that you can autoresolve even 1v1 fights and take other ships for free. So wako pirates are your best friend because they keep giving you free trade ships.
    From there you build a trade empire that the even the British would envy. You expand out to take most of the coastal cities and defend you territories with op yari ashigaru and maybe some bows. Trade with everyone, focus on building your infrastructure and dominate the seas. Around 30 turns in you are making 30000 koku a turn and you can pivot into whatever strategy you want. You start as the Mori but end up roleplaying as something else. My personal favourite ones are the British Empire (Guns, cannon, Cav and Jesus), the Tudors (mostly bow units and Jesus) Mongol hordes (all cav), and Imperium of Man (all matchlock and Jesus). Your costal cities are staging areas because your ships can transport your armies on the super highway of the sea that you own. You navy could probably beat all of the other navies on the map combined in a single battle. Honestly it feels like you can drop an army anywhere on the map.
    The game gets to a point where even 90% casualty rates in battle would sound like victory. Your motto can become strength in numbers or accuracy through volume or screw the other clans, I have money!The economic backbone of the Mori clan beats all really. I don’t think other clans can expand economically as fast as the Mori.
    Edit: also because you’re swimming in koku you can spam agent abilities for fun. They don’t really matter because your armies and navies steamroll everything due to sheer numbers. Think of Oda but better.
    Edit2: it takes time to pivot into a defined strategy after you create your trade empire. In the meantime while you’re building up infrastructure you might find yourself using pike and shot or medieval Tudor strategies.
    Edit 3: defending trade is easy. Most ships have to travel through narrow chokepoints between the islands. Put a few ships at the entrance and here and there then bobs your uncle. Oda is strong early game but can’t convert their battle advantage into economic growth as fast as Mori which is late game oriented. For every army there will be 2 Oda armies. For every Oda army there will be 2 Mori armies.

      @butter5842 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I just finished my challenge run as the Mori. While doing it the Takeda asked for peace at the cost of 72000 Koku. I was like that’s a scam so I sent missionaries to their territory and caused mass Christian revolt. In a few turns their 15 provinces were in flames and I didn’t send in a single army.

    Love playing as the Oda but during my playthrough as them things were going great until I stumbled upon a Hojo Takeda and Hattori coalition that just had a crud ton of bow samurai doomstacks. They halted my expansion and trapped the heir to my dynasty in Izu where he made a last stand with his army and almost won against two doomstacks. That battle significantly damaged the Takeda enough to render them incapable of stopping my ashigaru armies
