One tip for plastic kits, use Tamiya extra thin plastic glue instead of the tube testors stuff. It's much more effective and wicks into joints due to its low surface tension. PVA glue like Microscale Micro Krystal Klear is an ideal choice for clear parts as you won't have any fogging or warping, and is what I always use for things like aircraft canopies.
I absolutely love the thin cement from Ammo!!! I just am trying to use up my last tube of Testors glue. Thanks for watching Evan, I really appreciate it!!!
Thank you Jason, that's a great tip technique to avoid stringy glue streaks on windows. I've built plastic model kits before and holy moly do I get glue everywhere, sometimes I've left the work station to find part of the model stuck on my arm, so much so I tend to stay well clear of plastic kits. 😂👍
Jason, yet another great video, with lots of techniques. That plastic film on the plastic sheet, is a real trap. I've fallen for that before. Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
The building reminds me of the structures used in the War of the Worlds movie-the 1950s epic! The detail applied to the building really makes it look real.
Hi ya Jason. Just like painting a real building, it’s all about the prep work. You did a wonderful job on the brick work. And the eventual wash work on the gray areas really made the difference. Although, like you said, it’s an easy kit. But it’s all the detail work and painting that takes the time. The “ glass “ certainly had a lot of issues. The lack of helpful instructions is kind of frustrating. But like a lot of comments, Walthers kits have many issues. Thanks for all the great tips and techniques. It certainly looks great on the layout. See ya next time.
Hey Norman, thank you so much for the compliment!!! I always appreciate it! The kit is still a great value for 40 dollars. I have a few more plastic kits that I’ll be building. Stay tuned…
Jason, you did an amazing job making this simple plastic kit look terrific. However, I have one bone to pick before you finish off the roof. A building of this size would certainly have a couple of elevators. What you really need to complete this model is an elevator equipment building on the roof. I'm sort of surprised that Walthers didn't include this detail, to be honest. ITLA has a new kit out that would be perfect for this. And I think some fire escapes would certainly make this build even more amazing. Thanks for this new video!
Thank you so much!!! I plan on laser cutting a fire escape and 3D printing details for the roof. Looking forward to doing it all myself. Stay tuned for that video. 👍
Just bought two kits from Walthers and they are heavy !!! I can’t wait til Santa allows me to open them up and then comes ‘the build’. Very nice work Jason! Fan on budget model railroading as well !!!
I learn so much watching your channel. I am just starting my 1st layout and was considering this building for the background. Thank you for the techniques to painting it
Interesting viewing, thanks for letting us see your techniques. I often use a different technique on bricks, starting with a grey / taupe base, then drybrushing heavily with burnt umber, burnt sienna and red oxide to give the bricks colour but leave the mortar courses untouched. Next time I do something with bricks, I’ll give the late stage mortar wash a try instead.
This kit came out really nice! I love how you used lots of different colors on the bricks to give them a realistic look, and the additional weathering definitely enhanced the realism of the structure. I especially appreciate how you showed all of the products that you used along with your application techniques. I just subscribed to your channel, looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Another fantastic video, Jason! Can't wait to see the additional details you put on. I just built a Walthers interlocking tower, and installed the glass before I realized it had film. Live and learn!
Thank you so much Ed!!! I always appreciate hearing from you. I hope my video helps others to avoid making that mistake with the film. The hobbies fun even when your making mistakes! Thanks for watching and happy modeling Ed!!! 👍
I think it’s a great value for 40 dollars and like you mentioned I’ll be adding lots of details. I have a few more plastic kits to build so stay tuned. Thanks for watching Davie, I really appreciate it! 👍
@@JasonJensenTrains Your technique worked out well on a small Danish rural depot as well: th-cam.com/video/XtKbyFq7PUA/w-d-xo.html But I did add an additional layer of drybrush to the bricks at the end to tone down the colors. Thanks again for the inspiration!
On my layout I cut out the ground floor center gray section to allow a city street to “pass through” the building and filled in against the wall with some N scale street scenes for a forced perspective. Nice work on your building
Excellent video as always, now I'm waiting for part two. I shared this on my Facebook page as it really shows some excellent techniques. The other detail you might consider is a roof mounted water tower. Most older buildings had them for water storage for the building before modern pumps were available. They would fill the tank and gravity feed the water to lower floors, it helped keep water pressure even as the older water systems couldn't maintain pressure to the upper floors. There's a few good articles online of the history of roof mounted water tanks.
Inspirational as always Jason. I have been a viewer of your channel since the beginning and don’t recall any provision for interior lighting in your structures. Your wharf and city buildings with internal and external lighting would be magic in night mode. Your creative postings have no equal and have made possible this level of detail accessible to all modelers, beginners included. Best wishes for your continued success. BTW like the new music.
Thank you so much Rafe!!! I truly appreciate your continued support! I keep the lighting in my layout room very bright to show off all of the details. I don’t do any lighting on the structures themselves because I don’t want to dime the room lights to see lights on or in the buildings. I spend hours, weeks and months detailing my models and I want to see it and I want people viewing my layout to see it. I have no interest in looking at little lights. Just my opinion. I know plenty of modelers that love lighting structures . Thanks for watching!!!
Great video Jason, I love Walthers kits, but they are a little thin with there instructions lol, you’ve been spoilt with the instructions the FOS Scale do lol - loved the paintwork you did on this build simply brilliant, thank you can’t wait for your next project 👍
The build was cool, I agree you need elevator sheds for the roof. I do have a question why use a rattle can of dull coat? Testors makes a bottle of dull coat , yes you have to add 50/50 with their lacquer thinner to use an air brush but the results are better. Stair stepping your scenery always adds depth, also shows off the details of the building at each step up. Great job! my layout is calling, till next time.
Thank you so much Will, I always appreciate it!!! Lol, I’m such a creature of habit. I’ve used Testors dull coat for years. Thanks for watching buddy! 👍
Nice job, Jason. You know, I was looking at that model and something was bothering me about it, and then I realised what it was. Instead of that plain, flat roof, a building of that size would have an elevator, and there is no housing on the roof for the elevator motor and machinery. A model maker of your calibre should have no problem making something that suits 🙂
Nice building, Jason. Even though it's very plain, you make it look good with your shading. I do hope they don't charge much, given the condition they keep it in. Ha ha
Nice build. I guess as a half-relief background building, Walthers don't put too much detail on the roof, and no back wall, to keep the costs down. I've not checked their website, but I wonder if they make a version with a back wall too for foreground models, although you could also put two of those kits back to back and end up with a really impressive building if you have the space: that would cry out for a fully detailed lobby interior. - imagine being able to look through the big ground floor windows and see the elevators and such like! Although I'm a European and UK modeller, I do like some of the Walthers kits, as they have a real size and presence that kits from European firms like often Faller don't have.
Again great video and result! Two questions: 1 The speckel you use, what is it actual intent for? Plastering walls? 2 Why don't you use the ammo extra thin cement anymore for assembling the walls, windows and glazing?
Thank you so much!!! The spackel is for plastering walls. I just decided to use Testors glue on the kit because it takes A LOT of glue and I’m wanting to use up that tube. Thanks for watching!!!
By speckling, were you talking about the spackle? Or the technique he used to paint using the sponges? If you're talking about the painting technique with the sponges, that was to give it a feel of different colored bricks. And the spackle was used to represent the mortar between the bricks.
I also built this kit and I braced the half way up for stability. saw your edges also had some spaces on the corner edges, Any suggestion on how to fill
Question for you. I have used that same chalk paint but when I do a wash it seems to dissolve the chalk paint. I wait a day to let the chalk dry but still have the same issue. What am I doing wrong? I really try to use very little water and wash.
For your windows, since you have so many and a Large area to cover. If you know a teacher or someone who works with lamination. See if you have some of their scraps. My wife retired from teaching some 5 years ago, and I still have sheets of the stuff.

Missing parts , lack of instructions, etc. is why I don’t buy any Walther’s Cornerstone kits! They are good at replacing the parts but when need them you have to wait to get them, especially when you live out of country. The shipping and duty doesn’t isn’t worth the wait or money.
