Struggling for attention in his native America both as a solo singer and in groups, including a partnership with Art Garfunkel then called Tom & Jerry, Paul Simon moved to England and travelled the country as a jobbing folk singer before he got his break. Many of his songs were written or started there, which is evident from some of the early hits of Simon & Garfunkel. Homeward Bound, for example, was written while he was returning from a gig in the north of England to the love of his life in the south, Kathy, about whom he also wrote several songs. Another song, America, speaks of his and Kathy's imaginary ride on a Greyhound bus. As Simon became more famous, Kathy, who he met while she was selling tickets to one of his gigs, became more discomfited and the couple split up. She remained in the UK, where she resides to this day (actually in Wales) while he returned to America to embark upon the stellar career he has enjoyed.
A few years ago, a British tabloid traced Kathy, who still shuns attention but revealed that she, her husband of several years and Paul Simon are on good terms.

Great song. Paul Simon has written dozens of classics, this is my favorite of his solo career. Very thought-provoking lyrics.

Paul Simon took the main part of the melody from "St. Matthew Passion" by J.S. Bach, who in turn lifted it from "Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret" by Hans Leo Hassler.
To me, this song is about alienation. The lyric about him being "so far away from home" is metaphorical. It's not that he's physically not at home, it's that he doesn't recognize his own country as home any more. One of the most telling lines in the song is, "I wonder what went wrong."

I haven't listened to your video yet but for the second time you're explaining about being from India and how you might not understand American culture. I think you do. I love Indian Culture. I love you guys, are you getting picked on by people? I'll beat them up for you. OK violence is dead but I can say mean things about them in my head.
My point is you guys rock. I love you, you're doing great. Everyone give them and I LOVE YOU.

Yeah I hear it as from an American "what went wrong?". . .we started off great but what went wrong? I didn't hear anything about 'outsiders'.

    1. Sirte has a beautiful smile. Not exactly my analysis, but very thoughtful and broadens my perspective. I do think it's more of a humanism song in American context than an American song. Well done!

He was talking about soldiers fighting in Vietnam and how horrible that war was. The Statue of Liberty is floating off to sea because America was doing the wrong thing. it is a sad song.

Please look up the cover of this by Josh Turner Guitar. He incorporates the Bach Chorale that it is based on into his cover and it is really beautiful!

Bach actually borrowed this theme from Gerhardt, who in turn borrowed it from Hassler in a slightly modified version 😉

Just giving a wave from Colorado, making sure you are both doing OK. I've loved this song since as long as I can remember.
Savio, you'll have to pardon me when I say that Kirti is smoking hot. You're a lucky man. All the best to both of you and your families.
