Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Spraying Water? Quick DIY FIX | Easy Troubleshooting Trick Before Replacing

- Is your dishwasher not spraying water when it should? Don't be in a hurry to throw it out and replace it before trying this fix. Before doing anything, be sure to shut off the water supply and the power.
If your Whirlpool dishwasher is failing to spray water, don’t rush to replace it just yet! This comprehensive guide provides a step-by-step DIY fix to resolve the issue swiftly and economically.
If your Whirlpool dishwasher is no longer spraying water, it could be due to several reasons: clogged spray arms, blocked filters, or a malfunctioning pump. Before investing in a new appliance, try this simple troubleshooting method.
*Step 1: Safety First*
Always start by ensuring safety. Turn off the dishwasher and disconnect it from the power source to avoid any electrical mishaps during the troubleshooting process.
*Step 2: Check for Clogs*
Inspect the spray arms for any blockages. Sometimes, food particles, debris, or mineral deposits can obstruct the spray arm nozzles. Gently clean these using a soft brush, toothpick, or a small wire to remove any buildup that might be preventing water flow.
*Step 3: Examine the Filters*
Filters are crucial for catching food particles and debris. They might become clogged over time, obstructing water flow. Locate the filters in your Whirlpool dishwasher, usually at the bottom, and remove them. Rinse them thoroughly under running water to dislodge any accumulated residue.
*Step 4: Test the Water Supply*
Check the water supply to the dishwasher. Ensure the water inlet valve is fully open and the supply line isn’t kinked or clogged. A restricted water supply could be the culprit behind the lack of water spray.
*Step 5: Assess the Pump*
The dishwasher pump is responsible for circulating water during the wash cycle. If it’s malfunctioning, it can hinder water flow. Inspect the pump for any visible damage or obstructions. If necessary, consult the dishwasher manual for guidance on accessing and examining the pump.
*Step 6: Run a Test Cycle*
After performing these troubleshooting steps, reassemble the dishwasher parts and run a test cycle to check if the water is spraying properly. If the issue persists, consider seeking professional assistance or contacting Whirlpool customer service for further guidance.
*Why DIY Troubleshooting?*
DIY troubleshooting offers several benefits. It can save you time and money by avoiding unnecessary replacement costs. Additionally, it empowers you with a better understanding of your appliance, making future maintenance easier.
*Before Replacing Your Dishwasher*
Replacing a dishwasher is a significant investment. By attempting these DIY troubleshooting steps first, you might save yourself the expense of a new appliance. However, if these steps don’t resolve the issue and your dishwasher is still under warranty, contact Whirlpool’s customer service for guidance or consider professional repair services.
*Final Thoughts*
A Whirlpool dishwasher not spraying water can be frustrating, but before considering a replacement, try these simple DIY troubleshooting steps. Remember to prioritize safety, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help if needed.

This fixed my problem! Thank you for posting this. Saved me $80.
Great to hear that! It’s nice when you can fix them yourself.

This is a SUPER helpful video. HOWEVER, after I reassembled and everything was seated correctly the pump had started to leak!! Took me taking it apart a few times to finally figure out the issue.
I had dried the gasket and housing off completely to make sure all debris was clear which it was.
Then I remembered I had some waterproof gasket grease from a shower mixing valve repair.
I coated the gasket with a thin layer of waterproof gasket grease (Danco Waterproof Grease 80360) and putting it back together just felt way better. Tried it out and NO MORE LEAK!
I have a feeling the dry rubber against the plastic was not allowing it to seat correctly in the housing and this fixed that.
So for anyone having this issue, go pick up this grease, it’s only a couple dollars and saved me from just buying a new pump or gasket!
Thanks again for the video it was indeed helpful!
Glad this helped and thanks for adding the tip to your comment as well. 👍
Great great comment here. Thanks for the tips for the audience=)
Was thinking the same thing. Lubricate the oring shown and the rubber gasket inside the brass connection where the water line was unplugged.
Just went through this last night and thankfully I was smart enough (usually not) to leave the dishwasher out before a test run. Sure enough there’s a leak now.
Gonna grab some of this grease tonight and try again. Thanks for the tip.
Why didn't I listennnnnn, off to ace tomorrow lol
My Whirlpool dishwasher stopped working 3 days ago, and having 2 kids, we are tired of hand-wash cups, glasses, dishes, trays the whole day, definitely the dishwasher and roomba are our best allies in our effort to maintain our home clean and organized. Well, we were looking for a good memorial day offer in Home Depot and Bestbuy, and when we were ready to buy a new one, this video appears and saves us $650. Thanks a lot!!!
Thanks for the great report! Very glad this helped you out:)
5mins and it worked! Crazy how some small debris will jack up the inner workings. Thanks again for the tip
Heck yea. Glad it helped.
I was about to buy a new dish washer and thank god i watched your video before i place the order, i did exactly what you did and i didnt find anything blocking but it was minor dirt and i washed it well and put it back together and test it out and wow it worked . You are the man thank you so much
Glad I could help! Thanks for letting me know too=)
Was there a hot plastic smell?
OMG! It worked! Thank you so much for posting this fix. I didn't find anything substantial in the pump- a small seed or pebble (or something) but I cleaned everything and reassembled and it's working like a champ! THANK YOU!
You are very welcome. I’m very happy to hear this fixed your problem. Thanks for letting me know:)
Thank you so much for this! It’s fixed my issue right away. I wouldn’t have know where to start but your detailed video made it easy, plus it was the exact same model as mine which made it even easier! You’re the best!
Thanks for the kind words! I’m so happy this helped you.
Thanks so much for this! I was thinking I needed a new pump or even a new dishwasher. All it took was a half hour and I was back up and running!! Fantastic!
Great to hear that!! Dishwashers are expensive so it’s nice when you can fix them yourself, DIy style. Take care!!
Thank you so much for the video. We were able to follow the instructions to remove the pump which had gunk that blocked the pump to not work properly. We cleaned it all out, did a test 1 hour wash, and heard the water spraying. Dishes are now cleaned. You saved us $600.
That makes me very happy to hear! Glad it worked out:)
Wanted to give a shout-out this 100% fixed my issue. Strange though it wasn’t the same intense debris you had and it still malfunctioned. All the same worked out great! Thank you!
Glad this helped:)
Our dishwasher had the exact same problem, and after following your video it's back in business. Thank you for sharing!
That’s awesome to hear. Thanks for letting me know!
This worked perfectly. Lots of plastic in that blade. Getting that o-ring was a challenge, which lead to a leak instantly. Once o-ring sat correctly, leaking fixed.
Was so close to taking a sledge hammer to our dishwasher. Followed your video and what do you know found a huge hair ball clogging the exact spot you said. Cleaned it real well and it’s back up and running. My family and I appreciate you and your willingness to share your video. Thank you again 🙌🏾💪🏾
I know how frustrating it can be:) So glad this helped you guys out. Thanks for letting me know. Take care.
Me, too! I was beyond frustrated with the dumb dishwasher and so ready to swing the sledgehammer, but this process in this video absolutely did the trick. The dishwasher works like a charm now and we’re SO grateful to you for sharing your expertise and such clear instructions!
@@rachelsauer9768 I'm very happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know. Take care!
Thanks for this man, it really helped us out! Ours had some debri, but nothing like yours. Cleaning it out seems to have done the trick and everything is working again! Clean and concise videos like this are a big help to people.
Thanks a bunch for the nice words. Really appreciate it and glad this helped you.
Your video helped my husband fix our dishwasher in 15 minutes! You saved us hundreds of dollars! Thank you!
Awesome!!! Great to hear that. Glad this helped you guys.
Amazing troubleshooting skills! Impressed by how methodically you tackled the dishwasher issue, taking it apart and fixing the pump. Your expertise shines through!
It’s always nice when you get lucky enough to find the root cause of an appliance problem without having to go spend the money on a brand new one. Thanks for the nice words. Appreciate it.
Just a fyi if you can't pull the dishwasher out from under the counter, I had to raise the leveling feet all the way up (they just turn left or right to raise or lower the unit) so the dishwasher was sitting on the ground and then picked up a little to get it over the flooring, then it slid right out and this worked!! Thank you!!!
This is my exact dishwasher and exact problem. I’m excited to have found such an easy to follow video. Hopefully I have the same success as your repair
So happy this helped. Thanks for letting me know. Take care and good luck!
100% my issue. Followed along step by step and while I did not have the amount of debis you had, this fix resolved it. Now cancelling my service call! Thanks for saving me big $
I love it when this happens. Thanks for letting me know!
Wow! Not all heroes wear capes, truly. Thank you for the fix!
You are welcome and thanks for the nice compliment. Take care.
Found some scale in there from the well water. Cleaned it up good as new. Thanks for the awesome video
Nice work! Glad this helped.
Absolute legend! Mine didn’t have anything blocking but removing and cleaning did the trick!
:) thanks for the nice comment. Glad it helped. Thanks for letting me know.
This took me only 15 minutes to do and worked perfectly. Saved me buying a new machine. Thank you very much. This has become my all time favourite youtube video ❤
Great to hear!
I just fixed our D/W exact same issue and it saved me a service call. thanks so much, you're great!!
Oh sweet! Great to hear that. Yeah pretty simple once you get it pulled out and flipped around. Thanks for the nice comment.
This video definitely saved me money. Worked instantly. Can't get enough of DIY 💪🏾
Right on! Thank you
I have the same model and had the same issue, I did what you showed and cleaned out that part (mine just had gunk in it but nothing in the impeller part). Once I put it back on and hooked it back up it worked perfectly! Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing
we’re going to try to fix it step by step with your awesome video tomorrow! Thanks!! Fingers crossed!
Thank you!
My pump worked but the sprayer did not. So I followed your video. Found the impeller area clean and just a little gunk underneath. Cleaned it out anyways but did not have high hopes.
Surprise, surprise... the sprayer works again!!!
Thanks
Hey alright!!!!
Great vid. Thanks for this. My pump had a plastic tab off the bottom of a Yeti mug that had come off in it. The tab said. "DO NOT REMOVE." 😂😂😂
😄Glad this helped.
Thank you for making this. Mine had no visible blockage but the “fix” still worked. I wonder if it has to do with the magnetic drive? I had a dog fountain with a magnetic drive pump. Once in a while it just got “stuck” and failed unless I took out the magnet to “reset” it.
Either way this works. Thanks again.
Hahaha that’s great to hear. I’m surprised at that to tell you the truth. hey whatever gets it back working:)
Same here second time I've had to do it. Wonder if I should replace the part. It's getting quite tedious
That’s a great point and it sounds like that’s entirely possible.
This worked perfectly! Mine had what looked like a hairball stuck inside. Pulled it out and put it back together. Works perfectly now. Thank you for putting this video together. Clean dishes!😊
That’s fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing the positive results. Take care.
Sir! I want to thank you sooo much for this video! I was able to fix the exact issue with mine. Thanks to you, I just earned 1000+ brownie points from the wife 😊 ❤
You're welcome! Glad to support that marital bliss:) I got a few credits for fixing mine too. thanks for letting me know. Take care.
I had the exact same problem as in this video! I followed your steps and it helped me fix the issue. Thanks so much for making this video and helping me out!
No problem. Dishwashers are expensive so it’s always nice when we can figure out how to DIY. Thanks for letting me know. Take care!
SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you so much for saving our family over $700!! I was able to do it all on my own and was successful!
That is awesome news. Thanks for letting me know.
Thank you for the video. It saved me a couple hundred dollars. Watch for the washer. It is tricky.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this video. Fixed the problem in under 20 minutes you sir are a lifesaver
Glad it helped. You are very welcome. Appreciate the feedback.
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Problem solved! My hairball was bigger than yours! What a relief!
Right on!!!! Wow you must have some blockage:) thanks for letting me know.
This worked for me. I didn't really find any debris except a little bit of scale. Cleaned it up, put it back together and it works like new again. Thanks for your video!
Heck yeah! I’m so happy to hear this worked for you. Thanks for letting me know. Take care.
Thanks so much for the thorough walkthrough! This fixed our issue as well. We didn’t reinstall the pump as flush as it needed to be at first, so we got a leak. So make sure there are no gaps. We’re good to go!
Great to hear!
This video encouraged me to work on my dishwasher. I had debris on mine also. I Got it going again. Thank you so much for this video.
Great to hear it. Nice work! Thanks for letting me know:) Take care.
The problem was exactly as you pointed out. Thank you for saving me an expensive service call.
Glad to hear it:) thanks for letting me know👍
Has the exact same problem with mine! Wish I had found this video over a year ago when the problem started. Just hand washed dishes for a year for no reason…although it did teach my kids a little work:)
I guess that’s the silver lining:) thanks for sharing
🙌🙌🙌 watched this video and fixed my dishwasher in 5 minutes!
Thank you!
Fantastic!
This was my issue! Easy to do! Thank you very much!
Great to hear that!! It’s nice when you can fix them yourself.
I found your procedure very valuable. However, I shortened it considerably by not disconnecting any of the three washer connections. I was still able to get to the pump by tilting the washer about 70 degrees.
My 0-ring has an internal diam 1mm greater than its seat. Is this normal or should I get another that is more snug? Another viewer says she cannot find a replacement.
I was able to use the existing gasket. Thanks for the input:)
Great video! It was super informative on how to get the pump out. Unfortunately for me there was no clogs in the dishwasher but on inspection the magnet of the motor was split in half which is why the pump isn’t functioning. Now the fun part of finding the parts but at least I was able to figure out what happened.
Right on! Thanks for sharing
My 2017 Whirlpool dishwasher had the same problem..the circulation pump on mine has a fine screen below the 4 screw impellar housing that barely looked block but I cleaned it with a tooth brush and dish soap the impellar unscrews from the center magnet shaft..works great now..however my pump was very difficult to remove..it rotates off the same direction as this video but has a rubber sound damper post behind so you are required to try tilting it out forward to clear the mount..it was very hard to twist the pump off as it take almost a full quarter turn..great video here..saved me $$$ thanks!
Great comment. Thanks for sharing that as well. Glad this helped. Take care.
Great video, took no time and fixed my dishwasher!
Glad to hear this helped! This seems to be a common problem with dishwashers. Thanks for letting me know and for watching my videos!
Thank, thanks & again. My dishwasher had the identical problem, thanks to your video, I fixed mine the same as yours. I love "TH-cam University".
Glad it helped!thanks for the feedback.
I was able to backflush mine without pulling it out. I removed the filter, screen, and lower spray arm and washed all of them in the sink with hot water. I took a large funnel and a medium pan full of hot water and flushed down the outlet where the lower spray arm attaches. It took 3 tries but I got the junk out to where I could grab it with needle nose pliers. It seems a lot easier than this so I thought I'd post for others.
This fixed my problem!!! Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome!
Gracias!!! 👏🙏🙏 this video saved me at least $250+ dollars and took 30mn to follow. We had an almost identical piece of plastic in the impeller
De nada! Glad this helped. Thanks for letting me know.
Great tutorial! Fixed my dishwasher within 30 minutes😊
Thanks! Glad to hear this helped. Appreciate the feedback.
Nice job, very efficient narration. Thanks.
Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for the video. We fixed this issue in our dishwasher
Glad it helped. Thanks for letting me know:)
Absolute Life Saver! Thank You So Much
I’m happy this video served you well. Gotta keep the dish washer running! Thanks for commenting. Take care.
This was a great video! To the point and educational!
Thank you!
Im going to try this. Wasnt sure how to get it off to see if its plugged. Dishwasher wont spray but fills up and drains. Sure hope i get it going again like you did yours. My Whirlpool is 6 years old.
Hope it solves the issue
@DIYTechnician Couldn't get the pump to unscrew apart. So after putting it all back in cabinet and turned it on to see what happens....it came on and washed and sprayed for a few minutes and just stopped and never did anything again. So mad that I'm giving up and looking for a new better dishwasher.
This was it! Thank you boss, these dish washers are much lighter than i thought, too, lol. Anyways, again thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for letting me know. Glad it helped.
Thank you for this. I have this exact whirlpool and that was a previous issue we dealt with. I keep this video so I always remember. Found a piece of mr noodles seasoning pack in it this time. 😅
Great to hear! Please do:) thanks for the feedback as well. Take care.
With 33,000 views on this video that tells me not to buy whirlpool appliances anymore. My whirlpool refrigerator, and washer have already went out. Now I'm here working on the dishwasher. Hey thanks for making this video though.
Yeah I hear ya. I’ve had the same luck. That being said I havn’t had any notably better results with most of the other models either. I’m happy if I can get 5 years out of any standard appliance these days. Best of luck to you and thanks for chiming in here. Take care.
GREAT VIDEO, unfortunately, we had no clog issues. Anything else come to mind?
Not that I know of unfortunately. Thanks for the nice comment.
Thank you for your video! Saved me from having to wash dishes!!!
Heck yeah! Thanks for letting me know this helped:)
This worked for me. It was easy and it saved me a service call $$$.
Thanks Mike! Appreciate you letting me know. Great to hear it.
Saved me a bunch of money. Mine wasn’t dirty at all, only 2 yrs old, but somehow taking it apart and putting it back together fixed it. Pain in the @ss getting that gasket seated correctly. Thanks!
Great to hear it worked. Yeah that gasket is tricky:) thanks for letting me know!
Thanks bro! You bought me some time until I replace the pump!
Glad I could help
Thank you! Worked for us! Massive chunk of hair in our pump somehow.
Hahaha that’s awesome. Thanks for letting me know. Glad it worked out.
Thanks this worked for me too! Mine didn’t have plastic but did have some gunk in it.
Awesome! I’m happy to hear this did the trick.
Awesome video. Thank you so much for the save.
Glad to help!
Thank you I took mine apart and the pump was clean and spun freely. Don’t think the motor is running. Any ideas.
Did you happen to get the easy stuff out of the way first inside dishwasher? Filters, screens etc? If so, I’m not sure from there.
Thank you and I did all of that. i guess I will have to try and replace the $150 motor or junk a 5 year old washer. Sad state of Whirlpool manufacturing, rubbish now. Cheers
Thank you for solving my problem
You are very welcome. Happy this helped!
So I did two additional steps. I pressed 3 buttons in sequence with 1,2,3 and 1 sec between…it gave me an error code. The round float on the bottom front inside was clogged and not working. I poured vinegar and Dawn and cleaned it good and poured hot water on it and it worked!!!
Awesome!!
The magnet is cracked on ours. Just over year old. Can we purchase a new one or does it matter?
Not sure on that one.
Mine only sprays sometimes, I do get water inside the dishwasher, but not spraying, also when push start button, I hear a clicking sound from under the dishwasher. I tried to bypass the flood switch but nothing changed. Before ordering a new pump, could you advise what else could be the problem?
I can’t say ive had those same symptoms with mine. The clicking makes me a little suspicious that it’s something besides what is shown in the video here. Maybe a sun next matter expert can chime in here on your issue. Good luck to you and thanks for watching my videos.
Same with mine,, I get a vibration every few seconds like a motor is trying to start but nothing. After a few tries, it starts. I checked all areas and nothing is clogged like this video
@@DIYTechnician Thanks. The problem was the circulation pump, replaced it and now works like the first day we got it.
@@beardog420 Sorry to hear that. It seems your problem is same as mine. I could figure out mine, a faulty circulation pump! I bought another one from eBay for $20
Awesome!! Love it when it works out. @@Fgrgplayzz
Thank you so much! This saved us a ton!!
Glad it helped!
I have tried twisting that part forever. My husband has tried as well. We can't get it off. Feels like we're going to break something trying to get it off. Any suggestions?
Any way to use some kind of mechanical means?
My pump seems to have another piece connecting it to the base of the washer which does not allow me to turn it to remove. Any suggestions?
Hmm I wish I had a picture to see what you’re talking about. Without seeing it I’m at a disadvantage on helping.
We actually realized it is a different part and the entire piece has to be removed.
@@jenniferbeaudean3524 ok sounds good. Did it fix the issue?
I cannot get the white piece with the wires out- any suggestions?
Got it! And it worked! Thank you man. Made for a really good day.
Awesome!
Worked for me, thank you!
Great to hear that!
Mine has the exact symptoms.. but pump is super clean (so not clogged). What should be my next move? 😢
Do you have continuity to and from the pump?
Thank you so much for this video!! You saved the day!
Right on!!👍 thanks for letting me know.
We’ve got the same one!! Brand new!!!
Sweet. Knock on wood havn’t had too many issues with it such as this one. Still running great. Good luck to you.
Worked, thank you!
Very happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know.
Nice video. I wish it could help me, but unfortunately, everything looks clean and shiny everywhere, but the water isn't spraying anyway.
Sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing though.
TY !
THANK YOU! This was amazing!
You're so welcome!
Great video, 👍 thank you
Thanks:)😊
Great video easily fixed my dishwasher thanks.
That makes me happy to hear
You saved me. Thank you
No problem! Thanks for letting me know:)
Just a little hair between the rotor and impeller.
You save me $500 bucks
To paraphrase Nathan Hale;
I regret that I only have one like to give.
Awesome:) glad this helped. Thanks for letting me know and appreciate you watching my videos.
Mine makes a vibration every few seconds like a motor is trying to start but nothing and the it seems to start but not cleaning well. No clogs anywhere
Have u cleaned the dishwasher filter already?
Maybe try replacing the water inlet valve?
You’re the man, thanks
Thank you. Take care!
Easy fix thanks to you.
Glad to help:)
helpful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!!!
Heck yes. Thanks for the comment
Mom of 3 littles and I got after it and fixed it! 🎉 But now it’s not drying😂😢 trying to figure it that issue
Glad to hear this helped but not too sure on the drying issue.
Are you using rinse aid?
No just regular dish soap.@@montanamom1124
So I would caution against opening this pump up unless it is a last ditch try and you are (otherwise) ready to buy a new one. I also disassembled my pump per the video, but found nothing. However, because it is an 8+ year old unit, the o-ring seal was deteriorating - grainy blackness when I cleaned it with Q-tips. I cleaned it and put a layer of o-ring grease on it. However, it leaked pretty badly. I repeated it, but to no avail. AND - YOU CANNOT BUY THE O-RING SEAL BY ITSELF!! The only thing sold is the entire pump assembly and that is prohibitively costly! So I am looking at a new dishwasher... 😒
Damn the luck. Lots of success from folks using this, however, your situation seems to be an outlier and seems you also have the same luck I typically have with appliances:( best of luck to you.
how exactly do you not pinch the gasket?
It’s a little tricky and takes some finesse
That's counter-clockwise!
Thanks
The gasket will not seat. So loose entire portions of it poke out of the housing
Bummer. Mine was able to be readily slipped back in there.
