In West Virginia folklore, the Mothman is a humanoid creature reportedly seen in the Point Pleasant area from November 15, 1966, to December 15, 1967. The first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register, dated November 16, 1966, titled "Couples See Man-Sized Bird ... Creature ... Something". The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States. The source of the legend is believed in modernity to have originated from sightings of out-of-migration sandhill cranes or herons.
The Mothman was introduced to a wider audience by Gray Barker in 1970, and was later popularized by John Keel in his 1975 book The Mothman Prophecies, claiming that there were supernatural events related to the sightings, and a connection to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The book was later adapted into a 2002 film, starring Richard Gere.
An annual festival in Point Pleasant is devoted to the Mothman legend

Mothman was always my favorite cryptid. My biggest disappointment in life was discovering that Mothman was more than likely just a misidentified Barred Owl . They're native to the area, are quite large for an owl, they match early descriptions in general of what Mothman looked like (compared to the modern depiction of a man with moth wings. And, guess what? Their eyes glow red when reflecting light. May the legend of Mothman never die!

Clearly, the Barred Owl has evolved to mimic Mothmen to ward off predators - like Milk Snakes mimicking deadly Coral Snakes.

how do you misidentify a owl for a person though? sounds like a rationalization to make people feel less terrified.
and the coincidence is a bit more than ignorable

    • @Jormyyy

@@Biodeamon The same way us humans misidentified manatees and seals and sea lions as "mermaids".
In the dark, two, high set, forward facing eyes, outstretched wings, and upright posture, sure can look a lot like a flying person.
I wanna be a believer too. I was for a long time. But unfortunately the theory/ evidence with the Barred Owl has convinced me otherwise. Hell, some sightings may have been Great Horned Owls. They also live in the area. Their eyes reflect light and glow. The antennae on top of Mothman? Head feathers of said owl.
You can keep believing if you want, I, unfortunately, barely do.

Seeing more cryptids and stories related to them would be cool. An episode on the Chupacabra would be sick, I remember hearing lots of stories of mexican farmers and land owners getting livestock attacked by what they thought was one near where I used to live. Dogs would also get attacked and killed by it too (probably just coyotes as is common in the southwest).

    • @lawrencemckinley4439

The chupacabra is really interesting because as time has gone on the myth has moved north (I think it started in Argentina) it changed a lot. Originally it was like a reptilian blood sucking “humanoid” (sometimes it’s closer to monkey proportions and other times it’s like a kangaroo) but as it went north it became more like a mangy dog.

  • @Bluecho4
    @Bluecho4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

I'm definitely in the "it was an Owl" camp. Moreover, I think those people who encountered the owl, in their fear and surprise, vastly overestimated its size and speed, both in the moment and upon recollection. Memory is a fickle thing, as is our ability to accurately gauge threats under stressful circumstances. Let alone _at night._ The one witness who saw it during the day was probably staring into the sun, which would not only obscure its form, but do eye damage.
It's also worth considering that people tend to be influenced by the culture around them. The Loch Ness Monster, for example, only started to be identified as a pleaseasaur after a notable movie had stop motion dinos in it. If people started reporting Mothman sightings and that became public knowledge, this could lead to people misremembering mundane weird encounters as Mothman ones, or caused a bunch of folks to make up stories for attention.
There's a cascade of factors at work that grew the legend of this cryptid, when really it was a couple chance encounters with owls. Maybe there even was a Sandhill Crane, once or twice. We humans are so tuned to look for patterns, we create them where nothing actually exists.

Yeah, the *at night* bit is especially important. I was finishing up some stuff in the barn after dark one time when my flashlight decided to start dying. The MIB that were mentioned was also discussed with a stranger in town going by the name of Indrid Cold. I think the best thing that solidifies Mothman as a actual possible creature is the fact that it's nocturnal. Sure, some sighting have been in the day but most take place at night. This makes it more believable as opposed to something like Bigfoot who is usually diurnal. It makes sense something like Mothman isn't seen a lot if it only comes out at night, where it's already hard to make out details, and the fact that it can fly.
If I were to assume, I'd say an unknown species of Owl works best for a logical explanation. As Bricky said, the eyes are uncanny of that of an Owl's and though people don't tend to realize it, some Owls can grow to be absolute units. I wish some of the encounters had included something about a possible vocal noise this creature makes because, whilst Owls are often clumped together as something that hoots, Barn Owls in particular scream like freaking demons.
Either way, very interesting discussion and I do hope that you guys can talk about some more cryptic encounters!

I used to go to a week long summer camp every year when I was a kid, and we had two cryptid legends there. The campgrounds were split between two main areas, with a long path through the woods between them
One legend was moth man. During the forest walk there is a shortcut that leads up and over a hill right through the trees instead of going around the hill like the trail does. It’s said that moth man lives on that hill, and if you take the shortcut he’ll know and may attack you
The other legend which was much more popular - and weird - was the polar gator. It was an alligator but covered in polar bear fur. Honestly, there may be more to it that I’ve forgotten since it’s been so long. I kinda hope that there was, since that actually sounds pretty dumb. But regardless, part of that trail was was a little wood bridge over a creek. Apparently if you are completely alone and stand on the bridge and count to 10 (using Mississippi counting), the polar gator will come out to eat you. That thing was a really popular story at the camp

You left out that in the movie they say nobody knows why Silver Bridge collapsed. Except in reality, we do- it wasn't engineered to take 1950- 60's levels of traffic. Also, moth man is a slasher movie villain.

Another thrilling episode of: Tales from the West Virginia Hills....I mean Detective Ridiculous.
That entire area is a hot bed for strange sightings and creatures. You got Flatwoods and Grafton just a short distance away and those have their own monsters and there are sightings of everything from UFO´s to bigfoot and gods damned thunderbirds. Say what you want about Fallout 76, and you can say a lot, but the game nails just how weird that piece of the world is.

Went to Point Pleasant in november of 2022 and it was fucking spooky man. Silent Holler is the vibe, the hotel across from the museum is run by really fucking weird people and im pretty sure its haunted. Fun to visit once, but i ain't ever going back i think 😅
EDIT: the musuem was a fun little attraction and the mothman themed stuff that was open was neat but the overall review is go during the mothman festival and avoid during the off season. The few people working the museum and the sister shop across the street were cool, but just not worth the long trip there in off seasons.

I'm a special messenger of God sent at this time. I have Mothman here with me listening to this podcast. He did not care for the movie with Richard gere, at first. It's hard for non flesh beings to see or reflection of ourselves of what man, especially of today, with what they have to say. We're just getting started.
So he's excited to hear your podcasts. He's actually a cherubim that was stationed here. He now had been sitting at my house on my roof but he wants to assure you all that he did not leave his post. He's a protective angel but not one that humans understand bc they have limited understanding what is good and what is evil.
We're very bipolar on this. He's my brother here as well as In Heaven. He's been waiting all this time, for this current time. He thanks you for getting out the word, not of him, but of God.
He just seems scary bc people assign their own fears bc people tend to live a life of fearful of what they do not understand. Which is understandable, he says. He also will read over your shoulders when people are looking at their cell phones.
You'll know, if you've got a kind of sense of energies, you'll feel him in your chest when he's around and it feels like a pressure but it can be other things bc he's been present at certain events and when people "hunt" him that he'll sometimes see but often he laughs bc he isn't really doing anything other than observing them and they scare themselves and he does find it annoyingly amusing. At first it caused concern bc he didn't understand but now he is getting a better picture of it as I explain it bc I'm made human.

Fun fact about the mothman, the first reports of it never claim it looks like a moth at all. The name's origin is related to Batman, but not because of Killer Moth. The first reported sightings claimed it looked more like a bat than anything, but because the newspapers couldn't get away with calling it Batman, they called it mothman instead. Then it evolved over time into a half moth half man creature, instead of a creepy flying humanoid with red eyes.
