Dude, how you doing. Fancy reminiscing a bowl of Scottish pasta. Your finger style got me, so I changed all my tunings and got me some nice finger picks...

It's specialized line which is no longer manufactured and has the thickness of about 0.1mm, which is a few strands of hair, and it'll hold about 20 lbs. Spools are 10,000 ft each and I'll need four of them. That's enough line to stretch from Brooklyn NY to Hoboken NJ.
Can contribute for kite string via my site stiffarmingsociety

Lordzogat I'm sewing two kite sizes. One is 11 square feet and the other is about 14. These are kites which can be flown by normal kite fliers which is in stark contrast to typical altitude record kites which have 10-30x greater sail area.

Hi Brendan Burge, yes I'm in close contact with Bob Moore of Australia (flown to 14,188 ft with GPS proof) and written Richard Synergy who flew to around 13,500 ft. Bob and I agree on most topics but he doubts a small kite is capable of reaching record altitude. RIchard and I have very different conceptions of the physics required for high altitude flying but share the thrill of a challenge.

Have you ever flown Indian fighter kite. It's cheap it's fun. You can control it and perform stunts.

Do you really want to use this small kite (only one?) for the record? In which country do you want to start ?

hawkrider88, in test flights my 11 sq ft kites have flown to 7101 ft, 7015 ft, 6621 ft and 6581 ft. The 5km of test line I was using needs to be replaced and I ran into a hitch when transferring the line to a second storage spool. I was making the kites from CTF3 which, though it very light, kite weights 54 grams without electronics & 2.5mm wing spars, doesn't hold up for more than a few flights. Will go back to rip stop polyester.

Have you contacted the current world record holder? I happen to know him and also know that he is willing to help others try to best his record - oh, and he is planning another attempt himself... let the games begin!!! Good luck Jesse!!! To find the current record holder, Google "Richard Synergy"...

That record was broken in 2014 with a flight to 16,009 ft. It would be fun to have an altitude fly-off but it would be like trying to align the planets. Running one team under our (or any) civil aviation authority rules is difficult and full of red tape. I can imagine it would be very difficult to set up a zone with adequate separation of fliers.

Does anyone know why Bob Moore and the guys in Australia skipped a 2013 attempt? I understand they are doing a 2014 in September, though. Do you have any idea of when you want to make your next attempt Jesse?

We skipped 2013 because of team work commitments and overseas kite festivals. In September 2014 we broke the world record with a flight to 16,009 ft above ground level. This achievement has been recognised by Guinness World record and other organisations. You can see the record attempt on our website and TH-cam video. Our next step will be an attempt on the kite train record with a target of 40,000 ft. Jesse and I are collaborating with the development of on-board electronics including mechatonics to improve flight dynamics and enhance retrieval. It takes a lot of planning, testing and money to make record attempts. We will see how we will go with some tests in the near future.

So, where are we now in this attempt?

SvenArnvic has posted on my 2011 video. I have asked him to contact you. We have a number of posts and comments and I have asked him to clarify some methods of measurement and the specs of his line and kite.

What size of a kite are you planning on using for the record attempt? Any particular style?

hawkrider88, in test flights I've reached 7,101 ft (6km of line), 7016 ft (5km of line), 6621 ft (3.5 km of line) and 6581 ft (3 km of line). I keep running out of line. My reel, an old telephone cable reel with gears, sprockets and a line layering device, is holding up well. The altimeter is working well but the kite's been erratic. It's made from cubenfibre CTF3 which is very light but doesn't hold up well. Also, I've had some some mishaps with leading edge fittings, have improved the adhesive bond there and we'll see if it holds up. If I reach 10,000 ft I'll be surprised.
