Not to mention the fact that at the time when the Church was coming up many blacks were still enslaved, and it would have been difficult to have the priesthood and yet be under the rule of a slave owner. A lot of people also don't realize that Joseph Smith had in fact given certain blacks the priesthood at the beggining.
I am grateful for the gift of prayer whereby I can know that this was a true revelation given to President Kimball. God Bless all our priestholders, no matter what race!

Why was the priesthood limited in the first place? Was the original revelation limited or wrong?

For about 1500 years only the levites held the priesthood in israel. The priesthood partain to the Lord and only Him may decide who can receive it and when. Is not a question of democracy or equal rights. I respect your feelings and hope to have been of some help, (excuse me for my english).

This was a good video. Very interesting. I realize more and more that I certainly don't know everything, especially concerning the history of the church. But I do know that the Lord knows everything. And I do know that I have followed the teachings of His prophets and that has brought greater peace and happiness in my life and more importantly has helped me grow closer to Gdd.

I am sorry that you feel this way but I respect you. I love blacks, so much I married one. I don't understand why my parents did when I was young and at times I felt thier decisions were unfair but as I grew up I did.
I don't know why this blessing was held back for a time, I can only see part of the picture and I don't understand but I trust Him enough to know that there was a reason. I am glad my wonderful husband and I can be sealed in the holy Temple. I know this Church is true.

I was only 8-years old, and have never even heard of the Church. Six years later, I heard a commercial, and I wandered "Is this the Church that I should belong? Three years later, I met my best friend, a member of the Church. He educated me about the Priesthood, and began bearing his testimony in 1993. Finally after 8 years of persistence, three investigations, and inumerable hours of prayer, I joined the Church, and on February 3, 2002, I received the Melchizedek Priesthood.

The Book of Mormon offers a promise. Ask God if these things are true and if u ask in faith u will know of its veracity.
When u know, u m nt understand all things but u trust He has a reason why He does things. We have been to many wards after we have moved quite a bit and never felt an ounce of racism but an outpouring of love,. When people need help, the church is always there; this is the real thing. Why doesn't anybody talk about that? Why the negative? What kind of society have we become?

Amen to that Brother, I've always asked why didn't why the priesthood wasn't given earlier to my people. Then I realized that God works in his own ways, the ancient Israelites were the original recipients of the priesthood, and it wasn't given to the Gentile nations till when Christ came. Also if I remember correctly, it was the opinion of one man that has been taken out of context and it wasn't the church's doctrine. I believe with all my heart that this is the gospel of Christ...

Weeping tears of joy. The spirit that overwhelmed me during this video! A saying I heard recently from a person who stood in the presence of God and Christ in a near death experience, goes through my mind during this video.
"Modern religion truly has no concept of how humble God our Father and Jesus Christ are. If they did they would never utter one single unloving word to any of God's children."
It is such a blessing to know, and be a part of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ!!!

Our family has multi-racial members. We are so happy that those members of color are speaking out about the positive aspects of being Black in the Church.
I do not believe that men of color were denied the power of the Priesthood because of anything they did or did not do in the preexistence. It was wisdom in Heavenly Father. That is good enough for me. If one doesnt believe that God directs His Church through His prophets, then it is moot to even speculate on the whys.

Thank you for sharing. I am a member of the Church and I have a testimony that it is true as well, but I do not think that we can understand why (or if) the Lord did not allow some to hold the priesthood through the evidence you have provided. My understanding is that we have no knowledge of why the priesthood was ever denied to blacks of African decent. Joseph Smith ordained blacks, and we have no record that the Lord commanded us to stop ordaining all worthy men.

No matter what time the revelation came forth, people will always speculate that the church was allowing priesthood to be given to all worthy males because they were bending to political pressure or some other similar reason. I'm not the most eloquent speaker, but in such situations like these I just like to remember the verse where God says "My thoughts are not your thoughts and my ways are not your ways" (I doubt I wrote that word for word but you get the idea)

Well made movie but I wish it could have shown the church apologizing for their over a century of racist teachings. I wish the LDS church would repudiate the doctrines taught by apostles and prophets which taught that blacks were less valiant in the premortal existence and I wish they would admit that some of these apostles and presidents of the church were racists.

Marvelous video. I was on my 2-year mission in Louisiana in 1978 when the revelation on the Priesthood was announced. We were deliriously happy. We felt that Heaven had come down and kissed the earth and ended a nightmare. Many of our investigators at the time were black. They were the smartest, most beautiful people I had seen -- spiritually and otherwise. I love brother Darius Gray -- he is a Mormon pioneer of the first order.

God bless our black, and brown brothers and sisters, and really all of God's children!! Some of the most faithful people had a lot of challenges, afflictions, or things withheld from them for a time. Whether this is the priesthood being withheld, death of a loved one, trials like Job went through, or Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate example of things being withheld from him, when he cried: "And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
    Matthew 27:46
He gives us challenges, so that we can learn wisdom, and so we might strongly have our testimony riveted to Christ.

for the same reasons that the priesthood was limited back in the days of moses when only the tribe of levi was allowed to preform the ordinanced in the tabernacle. It sure wasn't bc the Lord was racist or bc he didnt love the other tribes. The Lord knows all and there is a purpose to the extent and time in which he reveals things.

I'm sorry, but I'm a good person. I genuinely care about people, I pray to God because I can feel there is one, I believe he sacrificed a son for mankind. But I just cannot settle into a faith that has had a history of thinking coloured races were evil at one time. It's like..."no you can't join us because your skin is black" and all of a sudden, "well ok then you can be equals with us" Sorry, I mean no disrespect, but my heart feels sad for those black people who must have felt inferior..sad

Maybe I can help. I don't think it was ever about blacks not being worthy. Most of t he world was predgudice at that time and before. How difficult would have been if just prior to the Civil War blacks would have been given the priesthood in its full capacity? The church was being attacked and persecuted so much as it is. How would White America reacting to slaves being given equal standard in church. And church kept a segregated practice in all Christian sets even during the time that this rule had changed. Could it have in actuality been a help 2 the equality of all Races rather than the way people accused the Church of being racist. If you look at the history and compare the church two other churches at that time in America there was no place where blacks and white worshiped and served together in the same congregacion. we need to step out of the box a little to get a clear view. Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Had said of Sunday that it was the most segregated day of the week in America. If you take that into account, who was the most Progressive in this area? Now go back to the video and listen to Elder Tanner again. He said the long-awaited day had finally come ... the point being that it was always intended to be available to all men no matter what race. the world paints a really different picture then the actual truth doesn't it? What was his name

Cain became a very evil individual, if you read what he did, he made secret combinations with Satan so that he gain things, he taught this to his children, he corrupted them. He didn't repent, and the thing is that, we don't know why they were forbidden to have that priesthood, but anyone with that blood in them is shown to not have priesthood if you know the OT bible, those things can be found by scholars.
It was never cains mark on his or skin color that was his problem, that was put on him and it set him apart from others obviously over time those people ended up some of them on that very hot continent of africa and over time that skin color became even darker, and if you see what happened to people on that continent over time, they mainly did not progress, there is metallurgy there in a small part, but many live like they did for centuries, no change no inventions. This is what the curse was, NOT the skin issue, what God told cain is that he could not from that point on get the full yield of his crops, so, naturally he became a wanderer, and those things he learned from Satan were taught, but the other chidlren of adam and eve didn't mix with them for a long time, so that they were not corrupted. As you know maybe, Ham married a woman whose name was changed to show her status, Egyptus means forbidden, and if you read about Noah and Ham there is a problem there about his seed serving others.
Hams children didn't hold priesthood, but what they did do, is that Ham and Egyptus grandchild disovered Egypt, the NIle at that time was rich and fertile and Egypt stands today, the math and abilities that were used to create all of that shows intelligence that can't be any higher. They created their own gods, and one thing that they took from the gospel back then was that we live again, that is part of that culture, they knew that part very well. If you hung up about skin issue, you have to ask yourself the following, why did the LOrd create us in different races, what is that all about. I guarantee you if you read the book of mormon, those issues of skin color do not stand out, and then you'll realize that many people from that line are members of Christ church, temples in Africa and many people in the US that are black have joined the LDS church, why would they do that, if they had a problem with skin color, I know why, they have read that book of mormon like I did age 21 and now I"m 67 and they found out it was divine, it's way to complex for anyone to have written.

so here is a story about Joseph Smith, I'm sure one of those you are calling racist.
there was a black man which broken a law in Nauvo, and had a fine to pay. he was pleading with Joseph because he was saving the money to buy his sons freedom.
Joseph stated the law had been broken, and that the fine must be paid.
he then turned around, and gave the man a horse. Joseph was never a man who had an abudance of possesions quite the opposite.
it was God's command not the leaders.

Why blacks were barred from the priesthood is never addressed.
Yes, God works in His own ways and yes, earlier, only Levites could hold the Priesthood. This should have been mentioned in the video to demonstrate the incredible faith all people must have to join this church, especially black members, to accept that God has a purpose for denying certain people from the Priesthood.

I am so grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for the restoration of the Priesthood of God. What a great age to be alive.

This speaks so much spiritual enlightenment, we are living in times where people look at the past to determine their current or future spiritual being. This is by all means human nature to dwell on what was and not focus on what is and to come. I grew up in this religion, my parents being converts from the polynesian islands. I cannot express how much I appreciate the love of our Heavenly father and growing up with the teachings of the lord Jesus our savior as the foundation to build a family upon. That rock that will guide and no one can speak no evil of him for he was the one and only perfect man that died in a world that was imperfect. I want my fellow brothers and sisters to think, did this man lead a simple and reasonable life? He spoke of knowledge as young as a child. Why was he not in wars but people persecuted him for helping the weak and the weary? Is this how inhumane we want to be? That as simple as to live righteously and do good to others as we want for ourselves? What do we fight for? Why do we go to wars? The political bands have become apparent that it is of transient causes to enslave people to think feeble mindedly. “Choose you this day whom ye will serve: … but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Josh. 24:15.)
