  • Emancipation Hall in the U.S. Capitol now features a bronze statue of Martha “Mattie” Hughes Cannon (1857-1932), a Latter-day Saint and the first woman elected to a state senate in the United States.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints supported the efforts to memorialize Martha and celebrate her many accomplishments. Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Matthew S. Holland, General Authority Seventy, and Relief Society General President Camille N. Johnson attended the unveiling ceremony held in the Capitol on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
President Johnson offered the invocation at the ceremony and was honored to help recognize Martha's accomplished, faith-led life. “She was determined. She was tenacious. I hope that women, including my granddaughters and my great-granddaughters, will learn of Martha Hughes Cannon and be inspired by her example,” she said.

What a great example as is Mother Cabrini, Catholic nun who founded many hospitals in the USA and has schools named after her. Such beautiful daughters of God. So wonderful to remember and celebrate some ladies that did so much for others

Wonderful story! This wonderful woman reminds me of my 3 great grandmother I believe. She came across the plains as a pioneer from the eastern US to Utah. Before she did that, when she lived in another country, she was highly persecuted for wanting to more fully follow Jesus Christ. This is because she wanted to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a result of her baptism, her family disowned her, and her brother threatened to kill her if he saw her. She came here to the US, then was kicked out of her town after Joseph Smith was killed by a mob.
She than suffered a lot to get to Utah traveling many miles I think on foot.
When her family settled in a good house, she decided that she wanted to become a doctor, so that she could minister to people like Christ did. She was one of few women doctors in Utah at that time. She blessed many people.

It’s wonderful to see her legacy recognized in the halls of our nation. Still love the fact that she ran for office as a democrat against her husband and defeated him. It’s a great story.

This statue stood proudly at the presidential Inauguration 2025; she was directly on-camera the whole time.

Sorry, not sorry but replacing Philo T Farnsworth with Martha Cannon was such a smarmy decision. Farnsworth invented the television. The Television! Y’know the primary communication conduit of the modern age, and one of most impactful inventions in human history. 🙄
