    Some more common beginner surfer mistakes: living far from the Ocean, having a mortgage, working hard on the unloved job.

    Great stuff! Maybe one for intermediates? Turning from the middle of the board/back foot not back far enough...sitting too far out in the line up and missing waves...sitting on the shoulder and missing the peak...pumping too much and outrunning sections and surfing too horizontal

      @oystercovecraftsman9219 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah same I always try to go to the quiet spots 😂

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not a silly question Lily! It's all about being aware of where people are and knowing how much control you have over your board. If you have little control, then it is best to make sure there is no one in the direction you are going on the wave. This way there is no chance of you hitting anyone. If however, you can turn your board, and you are confident in doing so, then it is just a matter of keeping your eyes open as you're surfing, and turning around people as required. Hopefully the other surfers in the water will make an effort to get out of your way! That is a part of having good surfing manners. Does this help?

      @@HowtoRip what if I’m paddling out to the line up or closer to shore and someone is on a wave heading toward me? Do I try to avoid them or stay still? Like if the pocket is heading toward me with a surfer in it do I stay still? Head for the white water? Head for the unbroken section?

    Great video, very helpful! Do you find it helps to have differing paddling positions when paddling out vs. trying to catch a wave? I'm currently surfing a 7'2" board and I find its easier to be a few cm further back when paddling out, then I scoot forward a little when I'm paddling for a wave

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out. On longer boards like your 7'2, for sure you can change your position a little. You sound like you're doing all the right things on this one!

  • @HTR92

    HAve a weird habit, apparently the heel of my back foot is spending a lot of time on the edge of the rail, every board i have had has a groove worn in on the very edge just above the tail pad. On smaller waves I can work on feeling the tail pad but on bigger faster waves it is difficult to be aware of it

    Whats the reason to surf with 4 fins, 3 fins and 2 fins! What Difference does it make?

    • @tynanbressan
      @tynanbressan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      4 fins produces more drive from the tail and let's you hold your line easier, 3 fins enables you to catch waves easier and go faster, also easier to put the board on the rail and turn harder, 2 fins is a bit slower and loose, lets you turn easy as but makes it a bit tougher to stay straight and hold your line. Hope this helped!

      If you're paddling into a wave, you look down the line in the opposite direction to see if someone is already there. If they are, you back out.
      Sometimes, if it's coordinated, two surfers can take off at a peak and go opposite directions, left and right. Pipeline is a great example of this when Pipeline and Backdoor are both working.
      Sometimes really big waves like Waimea can hold multiple surfers but you still might catch an earful in the lineup later. It's best to just never drop in on someone.

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petar and B Barker are on the money, if someone is up and riding on a wave, do not take off.
