- One of the many options for AE86 owners is to switch to a manual steering.
One thing I forgot to mention was the difference in the power and manual universal joints. The intermediate shaft side is the same. However, to the rack side is bigger in the manual joint then the power one.
I present the full how to. All 3 parts in one video.

great video! ive been gathering parts for a manual rack swap for a long time. Im finally ready! I took all the power steering stuff out minus the rack yeasterday. my pump was very worn out cause I never had oil in it so I guess it was really holding my engine back cause now it has a VERY noticeable difference in horsepower/tourque and throlle response. i notivced more of a difference then when I installed my lightweight flyweel! every 86 owner should remove their PS!
My rack was missing all that so it was easy for me. All new inner and outer tie-rods.
All the claw washer does is prevent the inner rods from backing out. Once you back the washers off you have twist off the inner tie-rods. This is when a vise comes in handy to hold the rack in place so a chanel lock can be use to twist off the rods.
Thank you sir there's two mr2's at the junk yard going tomorrow to get what I need to get rid of my power steering.
Quite a comprehensive video on the process.. Thanks for sharing.
love your vids, i'm getting ready to do this to my sr5. I wasn't going to until I watched this vid. Keep it up sir!
The blue one costs half as much. So thanks you just saved me $25 :)
Ok so you changed out the inner tie rods right? How did you get that washer loose? The one with the bends over the tie rod's flats. It's called a claw washer I think. I hammered a flat head screw driver under the bend and pried on it and all it did was bend the freaking washer! What am I doing wrong?
If the power rack is new, when you pick up the outer tie-rods the whole thing would move too?
So u used the aw11 manual rack t3 bushing, power rack inner outer tie rods, mk3 intermediate shaft. Did u have to change anything else?? And how far did you put the new shaft in?? Thanks! awsome video very helpful! !
You need the Techno Toy Tuning (T3) passenger side power to manual rack bushing, ae86 power inner/outter tie rods, ae86 manual steering/tercel/mr2 universal joint, and MKIII supra intermediate shaft. But, you are in luck. T3 now makes that part as well. So, buy the supra intermediate shaft and the bushing from T3.
Hi, like the instruction! Fair play... Just a question about the I-shaft, you know the way the supra shaft is longer and fits your p/s set-up! Would a stock manual I-shaft be too short for the conversion? Cheers!
I know I'm probably getting ahead of you but are you planning on doing any more suspension videos?
Thanks man! Helped alot!
hey, whats a good a manual for the 4ac? decided to keep mines since my cash has become extinct for a swap lol. btw your vids are helpful.
A guy on ebay was selling the package. Rack, U-Joint, and Supra Intermediate Shaft.
I'm actually doing this mod to my 86 as well and already have all the parts needed except for one.
Can you give me a link to where I can get the Techno Toy Tuning adapter bushing?
It's the only item I need so I can finish up my conversion.
I'd really appreciate it.
But how do I "back the washer off"? Are you saying I just bend back the flaps of the washer? Thanks for helping a noob out.
Hey man, Im about to do this same thing to my car and i have a question.
Using the MR2 rack, How much of the MK3 intermediate shaft do you insert into the steering column? All the way? does it bottom out? thanks
Thanks man! Do you know if there is only one rack for left and right hand drive?
You can use the AE86 manual I shaft as well.
Any AW11 steering rack will work since the AW11 only came with manual steering. Good luck finding a ae86 manual rack. Not many came here with manual steering. The difference with the racks are the length of the part that meets the universal joint. Other then that they are the same.
well this is a long shot, i really do not know if you'll respond but.... would it be better to use manual rack from an 85 corolla or like an 89 mr2. i looked up both part numbers from acdelco for a remanufac rack to see if they were same number but they are not. i have an 85 gt-s soon to be backtop swapped engine bay is almost completely empty. the idiots who had the car before me cut the power steering lines off the rack and bent them not even loop them. so i might as well go manual.
84hachi is right. On my AE86 it has AE86 stamped on the firewall and ae88 in the vin number
Informative as always, wish I had my hachi still :(.
Ugh. It is an AE86. Just because it has a 4AC doesn't negate that. The firewall has stamped AE86 in it. I direct you to another video of mine. AE86 Q & A group 1.
ts4000 (comes with blue bottle) or ts8000 (comes with yellow bottle)? thanks
hey man i was just wondering, i went to a junkyard today and picked up a manual rack out of an aw11, so all i have to do is install ae86 inner and outer tie rods n ill be fine? and which kina supra shaft do i need? is that that the newer supras?
Off what year mr2 did you get the rack and steering shaft from?
Johny Huitron you ever find out what year sw20 rack and pinion is used?
Either one would work. I used the blue one.
what did you end up having to do to install the supra intermediate shaft into the column? thanks

Blow torch
I frankly do not know anymore. I picked up mine through Toyota in 2007. It was on sale for only $7.50.
Bend the flaps back and then twist the inner tie-rods off.
Uhh no. The chassis of both cars say AE86 on the firewall. AE86/88 if for VIN decoding only.
Only purpose those things serve is to keep the rods from backing out.
@Newman12341
Yes. But, it wont be til next year.
@gilpna50
MKI MR2's only 1985-1989
MR2/AE86 Racks only.
A BF3 repair tool. :P The Bernzomatic torch.
Hey are those service manuals still availible
Does anyone know if this works for the early 82-85 Celica's? I know they share suspension, just not sure if they share the same rack.
Where did you get your tie rods from?
Autozone
Are you still running them?
Yes.
Bro can you help me. I'm trying to replace my tie rods on my sr5 and for the life of me I cant get the inner tie rod out. ???
There are these washers that are bent over the rods. You gotta bend them back and try to get them off. Without a vise it will be very very hard.
I'm sorry I would have to see pics :/ I'm trying to take off the piece connected to the rack. Looking for perhaps a tool to help me get it off?
Go buy a $20 inner tie rod tool from auto zone.
84 hachi can I use the stock mr2 u joint???
Can you buy the mr2 rack new or will I have to get one from a part out/junk yard
+infamousjuan
I've heard you can find remans but they are rare. Easier to find one in a yard or part out. Part out might be best, might get lucky and find the uni-joint and intermediate shaft too.
84hachi Oh ok thank you. I have another question, so what are all those t3 parts used for when converting?
ok thanks again. just didn't seem like the right thing to do to me but ok.
Not really. At a total stop its killer just cause of the tires I choose.
What did u heat it up with?
I used a Benzomatic.
In the video I show about how far it needs to go in, But, do not just go off that. Do your own test fittings.
hey what is the part # for the u-joint ? i can't find it online.
Look for 85-89 MR2 Steering Universal Joint
What years is power stering
All of them, 1984-1987.
is it hard to turn the steering wheel with this manual?
CroGuy75 yes
@XBrs2
The the easiest way to do it is off the car. Measure the amount that sticks out ether side. Get it equal amount protruding on either side.
Once in the car. To check, turn the wheel all the way to the left then turn to the right counting the full turns of the wheel. Divide by 2 and then center and check each left and right.
I got the aw11 rack. Does anyone know where I can get the inner and outter p/s rods so I can convert?
Rockauto, Autozone, Pepboys, etc
84hachi oh, didn't think it was that easy
What year MR2?
1st gen 85-89
@@84hachi Nice thanks for the info!
Anytime.
i can't help but laugh at how he's out of breath half the video....great video though, cleared some things up for me
Repair manual? Try to get a service manual from Toyota. I use that to fix my car.
I think you just rotate the rack But, don't quote me on that.
Heat it up with a blow torch to pull it out and nut the new one in. Once it cools it will be in there for life. Well, maybe not life but, you know what I mean.
