The border line between the urban fabric of Naples and the sea, a 20-year project. From the international competition to the realization: a journey of social and urban changes, perceptions and flows, in a dialogue between memory and contemporaneity.
A border line - the Filtering Line - aims to give the city of Naples a permeable and functional waterfront, interacting with the existing infrastructures and architecture.
The splendid complexity of intervening in a crucial hub for the Neapolitan capital leads to reflections on two different scales, the urban and the human. There are many aspects at play: the urban fabric of Naples and its active port, a transit, disembarkation and embarkation area for around four million people a year, the need for a pedestrian connection between the historic centre and the sea...
Everything is resolved with a partially underground building, capable of containing ticket offices, information points, refreshments and reception services for passengers, and of giving the city an entirely pedestrian roof, which makes it possible to enjoy the wonders of Naples at 360º: on one side the Maschio Angioino, on the other Vesuvius.
A space for the city, with an eye to the future.
