    Thank you very very much Nina for answering my questions. It a comprehensive guide and you clarified everything for me 😁
    Especially the keep flushing tip is very usefull. I tried seramis 3 years ago and the major thing i did wrong then, were all the points you talked about, no new roots when repotting. Letting it dry out(especially on the top) etcetera.
    But with this comprehensive and very usefull guide you made, it will work for me. The nelly isler is growing new growths now, so when the first roots appear she will be transitioned to seramis 😁
    Thank you so very very much for taking the time to make the video, thank you very very much 🥰❤😁

      Maykel, hi!! 🤗💐 thank YOU very much for the feedback, for watching and for the question. I am the one that is very grateful for your support and your trust. And... I am very happy to hear that your questions / doubts / what ifs were answered 🙌🏼 in the future, more questions may arise, as you watch what your orchid is doing, please always feel free to ask for any kind of info, confirmation or such thing. If a picture is required to make it easier to 'see' what you may be referring to, then email me. I may not see a video until a day later, and if that would be too long for an answer, you have my email. 🌸

    Great video! I'll be the first to admit I could probably flush my semi-hydro orchids more frequently. I've only been doing it once a week because I've been so busy. With my catasetums, I just topped up the reservoir in the middle of the week when they were empty during the summer. Bad I know! They've been doing ok, but could probably do better if I flush them more often!

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Gabrielle 🤗💐 I only flush as necessary... none of my orchids are on a flush schedule, so... whoever absorbs the reservoir, gets a flush before filling it up again. Sometimes that can take 2 weeks. But for the newcomers / the ones that are being transitioned, the regular flush is a must. Once established, it really isn't that big a deal, especially if the fertilizing is done in such a way that there is no salt build up. Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch... I wish you a wonderful Sunday!! 🌸

    🦒🦒 great vídeo, Nina !!! Wish I had it when I was doing SH. Water stale in the pot, nobody mentioned it at the time, at least I do not remember and I did not think about it.The problem was winter because the idea was watering less to keep orchids drier
    Still, my seedlings did well in leca, no reservoir though. However I was watering them everyday, in other words I was flushing without realizing it. Great info, love your videos.
    I love you too my wonderful friend, have a nice peaceful SUNday. Muchos bejos y abrazos 🤗🤗🤗🤗

      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      FFF 🥰💐🤸🏼‍♀️ You were flushing every day 😉 I find that the transition is more work, than later with an established orchid... until it is time to rejuvenate the rootball! 😅 I appreciate your feedback... there were many more things I wanted to address, but the question was that question and I did not want to go off on a tangent... which is something I can do very easily. 😬 I had 81% humidity this morning! WOW, that is what it feels like for other orchid growers who have it daily? What a luxury... I was a little 'lost' in my routine, because there was not much to do... all the leca was moist and roots were green, so 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 a little trickle on the mounts and then I was done, and I didn't know what to do with myself after that! 😅 Soon, those hours will be spent taking the orchids in and out. So, it is not as if there is more time in the winter, some other activity takes over the hours allocated chasing humidity. Still having mild night temps, thank goodness. Thank you for your insightful email, I really appreciate it! Some things I did not think of doing, so.... there is a lot of food for thought in it, and I really appreciate the time you took to write it. Thank you meine liebe Freundin!! 🥰 Have a wonderful day!! ❤️🌸

    Good stuff! I'm new to leca, and the point of frequent flushing resonates with me. Stagnant water seems not ideal for our orchids

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Nicole 🤗💐 never a truer word spoken: Stagnant water seems not ideal for our orchids!! 👍🏼 Especially for the little ones, or the ones that are just getting established! Established orchids, in this set up, are so thirsty that it is difficult to get any stagnant water developing... that is when the opposite really has to be watched out for, the drying out of the media. I have been very busy with my catasetums the past month, ... have missed the mark on the reservoir 3x in a month as I was taken by surprise just how much they are absorbing now even though their seasonal growths appear to be fully grown... I have learned a lot about catasetums this year 😬 Thank you for watching, Nicole! 🌸

    Hi Nina, very useful! The titles of your video's appear as boxed question marks. Perhaps you can look into this.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Jean 🤗💐 oh.... what is that all about? You cannot read the text in the title?🤔 May I ask what device you are on when you watch a video of mine? I am using a different font, just testing some options to be a little different and to see what would match the look of my channel. For the past 10 videos, the font is different. Is this the only video you do not see the text? I appreciate you letting me know that there is a problem, as you are the first to bring it up. For that reason, I am curious to know what device you are watching on. I will definitely look into the matter, if it is across the board, or just this video. Again, thank you for the heads up and for watching, despite not being able to read the title!! 🌸

      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you, Jean, for getting back to me on that. I will stick with testing fonts, then, because if it is only happening on an older device, I feel ok that I can keep practicing with alternative fonts. However, your observation has been very helpful and I will be able to consider the problem if it were to happen to someone else. Thank you, again, for bringing it to my attention 🌸

    1 quick question though, how big should the reservoir be? 1/3 of the pot? Or maybe more?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh! Good question! The answer is, it depends... if your orchid is quite big, and you have multiple growths that will generate a vigorous root ball, then I would suggest the have the reservoir ⅓ up the size of the pot. As you are using seramis, there is little water displacement and it will be sufficient to be effective to wick up the entire pot. IF, one day you decide to try something with leca, then, in the above scenario, I would raise the reservoir level to ½ way up the pot size. The leca being bigger, will displace more water, so there would be less in the reservoir. This is especially important when establishing orchids into the set up. Once an orchid is established, then I would be more conservative with the reservoir size, and stick to ⅓, simply because it is easier then to control the amount of water the orchid requires during the different seasons. So, look at the size of the orchid, think how long you will want to have it in the set up until it is established. If you are looking to pot into a 'forever' pot, then keep the reservoir at a happy ⅓, and keep that seramis wet. If you are concerned about dryness in your atmosphere at the start, then use a microfiber cloth to cover the seramis, or some sphagnum moss close to the base of the pseudobulb where the roots will come out, just for your peace of mind, that something doesn't happen that you could not immediately see. I don't know how much you have used SH, but do not have the old roots in the reservoir, fill that up with media before you pot the orchid. If you want to use a smaller pot, until the roots are deeper into the media, then still maintain the ⅓ ration... but you have to repot / uppot to allow for more root growth and not let the roots compact inside the pot, or they will stifle out the oxygen, if your orchid is big, go for a bigger pot and still keep ⅓ reservoir ratio. In either case, do not worry about chopping off all dead roots, when you clean the orchid up. IF you have dead roots, only, keep half on your orchid to serve as anchoring... the inorganic media will not make the inside of your pot toxic. And the regular flushing will eliminate any build up of nasties. Its best to have a stable orchid transitioning, than being too radical about 'clean' orchid. Later on, you can go all ninja on a healthy root ball, as you have seen me do with some of my collection. Sorry for the long reply. I did not address these things in the video because I did not want to assume that you didn't already know, instead, I wanted to focus on your question. I hope the above made sense... if not... keeping asking! 🌸

    So I am doing it wrong then by just topping up the reservoir from the bottom?
    I usually just check if the saucer is dry and then fill it.
    I told you I’m inept at this method. Summer is coming so I would water more often now but I need to water everything over the top?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Lynn 🤗💐 watering from below, when you havevit set up like that, is much better during the cooler months of the year, but as it gets hotter pour water through the pot generously because chances are, the water in the saucer will evaporate faster than any wicking can draw it up to the rest of the root ball. Add wind and they won't get ant of it . Its a fun season coming up for you ... today was the first morning that I walked around and hardly had to do anything... it felt odd 🙄 I'm jelly ... happy happy growing 🥰🌸

Are you seeing the same? I am playing with a different Font to see what style I can settle on, the last 10 videos have different fonts. I can see them across all my devices, ... the other day, YT would not save my description text... that was so weird! I am ok, thank you for asking. Tootsie pop Jr, is more demanding now than ever, which is a sad sign, he is very needy and that won't change much ... as his eyesight fails, especially when it gets dark, he needs help with just about everything and if he feels that he is alone, then he needs comforting that I am 'still here'... but... so far that is the only thing that is happening, so... as I am 'still here', I am all there for him. Thank you for asking 🥰 YOU, however, need to keep focussing on you! I hope that soon everything will be resolved and you will have overcome all this! Take good care of yourself.
