As a North Carolinian, I am here to explain why the University of North Carolina School of Arts has a pickle as their mascot. The school originally had no mascot so they were taking suggestions. There was a guy who was an oboe major who loved pickles and long story short he didn't get the pickles he wanted from this deli and they ran over a bunch of pickles in the parking lot, and then they submitted a bunch of pickle related stuff to the school for the school mascot and he school accepted the idea and now they're the pickles.

As someone who did community college for the first two years, it is definitely worth it. Way more flexible in scheduling in comparison to 4 year colleges both for personal things as well as jobs. Easier to transfer to the "dream school" even if you get rejected in high school (happened to me). Also gives you an idea of what the classes will be like, except for the fact people are more likely to be accommodating in the community college compared to the four year. Not always, but it's a smidge more noticeable. Weird/difficult/easy/awesome teachers can be found at both, there is genuinely no difference when it comes to teachers, curriculum, or what you learn. Really just need to keep track of credits and what's accepted.

@PhantomOutlaw since no one has answered ya, i will.
For office jobs, anything that prioritzes work with Excel, writing skills and organizing skills. I know of some community colleges that have secretarial associates degree programs, or offer certification in Word, Excel, etc.
However, you're best bet would be to pick a 2 year program and get an associates degree. This allows for you to have certification, but also opens the door for you to continue your higher education in an easier way later should you ever want to. I'd focus on programs such as:
      -Office Administration (secretary degree)
      -Coding, Software Development, etc
      -General Studies
      -Economics, Finance, Accounting, etc
      -Human Resources
Another good transitional job is being a bank teller or receptionist. These jobs tend to not require college degrees yet make transitioning to professional jobs easier.
But the most important thing would be to chose something that interests you. I hope this is a good launching point for you. Best of luck!

Agreed. If you don't need college, avoid it like the plague. But if you do, do it right. Go to community college first, then transfer to a smaller state school if they offer your degree.
Also, even while you're at the community college, make sure you take only the classes that are required for your major, and follow the degree plan from the school you're transferring to. And take as much as you can (i.e., as many credits as will transfer without any form of penalty) at the community college before transferring.
In other words: Get in, get out, as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Went all the way through university and law school, but when talking to young people about to graduate high school, I steer them to look at TRADE SCHOOLS instead of college. HVAC, electric car repair, air traffic controller, elevator repair, dental hygienist, diagnostic medical sonography, aviation maintenance technology (or learn this in the military and be an aircraft or helicopter repairman in civilian life), home inspector, petroleum technology (especially offshore oil rig worker), and remember some plumbers charge more than patent attorneys!

Fun fact in scotland our tuition fees are normally around $2500 a year and if you're a scottish citizen your tuition is covered by the government for up to 5 years of tuition. Though this also includes any years you spent to do low level qualifications at community college
Our student loans are actually just living costs loans. The minimum you're elligible for is around $650 a month and this goes up with some of the loan waived if your parents make less than $60k a year or therabouts.
Also when it comes time to repay the loan there is no interest on it and you're under no obligation to start paying it back until you're earning over a certain amount per year. At which point it comes off as a low percentage of your monthly pay automatically like taxes. Oh wait u guys dont have ur taxes done automatically either lol

    In order:
    1) Find the state school--not the prestigious place--that has the program you want.
    2) Find out what pre-reqs they want.
    3) Get those pre-reqs out of the way at the nearest Community College while you work a service job. Those jobs are easy to get with experience and tipped ones pay well.
    4) Transfer when you're ready, but leave the job on good terms if you have to move.
    5) Get settled into your new school and find a comparable job to the one you left.
    6) Finish the degree.
    7) Stay put or go home depending on your job prospects/major.
8a) If you'll need postgrad work, go to the prestigious place now.
8b) If you just have to job hunt and need to go home to save money while you do, check back in with the old employer.
    9) Be good to your parents. Do more around the house than you used to. Tell your parents you love and appreciate them.
    10) Slowly retreat from bursts of effort job hunting as you take on more responsibilities at the good ol' job.
11a) You'll eventually find a good job that makes as much use of your work experience as your degree.
11b) You'll end up running the good ol' job.
    12) Make peace with either. You'll be okay.
    13) Care for and cherish your time, health, and the people around you.

Its basically college on easy mode. Without most adult responsibilites, college is dumd fuck easy.In my 6 years, ive only met a couple “rich college kids” that were genuine people who didnt just get bankrolled through college, and they were all children of people who did extremely well in trades . As far as why they do to college, its because the parents need to believe their kids are doing something, and the kids have been told their whole life to go to college

There are benefits to getting out of your parent's house and getting exposed to a lot of new people and new ideas, and if the major is one that gets progressively harder over time, having that pre-existing support structure can make or break you passing class.

These are all valid points, but as an upcoming college sophomore, I just experienced one of the best years of my entire life, and I don't think I'll ever regret immediately going to a four year college after high school. It's not the path for everyone, but if it is, it *really is.* I was happier than I've been in YEARS, and it's because I was enveloped in an environment surrounded by people my age with common interests, had access to a fascinating education and resources, a beautiful community and campus, and so many fun, interesting people and events. So basically, all this to say, if you're planning on going to college, all of what Big Tugg said is pretty much true, but if you think college is the right thing for you, those things will be minor issues in the overall picture :) (other than the debt, that is defo an issue, but just be smart with your goals)

Lack of etiquette regarding common laundry rooms was and continues to be the bane of my existence. People will leave their stuff in the dryers in my building for hours. The longest time anyone ever left their stuff is indeterminate because they never came back for it. What in the hell. I go to the laundromat now instead.

Most RAs at my college are pretty chill so I got lucky I guess(people basically said that any strict RAs loosen up really quickly as it’s more stressful to be strict than anything), but my RA for one semester straight up told us that if we don’t want something to be reported, don’t have it in plain sight. If it’s seen, it has to be reported, but if it isn’t, it doesn’t have to be and it’s not worth the trouble for them to search 40+ people’s rooms since they have classes and hobbies as well.

we in the uk have pretty similar experiences at uni, With the singular biggest difference being that you pay a percentage of the money you make over 26k a year, and the debt is wiped after a long ass period of time if you never pay it. I would never suggest you go to uni unless you 1. Genuinely love, or know you will pursue that career for many years to come, and 2 .Are choosing a degree that will actually lead to a career as allot of them are just created to spung of the government. And yes, you can learn pretty much everything from uni for a fraction of the price in a much more condescend period of time online, but almost know one does that cuz they want the socialization and party's.

If I could go back in time, I wouldn't (lol), but only because I met my husband at my first college (took three schools and 5.5 years - with a semester off - to get the dang BA).
But that aside, if I could, I'd go to my local community college and also work at some dumb minimally paid internship or apprenticeship, then reassess my plans/dreams once I completed the Associate degree. I'd probably then attend an in-state school (my parents covered what they could, but I went to a private and then an out-of-state public university) to avoid debt, and study something that really roused my curiosity - whether or not I already had a knack for it - and actually just focus on studying for learning's sake.

Ironically the mascots were a couple. At a pep rally they got into a fist fight. An ACTUAL fight. It took ten teachers to seperate them (four for the girl and six for they guy) because it looked like they were actively trying to kill each other. Turns out the guy forgot their three year anniversary and it was the last straw for the girl lmao.

It could be worse. We had a vending machine in the Laundry room at my dorm, and someone managed to get into it and steal a bunch of stuff like chocolate bars, and sodas, then opened them, threw them in a dryer for a while, and somehow thought it was cool and funny. He was kicked out by the end of the day, because somehow, even though there were signs, he forgot not only that there were cameras, but that you had to use your student badge to scan into the room, so they knew exactly who it was.

i was in an accredited culinary program. our finals vary depending on the class. my final for advanced pastry arts was to make a tiered wedding cake based on a color theme, with tasting cupcakes, a filling, and some other components. We were graded on a few things - like we needed to have all of the components, needed to fit the theme. Then we were graded on things like texture (so for example if you overmixed your batter, the cupcakes are tough and not fluffy). Presentation - if you had fondant, was it smooth or full of rips? same for buttercream. Did you make the buttercream correctly? did it split? Lots of stuff. I wouldn't say you need to go to culinary school to have a career as a cook. if you want to do that. :)

The best decision I made after high school was to go to a community college and later make the decision that college wasn't for me. Saved me a lot money.

  • @sumirunihon
    @sumirunihon ปีที่แล้ว +58

As a young gen z (2004) i made the decision to not go to college and focus starting my own business. Basically i work on motorbikes and cars and sell them online. It's been almost a year and i can definitely say i made the right decision and saved the money i would've otherwise wasted into my bank account, investments, and back into my business.
The toughest part is that i don't see people my age at all and it really sucks. I'm an extrovert and i don't usually get the chance to interact with or make friends with people my age other than on discord. We are facing a demographic crisis atm. Less and less people are being born nowadays due toba rising cost in living and college is really the only haven for young people to meet other young people.
Socializing is pretty important but there are definitely workarounds. Like i said, discord is a surefire way to meet people your age but they'll be all over the world and the timezones might be all wonky especially if you're not EST.
Also face to face connection is still and always will be important for mental health. One way to do so is to just go for walks or jogs around your neighborhood and just give a friendly hi or wave to people who seem close to your age. This is especially useful if you have a dog. In general it's just a friendly gesture and most people don't usually have someone say hi to them these days so it'll make them feel good and like you more. If you do this regularly enough to the same people, they'll surely get chummy enough to talk to you.
Another great way to meet people your age is to go to events where there's gonna be alot of young people. For me, there's a theme park very close to where i live and i've met alot of my friends there. That might not exactly apply to you but there are many other community events you can participate in.
It's june so it's pride month so if you're gay or lesbian or bisexual or even if you're straight it's a great way to make friends and socialize with people your age and have some common interest or even just have fun and enjoy yourself and all around the vibes are good.
Bars and clubs might also work too. I mean hey, in all likelihood you were gonna get hammered in college anyway. The key is just to open up.
If you're leaving high school and you're not sure if you want to go to college, don't feel pressured to go right after high school. You have time. Don't rush. Feel free to take a break year or 2 to figure out what you really want to do. Living with your parents after high school is underrated and in all likelihood if your honest with them they'll be chill about letting you stay with them depending on how strict they are. Worst case scenario you can take a job at subway or something and have enough to afford a few roommates.
Use your break year to figure out what you want to do and whether or not college is really necessary for that skill. We live in the age of information and basically any in demand skill can basically be learned for free on youtube.
You don't even necessarily need to start a business like i did. TH-cam content for instance is an extremely in demand market and probably will continue to be for the foreseeable future. You can learn video editing and try to get hired by youtubers to edit their videos. From what i know video editing is not very difficult to learn and will get you started working online with content creators and can open a world of networking with creators with already big audiences. At the very least it's a great side hustle and will give you a good portfolio.
Videography is also another skill that's relatively easy to learn on youtube. All you really need is a few months of knowledge and some equipment. If you live in or around decently big urban area, you can film music videos for young aspiring rappers and musicians in your city. These musicians need to get their content out there and the best way to do it is with music videos. These can work as freelance or specialize with one or a group of artists.
If you already have skills that you just do for fun like drawing or music, you can absolutely use that to your advantage. If you love to draw, and especially if you're really talented, hone in on those skills even more and leverage them for other creators. There's this channel named "The Histocrat". He makes videos about ancient history and he hires artists to draw visual representations of life during those time periods. Many creators can use your skills for more visual appeal.
If you wanna delve into the realm of animation, many big and medium sized animation channels hire other animators to do inbetweens to make life easier for them and so they can make videos at a faster and more efficiently. The same thing may also apply to 3D animation with softwares like Blendr.
If you're really into music, you can hone more into production and composition skills and make beats for rappers or collaborate with other musicians. All of these come with networking perks.
Even more complex skills like programming or computer hardware can be learned on youtube. It might take a few years rather than months to really get it down but compare 4 years of practical learning and youtube to 4 years of practical learning, plus tests and assignments, minus a few thousand dollars.
These are all just off the top of my head. The key is to think outside the box. If you have something you're even vaguely interested in, chances are there is a very marketable skill associated with that you can learn for free online.
Even tho many of us gen z don't remember a time before the internet alot of us still have this old gen x mentality of going to college to get a degree that you'll put on your resumé to get hired by a big company that you'll work at for the rest of your life and use the money you make from that job to someday pay off your college debt when the new paradigm allows for way more freedom and flexibility than that.
There are of course exceptions to this like if you want to become a professional athlete or a doctor, or a lawyer or an engineer or a professor then yes, you legally have to get a degree, but for the most part, employers are not really looking for a piece of paper with the name of a fancy academic institution on it, they're looking for practical skills that can be immediately useful to them.
Like he said in the video trade schools and community colleges are great alternatives. You'll learn practical hands on skills for a low price and possibly even for free. But for the most part, most people who are going to college don't need to.
College is a bubble. In the US and Japan (not sure about everywhere else in the world) college is heavily subsidized by the government just like the housing bubble before the 2008 crash and same will likely happen with college in the near future.
Don't just go to college because your parents and friends are pressuring you to. How you prepare yourself for the workplace and what line of work you eventually go into is entirely a personal decision. Who knows, you might find you saved a few thousand dollars. good luck to everyone out there.

Hi everyone, I’m going to community college right now. Every adult out of college that I tell about this says 1 of 2 things: “you are a genius” or “that’s what I should’ve done” Here are some of the many benefits I get:
-Significantly cheaper tuition cost for the same gen eds as any other college in the US
-Smaller, more intimate classes where all of my teachers know and care about me
    - The ability to explore classes and electives to find what it is I want to do in life
    - 2 extra years to decide what I want to study
    - pretty easy classes and forgiving class times (earliest class starts at 11, classes end at 1:45 daily except for wed when I have a lab)
    - a LOT of free time to enjoy hobbies
    - more time with family
    - many many more
Feel free to ask questions, I would 1000% advocate for going to community college instead of committing to a college that wants to suck all your money out of you. I do plan on transferring to a regular college after my 2 years, but I’ve saved so much money already.
