WARNING:
Rockets are not toys, and this project really should not be duplicated. This video is mainly for educational and demonstrational purposes. If you’re going to attempt it anyway, I highly suggest contacting local rocket clubs to become familiar with local laws, and how to stay out of trouble with the FAA, and avoid hurting any people or property. Playing with unstable rocket motors could result in serious injury, property damage and/or legal ramifications. Use of this video content is at your own risk.
You should be aware that misuse, or careless use, of rocket propellants or ignition of an incendiary or explosive material may not be legal in your area. Check local laws and inquire with local rocketry clubs on how to safely make and launch sugar rockets.

Project Inspired By:
4 years of testing and experimenting with sugar rockets, and recently a lot of influence from the book “Easy PVC Rockets” by Jason Smiley. (bit.ly/IBEasyPVCRockets) If you check out the link, please share the love and let Jason know that Grant Thompson sent you. :) Thank you!
My friend NightHawkInLight also has an awesome video on a different method of making a cored rocket with black powder. You can see that here: bit.ly/IBBPCoredRockets
Project History & More Info:
After making my video on Homemade Rocket Fuel (bit.ly/DIYRocketFuel) I had a lot of requests on how I built the one that launched at the end of the video. Although that rocket motor worked very well, I wanted to get the process down to a science before making a video about it.
This project video shows a slightly different approach to the sugar motor using the same ingredients, and a demonstration of how the rocket motor performs. The main difference is that this is rammed powder as opposed to caramelizing the sugar mix.
Sugar rockets are the slowest burning of all rocket fuels, and it's highly unlikely that PVC will explode when using kitty litter plugs and sugar for the propellent. In all my destructive testing, and controlled attempts to get one to fail catastrophically, the PVC was never damaged. All that would happen is that the plugs would blast out.
Saying that, I wouldn't use PVC with black power rockets. That is a different story altogether.
These motor blasted up over 2,300 feet high without any payload, which has been very consistent with all the motors I made for the project video.
Some people wonder how I was able to measure it at 2,300 feet high. It's a rough guess based on my raw video footage. I was able to detect the apogee of the rocket by a timed delay mix showing the arch, then measuring the time from apogee to impact. It was just about 12 seconds exactly, and I entered that into a gravity calculator for falling objects (www.gravitycalc.com/) and got a result of 706 meters, which is 2,316 ft.
Although the project video shows step-by-step how to build the motors, I would caution anyone wanting to make one to take precautions. These are not toys. They can light things on fire, and fall down on peoples heads, which I imagine could cause serious injury.
You may need permits, or only be able to launch these on special experimental launch days with local rocketry clubs.
My launch was out in the middle of the dessert, miles and miles away from any people, property and anything flammable. Safety precautions were in place in case anything went wrong.
Having said that, I’m very proud of how these little motors perform, and amazed at how cheaply they can be made.
To see how to add a time delay mix and parachute ejection charge, make sure to watch part 2 (Redneck Rocketry) bit.ly/RedneckRocketry

hey Destin! I love your stuff buddy!
I made these rockets about 4-5 years ago with my brother! The process was so fun we felt like scientists haha. Once we perfected them we showed our dad and his reaction when he saw it fly so high we lost track of it was so funny and wholesome. He just looked up and smiled, chuckled, then walked back inside while saying “don’t get in trouble with the police” haha
I'm trying to make them and for some reason they won't take off, there isn't enough thrust for some reason. Any tips?

Nice job there Grant! You should make some core burner tooling so you don't have to drill holes. It wouldn't hurt to get some parallel wound rocket tubes also, safer than pvc.
.
Hey, just wanted to say you guys are all awesome. I notice you liked and shared this video like crazy. I wasn't expecting that, so it blew me away. I do appreciate it, so thank you, everybody!
Planning reproducing this on a smaller scale; don't really want the power of an E class motor.
This project is the best so far! But can you make a video on how to make the body of the rocket? Or how to keep it flying straight?
The body of the rocket was the pvc engine casing, and you can use fins if you need help to stay straight.
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random"
Hey Grant,
I can't express how excited I am about this but I have some questions though. Why did you not cook the fuel like the last time You did these ? Also, is there any point in adding a rust or is it pointles in this mix? Why did you not use it in this case? I thought it gives more thrust to the rocket.
Thanks in adance.
Your fan Juraj.

"shake it by hand for about 3 minutes." - Story of my life.
I made similar rockets in 1970, we used equal by weight potassium nitrate and powder sugar, a pinch of sulfur and pinch of charcoal. We just rolled paper around a marking pen, put part of a cotton ball in the top and masking tape, we put our fuel and fuse, folded the paper and taped the bottom end closed, added a stick. We could make one in just a few minutes. We were 12 and we made our own fireworks also.
How to make fireworks please wanna make a rocket or a lot 😂
send a picture. hard to imagine how the propellant would leave the paper
How many of you survived?

Very important to buy SCH 40 PVC pipe, its rated at 480 PSI. Anything less and your making a bomb instead of a rocket engine! Trust me, I know from experience! Wear eye protection everyone! Love the channel, keepem coming!
+schel sullivan Thnx for the advice! I returned my cheaply made PVC pipe because I thought it was practically the same!
I was wondering if HPVC would be better.
Joel Craig, HDPE or similar will work well, paper too.

I tried your method absolutely perfect so I continued on perfecting my skills at making them if u use super glue combine it with the cat litter and do multiple layers of cat litter stoppers is combined with super glue and a smaller hole these go out the atmosphere easy and newly instantly
Here's another trick: make the fuel and then put it in a metal pot. You can put it your oven at 125-150°C for just under half an hour. This takes the potassium nitrate's ability to act like potassium naturally does.
Hi @Trevor Quinnell I was going to make a few rockets but I don't know how I would attach the fuse to the rocket and is the fuse just to light the mixture?
Also first one I watched, you brought us all great fun and enriched our imaginations. RIP big guy...
This might be the best thing you've ever showed on this channel!
Coolest video ever. I've never heard of something easy and cheap like this. I seem this when it first came out. Now he is gone. R.I.P to the best guy ever.
Great job and great tutorial I’ve been flying model rockets for about 50 years now but I am now taking my grandson out and decided to start making my own I start smaller than the motor you built I might consider it a half a but I use your rules any seem to work quite well still working out how to make the delay reliably for Parachute deployment
This is the video that made me and my boys realize blowing things up and shooting things into the sky are something we all love
Hey Grant, what's the biggest sugar rocket you can build? Are these scalable? Looking to recreate H-type rockets for an Iron Man flight project I'm working on... So we need 50+lbs of thrust per rocket. Is that possible?
I suppose it's possible, but beyond the scope of my experiments. Have you thought about working with commercial motors?
We've been working with G-Class motors, which are the highest you can buy without a license. They top out at about 25lbs of thrust for 1.7s, which isn't very ideal.
We'd get a license, but there aren't actually any licensing clubs in Ontario, so we would have to drive down to the states to do a course ... and then as soon as they saw what we're using these rockets for (human propulsion) we'd have our license revoked haha.
+the Hacksmith I am so pumped for the first iron man test flight. Dangerous for you... Entertaining for us!
Didnt expect to see you here. I have a major concern about your big project, you might get the right materials but can you try to experiment with cooling systems? DARPA developed a glove that you can cool your hands in to lower temperature, and that can be used in your project. Cool the suit, and your body. That way, even in high temperature you can work to the maximum of your ability. Good luck!

Something to consider; off-the-shelf confectioner's sugar usually contains corn starch to act as an anti-clumping agent. Use regular crystal sugar in your blender separately, and you can make powdered sugar without any contaminants.
Actually cornstarch is also explosive by itself in the right circumstances
@@mikburton5028 Which circumstances?
LD Texas when in contact with heat i suppose
Huh, neat
@@ldtexas1648 Love to hear from Mik on how cornstarch is "explosive by itself" as even heat/shock or extreme pressure is required to detonate any explosive. Therefore, my guess is that he is referring to aerialized corn starch (or any combustible fine powder) is extremely flammable. Depending upon the situation (amount aerialized, humidity, space size, airflow, etc.) it can create conditions that are ripe for a flash fire. Even then though, there has to be an ignition source. Grain elevators and factories that produce lots of fine powder require extra ventilation and grounding straps (and sometimes non-sparking tools during operations) to avoid this very issue.
Worked like a charm. Grandma didn't stand a chance.
Very neat! As a kid our Boy Scout group made model rockets. I think the "motor" part was a Estes brand. They were lit with electricity from a battery and toy launch pad. It was fun! I had no idea that you could make your own.

+THTerra Way back in the early 70s, when I was about 12, the older kids down the street (they were 18, 19) were making sugar motor rockets. I witnessed many launches. This all ended when one of the kids lost a few fingers when one of his motors blew up on him. A few years later I played with model rockets - always with commercially-made motors. Fun stuff, but treat it with the respect it deserves.

If you want your sugar rocket to be more powerful add crushed celluloid to the mix. The celluloid will provide more oxygen so you get more power when burning the mix. I used to make rockets and found it to be the perfect mixture. Ping pong balls are made of celluloid. You can add two or three crushed ping pong balls to mixture.
