Once when I was 17 and a karateka in Shorin-Ryu, a new guy came to class and then we all did partner drills. A cocky kid, I was the fastest and strongest in my class and I was partnered with him. Every time our forearms clashed, I felt like I had hit a steel post, full force. My arms went numb several times and I got irritated. I swallowed my pride at the end and struck up conversation with him.
He had been an Uechi-Ryu karateka for over 15 years.
That was probably the most humbling experience of my life and when I truly realized belts don’t matter.

Incase anyone is confused, he was hardening his bones, all those punching and kicking of the hanging bamboo (idk name), makes the bone density scientifically harder, it's called 'Partial Training', idk how but it just makes the bone harder and alot tougher when you do that, I think the body adapts to the damage that's being done to the bones.

    • @mylifeisacomplexpastiche7901
      @mylifeisacomplexpastiche7901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

First, the hanging bamboo is called a makiwari. Second, the bones are hardened by micro-fractures caused by striking or load bearing on a person's bones being filled in and repaired by osteoblasts, a process called Wolff's Law. It's pretty fascinating.

(Have to cut them from the base, clean them and to collect them to make fences for our orchard cuz the pigs just loves to dig around and eat our sweet potatoes.)

Increase bone density by inflicting micro fractures, but its easiest arthritis you could ask for, if you're no pro fighter trying to become world champion of whatever, its not necessary and will give you lots of pain down the road, speaking from experience, started that training at my 18 years old and at my 30s have some issues with my hand. Also my master had hard as rock knuckles but also suffers from arthritis like symptoms.

For the peeps that don't understand... this training causes micro fractures in the bone, which re heals constantly over again through time and makes the bone density thicker in the hands. It's similar to training muscles and causing micro tears in the muscle fibers which reheal and cause the muscles to be stronger.

A lot of styles call for "active defense", meaning you are not just throwing up a limb as a barrier, but using that limb to seek out and "attack the attack".
You have to remember the roots of Okinawan Karate styles: it was developed to allow poor farmers to fight armed and armored Samurai and bandits. The armor of a foe not only makes him resistant to fists, but it also gives him more heft, so if you just block blows, you might be thrown off balance.

there is no proof for that since kyokushin and muay thai usually don't have any competitions against each other, it's a totally different system, kyokushin would be obliterated in a muay thai match cause they never dealt with punches to the head, and muay thai no idea if they would fare well in the kyokushin system since the distance is extremely close and I am not sure if muay thai grappling is allowed in kyokushin, so it's a bit of a bullshit comparison to begin with

of course it is used in mma and many fights have been won, but the poster said that many muay thai guys are losing to kyokushin, which simply is not true. there is a reason why there is such a small amount of karate fighters in mma. of course it is useful, but dont say it is more effective than muay thai.

Poor guy, no guard at all.
Whatever striking exercise you're doing you should ALWAYS be starting from and returning to a guard position.
Training yourself to keep your hands down by your waist, punch, and return them to your waist is a great way to train yourself to get your chin rocked, and get knocked tf out. 😂✌

      That's like saying
"Why have an education when you can die at any time."
There's one quote that's very fitting here "If you don't love the process, then you don't deserve the reward"
Martial arts is a way of life, they probably do it because they love what they are doing. There is no goal or end, there are always things to learn and train for.

Well, it's a bit more complicated than that: Japan wasn't very homogeneous - in contrast to Ryukyu. In the japanese medieval society the hierarchy results out of the owners of large estates. From them resulted the feudal samurai class and the daimyo. Those very the founders and owners of their respective family bujutsu style. Usually those styles consisted out of fencing, pole arms, construction of fortifications, village planning and construction, espionage and strategies and tactics... ->

[2]... that don't fit into the romanticized views of bushido from the 17th or 18th century. It weren't the villagers or farmer that made the arts, though they were trained by their landlords as soldiers for using them as ashigaru or shinobi. Take kobudo in the Amami islands for example: There is evidence that the Shimazu clan created a militia from villagers. But it wasn't some art developed by farmers that they usually trained. The commoners' "arts" would be sumo (or kumi uchi/ tegumi).
