Beating Burkitt's Lymphoma - Christen's Story - The Nebraska Medical Center

  • Omaha, Neb - Christen Nino De Guzman knew she was sick. The 21-year-old student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was sleeping all day and missing class because she felt so tired. She assumed she had the flu.
"I went to a hospital in Lincoln and they told me I was anemic," said Nino De Guzman. "But in the next few weeks, I developed horrible night sweats -- my sheets and clothes would just be soaked."
She soon ended up in an emergency room and was given antibiotics for bronchitis. Unfortunately, she continued to get sicker.
"I finished school for the summer and was back home in Omaha," she said. "My mom took me to a hospital here and they discovered I had tumors throughout my abdomen. But after two weeks of testing, they still didn't have a definitive diagnosis. Meanwhile, my stomach was blowing up like I was seven months pregnant. Doctors thought it was from all the fluids I was getting, but in reality it was the tumors tripling in size."
That's when her mom had Christen transferred to The Nebraska Medical Center. "Immediately, there was a team of doctors around my bed trying to figure out what was wrong," said Nino De Guzman. "Within a day or two, they told me I had a type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma called Burkitt's lymphoma. I remember one of the E.R. doctors telling me they thought it was stage four, but he said 'I think we can cure this.' I would cling to those words for the next four months."
"The kind of lymphoma Christen had accounts for only 1% of adult lymphomas," said Philip Bierman, MD, hematologist/oncologist at The Nebraska Medical Center and one of the physicians who treated Christen. "It requires aggressive chemotherapy, but it can be extremely difficult to diagnose and there are other kinds of lymphoma that can be confused with it."
"Patients like Christen should be treated at a place that has the experience with the chemotherapy that's required for this lymphoma," said Dr. Bierman. "In this part of the country, we probably have the most experience with it."
After several rounds of intense and complex chemotherapy, Christen was recently declared cancer-free. She just returned from a trip to New York City and has big plans for the future.
"I feel so thankful to live so close to the number one hospital in the world for treating my kind of lymphoma," said Nino De Guzman. "It's a place where people come from all over the world to get treated. This will definitely be a special Thanksgiving for my family and me."

I went thru CLL treatment in 2009. In 2021 my cancer came back much worse. I had CLL and Burkitt's. I was in palliative care waiting to die when I was finally diagnosed and moved from palliative care to a cancer clinic for treatment. I was at stage 4. I did 4 rounds of intense chemo, almost died twice, but pulled thru and in remission now. I am also dealing with some side effects from treatment but I am vertical, alive and still kicking.

I was 14 years old when iwas diagnosed with sporadic burkitts lymphoma, the year was 1992 i was just going into the 8th grade and playing volleyball very athletic. I was given an 80% chance of survival rate did a year of chemotherapy went into remission but after the year of treatment i relapsed in the central nervous system😢 my eyes went crossed and the right side of my face went paralyzed. They told me at the age of 15 i was going to have a very slim chance now i was given a 5% chance of beating the cancer i had a stem cell transplant full body radiation i beat the cancer with a god given miracle❤ my face and eyes went back to normal. I am happy to be alive but suffer many bad side effects from all the major two years of treatment , cant have children, wear hearing aids have osteo necrosis from the prednisone plus a major stroke. But i am alive and 44 years old and jesus keeps me pain free and healthy as a horse doctors are amazed how healthy i am after what i have been through . God bless everyone who has battled any type of cancer doesnt seem to matter how healthy we are to get it . P.s because i was at such a bad stage doctors said i was cured shen i remained cancer free for 2 years . And its been 29 years cancer free long story made short love❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ again giod bless you all

Its been terrible waiting for the diagnosis and scheduling of appt, but finally I am starting on Thursday. I pray for a cure outcome and immediate relief from symptoms. I have Burkitt's lymphoma and my lymphoma has gotten alot smaller with 2 rounds of chemo, 2 years ago I had a stroke and I beat that, now I will beat Burkitt's Lymphoma too. The day after I found out that I had lymphoma I met with the cancer doctor at the VA Hospital, had a bone marrow biopsy and was admitted to the hospital, the 3rd day I had my 1st chemo, and the next 2 days my 2nd and 3rd chemo's.

With proper treatment, Burkitt's is very survivable. Even though it is one of the most aggressive kinds of cancer, that ironically makes it one of the most treatable with the proper drug regimen.

My 8 year old son was diagnosed with mature B cell non Hodgkin burkitts lymphoma. He had one round of intense chemo and suffered complications blockage in his bowel which then perforated. He had another round of chemo and were told he had relapsed/refractory. The hospital we are at in the uk is said to be the best children’s hospital in the world “great Ormond street hospital” but we spent 10 days on their paediatric ward with all the signs and symptoms of cancer and it took them near on 2 weeks to diagnose him.
I am beyond heart broken for my son. He is being given a anti Body treatment called Blinatumomab which only treats ALL AML in the hope it gets his cancer down to have his bone marrow transplant. If this doesn’t work there is a clinical trial which has only been treated on mice. I am so angry with the hospital and his doctors as Oliver my son is such a unique case that I wish his doctors who haven’t got the experience with this would of pointed us in the direction of a hospital/doctor that has earlier on. I am praying this is his journey to his remission. He has been through so much and his still going through it. He begs me everyday for his life to go back to normal it’s devastating just heartbreaking. Please pray for my Oliver to get his remission

How can we find out what all this treatment entailed? We would very much like to compare it with what my son is having in Portland. He was in the middle of a more general type of chemo before they knew exactly what type he had. His is Birkitts too. They finished the first chemo round about a week ago. He has a very tenacious pneumonia that is being treated with multiple antibiotics. They don't want to do any other chemos until his antibiotics are finished. He's really weak and quite depressed but tries to move around as much as he can. He's in isolation because of another infection he got. I sure wish I could know he's getting the very best treatment for this unusual type of cancer. It has really crushed our family.

I feel like I have this or some type of Lymphoma. I'm from upstate New York and I'm broke because working is so difficult. I had to walk out and quit my job about three weeks ago because I had an embarrassing episode which involved me feeling really confused and then very hyperactive. I feel my organs are enlarged and I have several lumps from my neck and chin, down through my chest into my abs and in my groin. I also have EBV, having mono two years ago and ever since then I've felt so exhausted. Now it's more or less a depression. I have no idea what to do about it considering I can't even afford copays. I'm turning 23 in November and I still live at home. I feel like my life is ending.

We go back May 18th for his final CT and PET scans as well as bone marrow and spinal fluid check. He finished his last treatment April 4th. He received many medicines, Cytarabine, Etoposide, Methotrexate, Vincristine, Cyclophosphamide were the major ones. It really wiped him out, at one point he went from 176 lbs to 134 lbs. He played soccer and hockey. His treatments have been finished for a month now, his numbers are still low but he's feeling good. I am sure Nebraska is a wonderful hospital but so is St. Jude's if you can go there.
