Bird Tricks is a site that is from professional bird trainers who have so many videos on bird training! You might want to check some of their videos. They have a lot on target and clicker training. Good luck with your cute little parrotlet!
My Parrotlet was VERY similar to Ella when I bought him from the Breeder, very bitey. So I put him in my Shirt and just went about my business around the House. I did this for about a week and finally he would come out of my shirt on his own and climb to my shoulder and just sit there quietly, and that was that, we have been best buds ever since. Now if she bites your belly or anywhere else on your torso, wear 2 shirts and put Ella in-between them, and that should solve that Issue. I am telling you, once these little Parrotlets Trust You, they are the Best little Friend You could have. This really does Work, I Hope you try it!!
Good job on being patient and resisting the urge to shake off Ella when she bites, as shaking her will make the bite worse. Just keep trying and she'll begin to fully trust you.
Thanks! :) I've actually had quite a bit of success with Ella and clicker training and our relationship has been strengthened by it all. I have some videos on her channel EllatheParrotlet if you are interested. :)
You're so patient with her, she's very lucky to have such a nice mama, even when she's a rotten little bird lol. I do like at the end how you could just see her make the decision to be gentle so she could get the sunflower seed!
So cute! I just bought a parrotlet baby boy and named him Meeko! I’m going to start off baby steps and try this . I started wearing gardening gloves because it doesn’t hurt when he bites
Hi, I owned a yellow crowned amazon for 10 years, lots of training there. Maybe you should start training her on neutral ground away from her cage, on a separate stand or table, and then move on to the cage. You are doing great, she looks like a happy little bird.
How did you bring her to wash room? Toweled her in her cage. I have blue male fallow and he is scared of hands... I have to towel him and then we have 10 minutes of head rubs, holding him towel.. He wants to bite and bite hard .. I will win the battle someday ... 👍. Ella seems to be so fluffy? My male goes to sleek and fluffy, but is not always fluffy like Ella?
Youre doing really well. And its so great that youre still trying even tho its taking a long time. Try having her come to the treat not putting ur hand at her
I just got my 2 month old parrotlet! I out an entire spray of millet hanging in the cage as I read you should do for the first week. I have a vision L01 cage and the food/water trays are at the bottom and so far I haven't actually witnessed him drinking out of it. Little worried that maybe it doesn't know it's there
I am just wondering, isn't that cage bar spacing way too wide for Ella? I have a male, whiteface pearl pied cockatiel, and I have 1/2 in bar spacing for my Einstein. :) And I have heard that that 5/8 in would be the MAX for a cockatiel, and it looks as though your cage bar spacing is 1 in. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) I know that parrotlets are significantly smaller than cockatiels, and I was just wondering how she doesn't injure herself through the cage bars. :( I don't want anything to happen to poor little Ella. If you could comment back it would be greatly appreciated because I, myself, am planning on adding a parrotlet to my flock! :) Thank you! P.S. I LOVE your channel BudgetBunny!
I have and I also have several books. They all say to be persistent and to ignore the biting. lol. Some recommend getting her wings clipped but I'm still on the fence about that as I didn't really like what it seemed to do to her emotionally.
Awww I'm sorry for all of the bites you had to endure. :/!I remember having to do the same with a sassy little parakeet I used to own. It was worth it in the end though. :) Ella sure it beautiful!
I clip my budgies' wings (all three of them!) for their own safety but I just brought my baby parrotlet home last week and she is the sweetest cuddliest bird (thanks to her breeders), so I'm considering letting her wings grow out and see how that goes!
Hahaha oh I know you really see the wheels turning in her head, like I so want to bite Mom's finger off but if I'm nice I get that sunflower seed haha. Sometimes it hurts my ego when she nips as I'm used to animals just naturally loving me but I have to love her spirit! lol
Thanks, I actually started with millet but stopped as she ignores the millet and goes straight for my hand! She is a naughty little thing! That's why I thought if I got her gently taking the treats from my hand then we could progress to millet and she won't attack me.....I have no idea I'm just trying different things to see if they work! :)
It's a Hagen Vision. I believe the large size L02 or something like that. Measurements are 29" x 15" x 36". I absolutely love this cage! I could easily fit two small birds in there and have them be more than comfortable but for Ella it is a wonderful palace to spend her days in while I'm at work.
I think you are doing very good with her. I just keep thinking the seeds are just too small for when she is outside. What about using millet instead? That way you have a little space between your fingers and her beak.
Thanks very much! I'm considering this for when I try handfeeding her outside of her cage where she can get me! As she can fly though I'm trying to figure out the best place where she can't really get away from me. It's hard to tame her outside of the cage when she could just fly away.
I think maybe wrap a Band-Aid or tape around your finger and thumb. Or maybe use a tweezers at first to give yourself a little distance outside the cage.
u should get her a lower cage. A cage that is over you makes her seem like she is higher than you so she can be parrot-protective of her cage and always rearrange her toys in her cage and gawd that is too many toys
Have you thought about using thin gloves when training? I used to do that with my parakeets (they occasionally drew blood as well). I would get them used to my hand being near them. They could bite as hard as they wanted with the gloves, and I would just ignore the behavior.
Just a thought, you could maybe give her the food from a spoon or tweezers or something to prevent biting. Have you taught her to touch a target stick yet?
Thanks for the video. Mine just turned 14 wks old. He only bit me 3x. First, I think I was dancing with him and maybe he got scared. 2nd time was 2x because I was away for 6 hrs and then he called me all that time and was running around cage (that's what my sister said). I tried to hand feed him, but he's still too scared to try anything. I'll try sunflower seed. So you mixed apple, lettuce and tomato? Can't I just chop them into little pieces and give it to him in a bowl/dish? This way I don't have to freeze it. My rainbow loves coming out when I open the cage's door. He can't wait to climb on my finger when I put it in. I try to spend as much time w/ him as possible.
Hi There! Thank you for the advice, I've noticed this corresponding to her attitude as well however the reason we've got her a little higher is because we also have 3 cats. This seemed like the safest place for her. I do bring her cage down and put it on the floor or kitchen table while she's out as I notice she's a much different bird when she can't get above my head. :)
I'm hoping to start target training but right now she is absolutely terrified of the stick! What I've been doing is leaving it on the kitchen table when she's allowed free time so she can get used to it being there and hopefully when she's not so scared of it we can begin target training. lol.
She can be pretty noisy however the nice thing about parrotlets is that they don't have the ability to squawk or screech like larger parrots. Mostly she just sounds like a chirpy outside bird and she quiets right down at night too.
Thank you I appreciate the advice. :) I welcome any input anyone has for me as I've felt at a loss with her for some time now and would really like to have a great relationship with her - maybe even one day teach her a few tricks!.....That's a long way off obviously hahaha!
Thanks! Yes she sassed me for a good 15 minutes before settling down and heading back in to her cage! I think she's permanently stuck in the terrible twos! Hahaha.
This isn’t recommended as the bird needs to get used to your actual hand, not something being over it. It’d be reductive because once you try with the gloves off they’d be scared or aggressive all over again. Also pulling your hand away like the woman was in the video isn’t good either.
i have the same bird toy the rings with the mirror and i put it in my cage my birds loved it even though there not parakeets there cockatiels they fix there feathers whith the mirror and if they can't reach a feather the other bird helps it and fixes it :)
When my little guy but me and didn’t release, I snapped ouch and reflex cause me to gently shake him... But... Now when he begins to nip me, I’ve said ouuuc..and he immediately stops and kisses me. I was just thankful I didn’t accidentally shake him to China when he had originally bit me because he caught me off guard completely. But it sure seemed as though HE was just as surprised. He’ll still randomly attack my foreman every 3 weeks so...but he never gives any rhyme or reason of advance warning, and it saddens me because he must be having some horrible memory of his other owners doing something to him. He’s never actually broken the skin though, so I think he could’ve done so much more damage had he wanted to!
I'm not sure if it was just the camera angle, but it seems like your cage is placed pretty high up. It's better if you put your cage in a lower spot. If she is taller than you than she will begin to feel dominant over you, which could lead to attitude problems later on.
Someone else mentioned this to me, so I'm going to try it. I think for now though I'm going to keep feeding her this way with the target stick in sight so hopefully she'll get used to my hand and it and once she's a little calmer try a treat on the stick. Thanks for the advice! :)
XOrgainized PetzX a little late to answer your question, but it makes your furry friend aware that they've done a good job! you use the clicker exactly when your bird does something well, encouraging them to do it again {:
I'm definitely not an expert on bird training, lol, but feel free to ask me if you have questions with training. I have experience training other animals, so I can always give suggestions! :) But you shouldn't be getting bitten that much.... There are professional bird trainers that sell DVDs about solving behavior problems, have you looked at those?
I have a baby paralet, she runs away, but eventually she sits on my finger but at first she is leary, she does not say a single word or wishtle she does nothing just sits and say nothing.she is a good bird, but i cannot get a peep out of her does not even play with her toys. .any suggestions to make atleast make her peep or a little sound. She just sirs all day even on my shoulder, but s NOTHING at all. iS THIS A LAZY BIRD OR WILL HE COME AROUND??? YOU ANSWER will be appreciated i play with her all day., but still nothing, does noT come out of her cage i have to take him out. any auggestions. .Would PPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH. THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE HER HAPPY IS TO GET HER A REAL PARTNER!! And then you can begin to clicker with her!!!!!She and her partner can be as trusting to you then one alone. You only have to make an harder effort! It can be as rewarding to see the birds sitting together and feed each other then to have them on your finger!
Parrotlets do best when their's just 1 of them, they can be very aggressive and terrtorial to other birds, even birds of their own kind. Liane Graber you should really do your research this bird is a Parrotlet they are better on their own these birds are known to bite off other birds feet, hands and so on! @@milfslayer2105 one.
How to get him in my shirt when he won't let me approach him without scaring him?
Update: We had a lot of success with Ella in future training sessions, her first of which can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/ruRaMsnaRNI/w-d-xo.html
Good job on being patient and resisting the urge to shake off Ella when she bites, as shaking her will make the bite worse. Just keep trying and she'll begin to fully trust you.

Sorry, what I was attempting to say is you have great training abilities and the patients to see it through. Great job!
wow, like having children. hahah u would make a good mom by how patiant u are with ella
I hadn't before getting her either. They only seem to be becoming very popular recently. They are the smallest type of parrot there is.
Hi, I owned a yellow crowned amazon for 10 years, lots of training there. Maybe you should start training her on neutral ground away from her cage, on a separate stand or table, and then move on to the cage. You are doing great, she looks like a happy little bird.
Yes these birds will lunge near their cage very territorial
So patient! That's awesome!!!
Thank you! She gently takes treats now but I still don't trust her if she's not in the cage hahaha. We have an odd relationship! lol
I think using a targeting stick like a unused chop stick might be a better idea.
Good job ella! Her biting you reminds me of my bunny biting me because my fingers smelled like craisins.

I wanted to ask you what model of cage is that? I like the dimensions. Can you please tell me the brand name and the measurements?
Parrotlets are different, he maybe biting bc you’re coming near his cage. The aggression could just be territorial
If I were training my parrotlet to gently take treats from me, I'd wear a pair of gloves at first.

Awwww thanks :) I think that's something my Mom passed down to me and trust me Ella really really tries my patience lol.
I really want a bunny but my mom doesn't want a caged animal is there anything that I could do to show her that rabbits are great animals and pets?
i have the same bird toy the rings with the mirror and i put it in my cage my birds loved it even though there not parakeets there cockatiels they fix there feathers whith the mirror and if they can't reach a feather the other bird helps it and fixes it :)

My dogs name is Ella!! And she soo cute! I love birds!
Wow, she is a vicious little thing. My male parrotlet would be terrified of her. lol But she is a beautiful girl. How's your finger?
I'm not sure if it was just the camera angle, but it seems like your cage is placed pretty high up. It's better if you put your cage in a lower spot. If she is taller than you than she will begin to feel dominant over you, which could lead to attitude problems later on.
hey budget bunny me and my family are getting a parrotlet any tips for getting a new animal in the house and care tips thanks!!!
I'm hoping we get past all of this and it'll just be like a bad dream - those bites hurt! lol
Looks like she's being territorial.
How long did it take to charge the clicker?
I put this video on in front of my bird and she just started chirping back
No kidding! No one else would put up with her crap hahaha!
What treets are there
LOLOLOL she's soooo funny a temper tantrum lololol XD
Someone else mentioned this to me, so I'm going to try it. I think for now though I'm going to keep feeding her this way with the target stick in sight so hopefully she'll get used to my hand and it and once she's a little calmer try a treat on the stick. Thanks for the advice! :)

Hi there, nope Ella is most definitely a girl, she lays eggs on occasion. :)
There is too many toys in the cage. Where is the room to fly around and stretch her wings
Emily's Life This is not a flight cage. I work from home and Ella spent all day care free flying around and doing what she wanted. :)
Oh okay... sorry for criticising you
@@emilyblake3280 I appreciate that, thanks. x
Clip the tip off her beak, nail clipper, just tiny clear sharp tip... watch other video how to...
7:52 ouch!
It is a male i belive

Jeez if I got bit like that I'd sell that thing

i have a suggestion, open the window and let her go fly, and just buy a new hand fed bird, they might never bite u as hard as she did
alterm A if u let her out she’ll die
