BMW & Audi fans, let’s goooo!
Mat’s lining up for our latest drag race in an old Audi RS3, and he wants to see if it has what it takes to bring down a New BMW M240i & Audi S3!
So let’s see how they compare… Starting with the RS3, it’s powered by a 2.5-litre 5 cylinder turbo engine that can put down 340hp and 450Nm. In terms of weight, it tips the scales at 1,575kg.
Next up is the M240i. It’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six engine that’s good for 374hp and 500Nm of torque. It’s a bit heavier than the RS3, though, weighing in at 1,790kg!
Then finally we have the S3, with a 2-litre 4 cylinder that can produce 310hp and 400Nm. It’s also the lightest car here, at 1,558kg.
So what do you think - will the RS3 snatch the win? Or will the BMW walk it? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S RACE!

Exactly that!, CarWow has done drag races as close as the one you are talking about where the time has been the same (because their timing gear isn't F1 sensitive), that finish wasn't even 0.1 seconds!

@@volvos70t51 how close it is is irrelevant, it all depends on how fast they were going. If they were going like 350 km/h then the difference would be less than 0.4 sseconds but because they're much slower than that I can see the difference being 0.3 or 0.4 seconds.

@@purwantiallan5089 they are for emissions tests, volkswagen had massive lawsuit so they invented rev limiters less co2 emissions as tunes are optimal for 3k rpms.
1st gen RS3....😍. You can even hear the ol 5cyl roaring distinctively over everything else.
Yeah before it was over muffled by extra cats and petrol particulate filters, sounds great.
It's slow tho...disappointing car the rs3's that came after lived up to the name unlike this one

For me the best looking RS3 is the 8V facelift. The 8Y is a bit of a downgrade lookswise.

At least the Rs3 8p is the best looker! I am a bit biased though.. One thing I’ve noticed on mine is occasional lack of continuity in launch mode. Just now and again it goes a bit flat, you seem to really need to build up the boost and a quick launch ain’t always a good one. I’d have expected it to beat the S3 like the race a few months back.

What about a drag race between S3 vs BRZ GT300??
The RS3 had a different Airfilter, possibly cost a few horsepower.
Shame the RS3 wasn’t standard, probably lost some power from the intake that it hasn’t been tuned for, also didn’t sound like a standard exhaust or boost valve
The RS3 lost 27bhp on that one.
Yeah I agree, that intake definitely made things worse.
Quite possibly the worst intake you can have especially being that the ambient temperatures are currently high let alone under bonnet temps!

I love every drag race. But only one complaint I have is that production can use better a mic for the obligatory car sound tests in the future videos . The wind noice ruins it and can’t really hear the exhaust of the cqrs

That S3's engine is seriously underrated by Audi/VW. Probably a lot closer to the RS3's power output judging by the rolling race.

It's 380whp. BMW always lie about power output. They basically give whp.
They've lied about the weight I reckon saying just under 1.8 ton, m4 comps only 1725kg
@@neilmorris6719 they didn’t lie. That figure is incorrect. The EU kerbweight which includes a driver and luggage is 1765kg. The 1725kg figure for the M4 is the din kerbweight (no driver, full fluids and 90% fuel). The din kerbweight for the new M240i is 1690kg. Still too heavy but puts it in perspective.

I was waiting for Mat to turn up the boost on the RS3 on the second race because that intake didn't look stock but it never happened.

I believe that era of 5-cyl 2.5 Audi engine has only direct fuel injection, and like the original R8 and 4.2 RS4 engines it is prone to coking up which leads to gradual power loss. In the later engines from about 2016 they went to dual injection which keeps the valves clean. The early cars used to do about low 12 sec standing quarters when they were new, 12.2, 12.3 sort of times and that one probably will do the same again with some walnut blasting. Sounds nice, though.
That Mk1 RS3 sounds the best!
Matt always looks down on the bmw gearbox but it’s the zf8hp. It’s proven to be competitive to many dual clutch gearboxes

wait a second, am i missing stg? that rs3 cannot be .4 seconds slower than the s3 (12.6 and 13.0) as even if they passed the line 100 mph (probably stg close) .4 seconds is close to 17 meters, 4 cars length... it is clear on the finish line rs3 was less than a car's length behind...

@@duxy2k946 it's just shy of £8000 more than the S3. You could literally buy a brand new dacia sandero for that money. The RS3 is also 10 years old. It's a fast car but you could take the difference that you would spend on an s3 and get far more bhp out of it with some change left over.

How bout old m235i and m240i vs new m240i I’ve been asking for this for forever now.
Carwow raced my old RS3 in a similar video last year and it did 12.7 1/4 mile. So the intake loosing a little HP on that RS3. Still looked the best though.
That old Mk1 RS3 is keeping up with the new Audi S3 and the BMW M240i! It's so amazing!

but it has more to do with the injector placement.
Direct injection cars suffer really bad from carbon build up.
Port injection doesn't suffer so bad because fuel gets sprayed directly onto the intake valves and cleans them.
Modern cars these days have best of both worlds. They have direct injection + port injection (Example this 8V S3 in this video)

Because It's not really small, it's not really a coupe, and it's not really a 2-series. It's a 3-series with a slightly shorter body on top of it. The major heavy elements are the engine, transmission and the 4wd gubbins and that doesn't get any lighter when you take a few inches off the length of the car

The interior space is pathetic for the weight and money.
