Lauri, please, just remember that a Sword is the equivalent of an Assault Rifle from 500 years ago. Misusing one can easily lead to serious injury or death. You should always account for the possibility of losing your grip or the blade coming loose from the handle. People have died that way in the past. Never swing a sword with human beings anywhere within 50 meters of the arc of your swing.
on the nd try it looked like in the space when some thing unlach itself from the rest of the main ship like the lunar aterissor when it detaches itself for going home in words : WAS EPIC
As amusing this comment is, however I do not think Finnish people would need any tools to open it. They'll just stare at it until it gets so scared it will just open itself.
Very short explanation why it worked with the first two bottles and not with latters. It is because of the pressure in the bottle. Jaume Serra is cava which is produced in the traditional method and it has pressure almost of a champagne (some high quality cavas might have the same pressure) . Aviva is the cheapest way of producing and pressure similar to other carbonated drinks like sparkling waters or other fizzy drinks. If you had gone with high quality stuff, you would had had even more pressure in the bottle and easier opening. (overly simplified the more there is pressure in the bottle the smaller and more pleasent the sparkliness). Unfortunately (for our wallets) the best quality is achieved with the most expensive way of production. But worth it (subjective opinion). It is true that Cava is produced with method tradicional which is "the right one" for the trick. But most of the high quality sparkling ones hold even more pressure than cheap ones.
BTW I think you should try this again sometime comparing the different types of sparkling wines. And you should get some real Champagne to see does it make difference. And some Champagne producer should sponsor that video. In my opinion... 😁👍🏻
@@Babarudra You can break the neck just as easily on regular wine, but i wouldn't drink that stuff afterwards. The pressurized bottle of sparkling wine almost guarantees all the broken glass is blown out and away from the bottle.
@@Babarudra Yes and no. You can ofcourse break a glass bottle (or any object made out of glass) by force. But that is just a different topic. When you do this traditional opening of a champagne bottle it is called sabrage. And you should use the non sharp edge of a special sabre á champagne as a tool. The physics behind this trick have a lot to do with the huge pressure inside the champagne bottle (more than 600 kilopascals) that is produced during the secondary fermentation in the bottle. When the blade makes a crack when hitting the lip near the seam, the pressure will make it to break really clean and there is not much of a risk of small pieces of glass entering your drink. (Although you should always make sure of it and be careful). On the other hand this way of opening a bottle of any sparkling wine is not good for the drink as the quite violent method makes the carbon dioxide to escape the drink. And if you lose the carbon dioxide quickly there is something missing from the expierience. It is better to tilt the bottle to 45 degree angle, hold it from the bottom and with the other hand hold and rotate the cork while letting the pressure from the bottle to push the cork out. This way you minimize the shaking of the bottle at the moment when cork comes out if you use your thumb to slow the cork down. There shouldn't be that pop sound at all. Just gentle "whisper" when the cork comes of. This is how you preserve the high quality sparkling bubbles and get most out of the delicious experience of your valuable drink. Although I'm not a sparkling wine expert. More in to whiskys, red wines and craft beers so why I'm even here.
It's great how Anni is now talking with the audience too (compared to the early videos I remember). The dialogue between/with the two of you is more than twice as enjoyable as with just one of you.
Next time put the bottle upside-down in a bucket of ice water for five to ten minutes. The colder the neck of the bottle the easier it is to saber it open.
If you want to entice brands to sponsor you, blur the names of the products you use. Because the companies don't need to sponsor you *IF* you are already distributing their label to millions of people very effectively, free of charge.
@@chaos_omega Since you don't need a sharp edge, the usual way is to use the back of the blade. They also make "champagne sabers" which are much shorter for doing this.
Haha! Interesting grip on that swipe for the beer bottle. When timing manipulation comes up later, I think I'll watch this slowed down for that "Just how many bottles did he practice on?" effect. Awesome
True. You knew what was going to happen and did it anyway to show everyone what would happen. That's the important and fun part I always look forward to. Having someone do the experiments and have fun with it.
That was a PERFECT shot on the second bottle Anni. That frame was so small so good job to Lauri for being able to hold it still as well. I got a good laugh out of the full on baseball swing hahaha. Thanks for the content as usual.
The seam in the bottle is, of course, a result of the mold in which it was blown. That mold is a clam shell arrangement. No one would dream of joining two bottle halves together. :)
You could hear the disappointment in Anni's voice when he made a mess with the beer bottle but in his defense I think if the lid had been off of the trash can it would've been a bullseye! lol great video!
You should drink only if it is real champagne or such high pressure; even if it opened, low pressure is not enough to keep all glass pieces off from inside of the bottle.
The first time I opened a bottle with a sword was with a beer bottle. It was before TH-cam, so I only have a couple still shots someone took of me doing it. I had intended to pop the top off, but the whole end of the bottle off like you did with the wine. It wasn't until a few years later that I found out that it was a thing. We were all quite amazed that it worked, and someone promptly took away the machete I did it with. (party pooper!) The blade needs to be at the proper angle when it hits the neck seam, closer to 30 - 45 degrees or so.
3:04 The bottle says: "SshBouu'iP" I loved this sound. If I ever made a computer game with a bottle in it, THIS is the sound it makes whenever you move it in your inventory.
A few things: 1) this is called "sabrage". 2) It is usually done with a shorter sword than you are using, which makes it a bit easier. You can even do it with a kitchen knife. 3) Do not use the sharp side of the blade, it gives you less contact area and tends to just ride up and off of the neck, diffusing the power of the stroke 4) It works much better when the bottle is chilled ahead of time and 5) hold the bottle lower and point it across your field of view so that it's easier to get leverage on it. You want the stroke to almost scissor against the bottle.
How to: unload it, double check it's unloaded. (Do that step again, seriously, firearms are dangerous) Lock the slide back on an empty magazine. Make sure it's unloaded again. Place the barrel on top of the bottle cap, and the frame under the lip of the cap. Using some force, lift the cap up with the frame.
I think that was a pretty good strike on the beer. Good effort. Not sure what you were aiming at lmao. But i'm surprised you didnt pop the neck right off it.
Nice! Maybe if you had the beer bottle in a vise so the base was held firmly the sword would have worked?? How about video about how much pressure can a bottle take before exploding? Could use water or oil maybe to get really high pressure.
It's easier to do if 1) you chill the neck of the bottle in an ice bucket, 2) run the sabre along the seam in the glass, and 3) swing hard and don't stop when you hit the neck - follow-through Search "alton brown champagne sabre" and you'll find a great instructional video
I've only seen this done once, many years ago, and the guy who did it first made a scratch below the thick part of the bottleneck to weaken the glass and used a thickish saber that was bent in order to strike the bottleneck more parallel.
I would say that it's easier to pop the bottles is you keep the angle on the sword the same in the whole motion, that will say, don't swing the sword from left to right (or vice versa), move your arm.
A few tips from someone woh knew something about wine and sekt (german sparkling wine). First: don't do it with the edge of your sword (don't do it with a sword do it with a saber it's the traditional way) Second don't remove the Agraffe (the metal thing over the cork) just move it one to the slot betwean the cork and the big boulge between the neck and the neck of the bottle. It presents the cork from acetently flying out. Thired you can hit the cronecoark frome the bere bottlr away with youre sword I never heraed abut doing it with a glas bit i propose if you do it try using a expensive one. But lastly a complyment you did it realy well and it looks realy good.
You can use a sword, dagger, or knife as a beer bottle opener anyway. Wedge the blade under the cap (where it meets the glass), hit it, and the cap comes off the same as it would with a real bottle opener, and it doesn't break the glass if you do it right.
At the drop zone we used to open beer bottles with a standard dinner/butter knife. Pretty much first time, every time, but use the spine of the blade, and give the bottom of the bottle a gentle knock with the blade, just before the slide.
For my 10th birthday, I was given a bottle of champagne opened like this (it was in France so of course being fed alcohol at such a young age was normal!!), but I really want to go back to the pub where it was and see if my bottle is still there... :D

Brazilians open beer bottles with shotguns, you should try it Lauri. Just search it on youtube, plenty of videos about it but none with a slow motion camera
You are only supposed to open magnum bottles of champagne with a sword, for regular bottles try using a good heavy metal spatula. Also you should remove only the cork without breaking the glass, to achieve this you must hold the bottle by the lower third of the thick ring at the neck, then press the base of the bottle against your arm between shoulder and elbow, this holds the glass together if you mess up the next stage. Put the bottle of wine in your less dominant hand and point it comfortably straight away from you, with your sword in dominant hand hold shoulder to elbow straight out infront of you, pull the sword back towards you as far as you can(elbow joint must be less than 90 deg) with all power coming from your elbow joint push the sword away from you completely parrallel to the bottle, you must swiftly twist your wrist when you feel the blade pass the thick glass rim, this allows the edge to catch the cork well. The reason it is traditionally done with magnums is because there is enough space to grip the neck with three fingers and thumb, with regulars you must use two fingers and thumb or risk not having the third next time, also magnums will lie across your forearm but you must bridge regulars between your two finger grip and your upper arm.
Slomoguys should do this with much better slomo cameras but good video idea and a great video :), It is a shame that the good cameras are ridiculously expensive.
*GREAT INFORMATION!* when I can't find my corkscrew I'll just open the samurai sword drawer in the kitchen! This explains why you don't see any unopened bottles of champagne in Japan. Can I open champagne with a sword fish? I'm going to try, just for the halibut.
Have you guys heard of a krakatoa tube? or a a bleve explosion? Bleve (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion). Take a glass tube and seal some water in it, then heat it and back far away. You get a huge explosion. If you could catch it on high speed it might be pretty cool. Since you have that nice Chronos high speed camera you might be able to do it. Seen a lot of your videos and a lot of explosions but i don't think i've ever seen that type of a boom on super high speed.
"This video is not sponsored by any sparkling wine company." "...But it COULD be." Yes, I'm sure the Veuve Clicquot really wants to be able to say "As used by two mad Finns with a sword." :-)
Two highlights for me. 5:14 that tiny sliver of glass just below the open part of the neck. and the end when Anni say Lauri at the end in the same tone of voice I use on my husband when he does something without thinking it through. Mind you I think my husband is a genius but he often doesn't pay attention or is too lost in thinking.
Jesus! Lauri almost got Anni with the sword! But the face she made was funny! LMAO Maybe you have to shake the wine and beer up a little to get the pressure higher in the bottle.?
the beer bottle should be placed in a fixed clamp at an angle to the swing. that will make it easier to set the camera up and give you a similar angle as you had when doing the champagne bottles. Additionally, try to make your point of connection with the rim as flat an angle as possible so that you don't skip off the lip so easily.
again, but with super-slomo just on the glass separation moment. To see how it cracks off - symetrically, with splinters or clean. Maybe you need a holder for the bottle :)
Next time try to open sparkling wine bottle with gas torch by heating bottom.. :D One version with removed metal safety clip - it should shoot out cap (will be great in slow motion to calculate speed and distance) and second version without removed safety clip - bottle as it is (theoretically could explode if pressure rise enough).. :D

7:46 The face of "I think this is really good idea"
Lauri: I think this is very good idea.
Me: I think you're about to make a faakin' mess.
great video. maybe you can make a video with your high speed camera that is showing cleaning laser at work.
again, but with super-slomo just on the glass separation moment. To see how it cracks off - symetrically, with splinters or clean. Maybe you need a holder for the bottle :)
Lauri did an oopsie.
.25 speed @ 4:33 Sounds like the chipmunks still? Nice vid!😊
