Flamboyant as he is, Shadow Kanji touched on an important issue you rarely see handled in media. Not homosexuality, rather masculinity and expectations on men. I've seen too many men who put up tough facades, decry anything remotely feminine or gay because they're afraid indulging in those interests would make them shadow kanji - some silly, weird, perverted dude who everyone laughs at. And sad part is society often treats them like that if they DO engage in interests not deemed masculine. "Oh, that's boy in sewing class? Must be gay! And that one likes to wear pink? He must be really weak and a crybaby! And dude over there cried at the movie! What a wuss!". It's a toxic as hell mindset. Like Kanji said it ultimately had nothing to do with his sexuality, more-so that society tends to treat men who fall outside the norm as gay, so the two issues end up overlapping despite in reality having nothing to do with each other. As for his sexuality, I'm personally happy it's left up in the air. It's not what matters, and as someone who's still not sure about their own sexual identity I appreciate a character who are in that same ambiguous spot. Some of us don't want to cling to a label, we'd rather just be who we are and let life take us where it leads us.
Yeah it's weird how everyone focuses on the aspect of him being gay, to me the most powerful line that he says is What does it mean to be a guy? What does it mean to be manly? Because really embodies almost all his points
the truth thanks to those same labels, there is a lot of maleness. because there are those who believe that women should be cooking and must be tightly raised and with children. And I say, whoever wants to, if you are a man and you like to sew, do it. If you want to be a police officer and you are a woman, do it. for no one says that it is "feminine" and that it is "masculine". Since it is not good to live on labels. But how society will not change. People will continue to live in hell. It is one of the reasons why, as a woman, I quit sewing.
True enough. I’m a guy that enjoys gardening and crafts yet many people have always made fun of me for that. Like, what the hell is wrong with liking flowers? It’s a part of biology! What’s wrong with liking to decorate baskets or sewing a quilt? I could really use one to choke the life out of you.
Basically, typical stereotypes (why did we even invent them I have no idea). Now because of these society thinks one precise thing about something and when it doesn't go as they want they go for the option that you're different and weird. So, what do they do? Accept for who you are? Nuh-uh. They think of you as a joke of nature and someone that isn't something.
Tyrique Coleman Wait hold on so what was kanji's shadow saying? That chicks were basically giving him a hard time about his personal hobbies and likes so he should probably be homosexual?
Chad Saturday He's a guy with "girly" hobbies which girls reject and call him gay for and guys don't really understand. This is why he overcompensates by being rough to the point that guys are scared of him (like the dudes who commented about him at school) but in reality, he doesn't really understand what being a guy is supposed to be like. So both genders reject him. He just seeks acceptance of who he is, a guy who likes art and sewing. People often misinterpret this as a sign of homosexuality which is what Kanji mistakes as something he has but all he wants is to expose himself and be accepted (which is why the shadow's in his undergarments"
Kanji is bisexual and his feeling of girls calling him queer makes him insecure with his masculinity this persona is mostly about that but you can not also deny the fact that this dungeon heavily implies he himself has at least some homosexual feelings. If you do you are blatantly ignoring facts
@@user-mv3xz1ki2c yes, the bathhouse has heavily gay overtones. _That's the joke._ Kanji has to hide facets of his personality *because society deems that only gay men would like flowers and knitting.* Not only did the joke fly over your head it boomeranged back and hit you in the face.
Shadow kanji did show the effect of toxic masculinity. He was traumatised by the girl talking behind his back for his sewing hobby. Thus his subconscious ponder if a man will accept him. Ppl often overlook this and focus on gay symbolism of him while kanji himself still attracted to naoto knowing her real gender.
I think it's less about sexuality and more about his struggle with identity what is manly and showing his feminine side, being afraid that everyone will not accept it, I still think he is bisexual though even if in game there is no clear explanation
+Liam Canney I think it has nothing to do with sexuality at all, I think it's more just him being accepted by anyone, anywhere. He's a guy who's into what's considered feminine activities, but he himself doesn't like acting that way. This way, he doesn't really fit in with the girls because they called him weird and stuff like that. He fits in slightly better with guys, but because of his tough guy attitude, he doesn't really fit in anywhere. Therefore, he wants to be accepted by any person, male or female. Not necessarily in a sexual way.

f45411 First of all you sound like a narrow minded person, just because you believe that someone should act one way doesn't mean that they will. Second you seem to fail to understand that he was being bullied by the girls he know, and naturally that would disencourage him to socialise with more girls, and create some sort of dislike to them which is his Shadow.
He was still attracted to Naoto even after it was revealed she was pretending to be a guy, but as Kanji stated, he was well aware of his sexual identity but he was worried about being judged by his peers.
The best thing about the Shadows is how they take a concept the populace would find negative, and have the characters turn them into positives. Like here, when Kanji's Shadow says "Men are MUCH better..." in a menacing way, there shouldn't be anything wrong with that statement, but it's dressed up to make it seem like it is.
As someone who's always been terrified of what others think of me, and not just in terms of sexuality, I can relate with Kanji quite a lot. We're all scared of how other's perceive our interests, some girls have more male orientated interests but are afraid of revealing them to others due to some rather... hurtful labels. The same can be said of boy's and rumors of them being gay, or wusses, so on and so forth It's about accepting yourself in the end, but as Kanji's social link shows, even after facing all those ugly doubts and insecurities it's still hard to come to terms with them. Harry Potter no way, P2 is completely different, also the random encounter may get annoying, personally its only for the characters and story, so try to play it on easy, but never play P1, ever.
"At last, I've penetrated the facility!" I absolutely love how Shadow Kanji delivered that one line in particular also love the "MEN ONLY!!" detail lol
@@barbatosdiablosrex Except he isnt gay. And everyone who is mature would get the fact that he isn't gay. Which is the deepest part of this game because multiple people perceived him to be so which led to Kanji's confusion creating this Shadow. Everyone in the comment's section sees him that way, they are apart of the problem.
19:53 his persona looks like Summoned Skull from Yu-gi-oh and when I was playing as him, he was using electrical attacks just like Yugi when he was using Summoned Skull
Persona 4 is definitely one of the best games on both the PS2 and Vita, and I'm glad they gave it a re-release. It's thought-provoking and challenging. You WILL die (granted, sometimes to cheap shots but that comes with being a SMT series game), but it never makes you want to stop playing because the story and combat are both so engaging. It's unfortunate that the randomly-generated maps to explore in are average at best, nothing compared to the genius that was Nocturne's (SMT3) dungeons. Still, I would recommend this game to ANYONE, gamers and non-gamers, whether they enjoy JRPGS and turn-based combat or not.
I can kinda relate though. I'm afraid of being judged by people based on my personality. I like to paint , I'm quite reserve around people other than my group and some. I always think I'm so different than most guys in my class
His attraction to Naoto is something I'd put down to the relationship that develops over time, mostly from seeing how it's dealt with the anime: when they first meet and Naoto says that she finds him "interesting," Kanji takes that as Naoto (in disguise) is possibly attracted to him and he is relieved at having possibly found another gay man in Inaba, but after learning Naoto's a girl, it may be possible the feelings he has for her are more personal than just a basic attraction towards gender Kanji DOES accept that his sexual preference is towards men, but from the relationship he and Naoto develop in the end by comparison to his relationships with the other girls, I'm guessing that he's not "completely" bisexual, but he does care about her on a close emotional level ... In spite of all that, though, I still ship them XD
***** The exact scene leaves it very ambiguous who he found attractive to the point of nosebleed. It could've easily be either the girls in bikini, or the guys only in shorts who are wet as well, or even both. Not helped in extra dialogue in Golden where he has some...interesting comments should MC talk to him in a dungeon while he (MC) is wearing the Towel costume.
Stanislaw Krawczyk to more right on what he means on a “gay voice” is where male’s voice has a large stereotypical feeling of feminine taste behind their words.
The Guy Shadows Kanji Summons: Exists Chie and Yukiko: *PERSONA!* Teddie: “Not you guys too!” Chie: “I’m sorry but this guy really bugs..” Yukiko:”Yeah..”
I absolutely love how even after what happened here and Kanji sorts out his inner demons, excessively homosexual Shadow Kanji is pretty much a recurring joke regardless. It gets bought up more than the other characters, and I think subsequent appearances of Shadow Kanji in the spinoffs have the same over-the-top personality even when they don't have any reason to do so.
TsukiKageTora I suppose that the thing is that all of this is going on the Midnight Channel, and casual sitizens of Inaba can watch it with straight face and no particular questions. Which is really weird, if you ask me. Imagine that you found a channel, on which a gay man searches for his love in sauna, and then suddenly aforementioned gay man turns all Megazord and fights a group of teens with spiritual projections.
I don't think this matters, but I don't read Kanji as being gay or bisexual. Kanji's shadow is struggling with his traditionally feminine interests, like knitting and liking cute things. His meeting with Naoto makes him automatically attracted, which is why he goes haywire - it's the first time he's attracted to someone, and he thinks Naoto is a man. This makes him confused and fearful that he is, until he learns from his shadow battle it doesn't matter what he is, just that he should accept himself. That's the major takeaway of Kanji. Although I personally don't think he is gay or bisexual, what matters is being able to accept yourself for who you are regardless of how you or the world labels yourself.
From what I know and understand of the game, this is the most sensible explanation. A guy who has interests that don't exactly fit with the normal perception of his age and gender and his subconscious mind internalizing it, how he's worried society would see him for having even a slight deviance from the common idea of 'this is a man', and what it might really mean for him as a person. If I recall correctly, it was also just him and his mom. So him taking up sewing and knitting are natural extensions of that situation. He's helping his mom and likes doing it so there's nothing wrong. Even though society at the time might act like the "lack of a strong male influence" led to him being to be different. Then in walks a girl who pretends to be a guy and, even though he thinks she's a "fellow male", he likes her. Maybe more than likes her. Real screwball to his already tense subconscious that's judging him like he thinks society would. Though there's nothing wrong with liking cute things, regardless of gender or age. It's just that our own individual tastes would change what cute applies to. What's typecast as 'cutesy' or 'cute to women' might be a generalization but... Yeah, parental influence does have influence there. And even with a dad in the picture, Kanji might be interested anyway. He likes art and cuteness? So what? If it's not manly to have an interest in something more than fighting, best get rid of the stereotype. But it doesn't change that what does matter is that he should be willing to accept himself and the fact that yes, he likes those things, they do not detract from his "man cred", he doesn't have to explain a thing about it. And if anyone has a problem with it, too damn bad. I personally think it's really manly if you can cook, clean, and sew. Not to mention, it shows potential romantic partners that you're appealing in more ways and can support them when they need it. Though it doesn't really help that his peers, also teens who are also figuring themselves and sociocultural and gender roles out, don't really know or accept much about themselves either.
@@anubis7457 Not necessarily? He says specifically "it aint about guys or chicks" in reference to the shadows words about girls being scary and preferring men. That's not him saying he'd date guys or girls, just him saying it's not about who it is provided they accept him (not necessarily in a sexual or romantic way)
This feels so dumbed down compared to the original P4 version. In the original none of them had any weaknesses and Nice Guy would spam Heat Riser/Tarukaja on the other 2 whenever possible. Here it looks like Shadow Kanji uses status moves and his normal attack mostly (aka his least threatening moves) while Nice Guy casts only single stat buffs and actually wastes turns attacking :( In short they nerfed the boss's attacks AND made him easier to kill. This fight looks really easy now compared to the original P4 which is kinda sad because I liked the challenge :/
TheBlackknight720 yup. When I first started playing Persona 4, I got rekt SO BAD by Shadow Kanji. Like seriously, it's one of the most annoying boss fight ever. But seeing the P4G, it's easy af. You can literally beat it even being underleveled

its actually anime reference that the guy members inflicted with poison. while the girls inflicted by rage....you need watch the animation for that..^^
Kanjis shadow was ahead of its time but even still his more feminine side was never mentioned again and he never really got around to accepting it which bothered me a little. He would’ve secretly loved ru paul’s drag race.
Fun fact: as if this couldn’t be any more gay, his boss form is covered in roses, which while in many cultures represents romance, in Japan represents homosexuality
Shadow Kanji puts on a show of being as gay as possible, to try and be more acceptable to Kanji, because it manifested from fear of rejection. The fight isn't simply resolved by Kanji accepting that fear, he knocks some sense into his other self to make his shadow accept itself.
He's not gay, but scared of being seen as gay for liking non-manly things. It's a common occurrence and I can relate to it. I can't act tough as him and look up to the guy for accepting who he is. A man who can accept his true nature of being a kind gentle fellow.

no way, P2 is completely different, also the random encounter may get annoying, personally its only for the characters and story, so try to play it on easy, but never play P1, ever.
The Bright Cube P1 is more grindier than P2 and i love P2 EP
I just love Yukiko's quote, "I am thou!" Very poetic.
And it's so satisfying to me when she says, "I am thou..... *there!* "
The Emperor she's says I am now there!
Katie Sandow no she doesnt
Katie Sandow I thought so too, before hearing the truth
THERE!
"At last, I've penetrated the facility!"
I absolutely love how Shadow Kanji delivered that one line in particular
also love the "MEN ONLY!!" detail lol
I'm Kanji Tatsumi and I enjoy NAKED MEN. (Oh yeah~)
-You Guys, everyone at school makes fun of me because i like
-WOMEN
It’s still symbolic
AAAAAAAH!
You know because he’s gay
Ya get it
Michael Pagnotta Sixty Nine like XD
@@barbatosdiablosrex Except he isnt gay. And everyone who is mature would get the fact that he isn't gay.
Which is the deepest part of this game because multiple people perceived him to be so which led to Kanji's confusion creating this Shadow. Everyone in the comment's section sees him that way, they are apart of the problem.
Rex4Smash I know that it’s a joke from the comic dub
As a matter of fact I love Kanji he is the best character and a true man
good lord how many times have I seen this cutscene between Kanji and shadow Kanji because of how HARD THIS FIGHT WAS IN THE ORIGINAL
Because heat riser is kinda endgame buff but nice guy use that, in golden it was rebalancing to just tarukaja rakukaja
19:53 his persona looks like Summoned Skull from Yu-gi-oh and when I was playing as him, he was using electrical attacks just like Yugi when he was using Summoned Skull
Level: Coming out of the closet
Difficulty: H A R D ;)
I wonder how troy baker delivered these lines
+Raptor Jesus Also 3:32 one of Kanji's best lines. He sounds so legit angry. Props to his voice actor.
Raptor Jesus Persona 5 has way more bullshit in my opinion, but is a much more balanced game with it's tones
The first time i played Persona 4 about 3 years ago, and when i got to this boss, i was like, "What the f**k?"
What was your reaction to Rise?
And then you got to Rise's Shadow and saw every last inch of weirdness..... ;)
@@anthonymurano8494 That thing was a trauma for the poor guy for sure
@@anthonymurano8494 Nah, shadow Kanji can't be topped lol. Rise was definitely creeping me out but Kanji was on levels I didn't know was possible.
I can kinda relate though. I'm afraid of being judged by people based on my personality. I like to paint , I'm quite reserve around people other than my group and some. I always think I'm so different than most guys in my class
I feel that guy from a year ago
So he's bisexual then?
I mean he is still crushing hard on Naoto.o.o;
Most likely.
His attraction to Naoto is something I'd put down to the relationship that develops over time, mostly from seeing how it's dealt with the anime: when they first meet and Naoto says that she finds him "interesting," Kanji takes that as Naoto (in disguise) is possibly attracted to him and he is relieved at having possibly found another gay man in Inaba, but after learning Naoto's a girl, it may be possible the feelings he has for her are more personal than just a basic attraction towards gender
Kanji DOES accept that his sexual preference is towards men, but from the relationship he and Naoto develop in the end by comparison to his relationships with the other girls, I'm guessing that he's not "completely" bisexual, but he does care about her on a close emotional level
...
In spite of all that, though, I still ship them XD
Ponder von Lampgurgle Personally I think he's just Naotosexual
zaqareemalcolm Aren't we all a little Naotosexual? X3
***** The exact scene leaves it very ambiguous who he found attractive to the point of nosebleed. It could've easily be either the girls in bikini, or the guys only in shorts who are wet as well, or even both. Not helped in extra dialogue in Golden where he has some...interesting comments should MC talk to him in a dungeon while he (MC) is wearing the Towel costume.
i just find shadow Kanji freaking hilarious! Troy Baker really knows how to pull of a gay voice.
What in the actual fuck is a gay voice
Vito800 A sterotype.
Stanislaw Krawczyk But funny nevertheless
Wait, that's Troy Baker? Oh my fucking god. Shadow Kanji is now 900 times more hilarious.
Stanislaw Krawczyk to more right on what he means on a “gay voice” is where male’s voice has a large stereotypical feeling of feminine taste behind their words.
(s)kanji: you want this
me:no i do not
Me on the other hand: Fuck YES
Me: no thanks ask yosuke
i dont mind to be gay for kanji
Shadow Kanji: Exists
Yu and Yosuke: *PERSONA!*
Chie: Whoa guys hold on a minute!
Yosuke: No! I can’t take another second of this place!
The Guy Shadows Kanji Summons: Exists
Chie and Yukiko: *PERSONA!*
Teddie: “Not you guys too!”
Chie: “I’m sorry but this guy really bugs..”
Yukiko:”Yeah..”
"How dare you say that shit with my face!"
Oh Kanji
I absolutely love how even after what happened here and Kanji sorts out his inner demons, excessively homosexual Shadow Kanji is pretty much a recurring joke regardless. It gets bought up more than the other characters, and I think subsequent appearances of Shadow Kanji in the spinoffs have the same over-the-top personality even when they don't have any reason to do so.
do they ever question all this weird shit
+Squid Police it's japan, they probaly think it just a typical podcast.
Space Police its just a normal weekend for them
Polandgod 75 lol you do realize that this is a work of fiction so of course no one would "question" it if perhaps it wasn't written lol XD
And thinking Naoto was a guy interested in him likely added to the insecurity
yeah ok but who asked tho
He literally says he doesn't care if his partner is a man or woman, just that they accept him. That's bi, my guy.
@@anubis7457 Not necessarily? He says specifically "it aint about guys or chicks" in reference to the shadows words about girls being scary and preferring men.
That's not him saying he'd date guys or girls, just him saying it's not about who it is provided they accept him (not necessarily in a sexual or romantic way)
i just defeated hiM! he's the reason why i took a 11 month break from the game but just came back to it today and owned him after grinding to level 24
This feels so dumbed down compared to the original P4 version. In the original none of them had any weaknesses and Nice Guy would spam Heat Riser/Tarukaja on the other 2 whenever possible. Here it looks like Shadow Kanji uses status moves and his normal attack mostly (aka his least threatening moves) while Nice Guy casts only single stat buffs and actually wastes turns attacking :(
In short they nerfed the boss's attacks AND made him easier to kill.
Right ! When I play P4G it was easy to kill'em. I recently bough p4 on ps3, and ahah it was a really difficult fight but got it after like 20 minutes lol
TheBlackknight720 I feel you. Fighting Kanji in P4 is a real pain in the ass.
"bear" naked... ... LMAO
Ripped Teddie suit.
I like how everyone attacks Nice Guy and Tough Guy but for me all I had to do was attack Shadow Kanji and just nullify his stat bonuses. I think I was a bit too over leveled for that boss fight...it wasn't even a challenge
congrats?
Level 25 is recommended level.
If you were 5 levels above that you were way over leveled.
@@spencerbowden2979I beat him with my party at lv 15-20 and it only took me 3 tries and a bunch of medicine
Troy Baker voices the most masculine, alpha male roles ever. To hear him do the opposite is quite an interesting experience
Kanji just fucking DECKED his Shadow. Way to be as badass as ever, big guy.
I think I know why Yuki-chan was mad as heck. Someone stole her sweetroll :)
In the anime, either nice guy or tough guy (I am unsure which) said that yukiko does not look good in red
Kanji is my favourite male P4 charactet
its actually anime reference that the guy members inflicted with poison. while the girls inflicted by rage....you need watch the animation for that..^^
Check that, reverse it.

Damn, Troy Baker knocked it out of the park for this particular performance…
Kanjis shadow was ahead of its time but even still his more feminine side was never mentioned again and he never really got around to accepting it which bothered me a little. He would’ve secretly loved ru paul’s drag race.
Did you play through Kanji's Sccial Link?
wow! Golden's "very hard" is easier than ps2's "normal" version.
They nerfed tough guy and nice guy, that's why you could keep them grounded.
Yeah man, I feel it really easy in hard difficulty if you understand the game and it grind less in golden version.
Fun fact: as if this couldn’t be any more gay, his boss form is covered in roses, which while in many cultures represents romance, in Japan represents homosexuality
sauce please
He isn’t gay, he said so himself.
Bara = rose in Japanese.
Does that mean James is gay?
Shadow Kanji puts on a show of being as gay as possible, to try and be more acceptable to Kanji, because it manifested from fear of rejection. The fight isn't simply resolved by Kanji accepting that fear, he knocks some sense into his other self to make his shadow accept itself.
My favorite awakening just because of how emotional it all is
penetrated the facility

Troy Baker did a great job as Kanji Tatsumi!
He's not gay, but scared of being seen as gay for liking non-manly things. It's a common occurrence and I can relate to it. I can't act tough as him and look up to the guy for accepting who he is. A man who can accept his true nature of being a kind gentle fellow.
Tfw being gay has nothing to do with being feminine. Masculine gay men are the majority hiding in plain sight.
he’s likely gay or bisexual stop erasing lgbt characters
@@redd5505 Stop labeling everything as lgtb and respect others opinions. To my eyes is hinted that Kanji could be bi, is clear that he has a lot of interest on the girls and has a crush on Naoto but sometimes he blushes and feels confortable in certain questionable situations with the guys too.

I can only imagine Troy Baker having the time of his life.
Did anyone else notice that whenever Kanji poisoned a character it was Protag and Yosuke, but whenever he raged someone it was Chie or Yukiko...

That's because the poison ONLY affects males and the rage ONLY affects females
