Am I the only who thinks that the real Major World Premiere is Mildred bathing and staying during all the video? Joking apart, thank you once more Dave for these wonderful discoveries. The second subject of the first movement is really something to die for.

My copy arrived yesterday. It’s sublime. If Ola Rudner hadn’t discovered it, the world would have been a poorer place. If you, DH, hadn’t brought it to my attention, my world would have remained a poorer place. I can’t thank you enough for all the great composers and wonderful works you’ve introduced me to that I would never have discovered alone.

That sounds really exciting. Will definitely give it a listen. Heard his requiem a while back, which I really enjoyed.

Having had the knockout pleasure of performing one of the major supporting roles in Suppé´s operetta "Boccaccio" half of the joy apart from being on stage, was listening to Suppé´s close to genious way of incorporating more or less hidden quotes or rephprasings of other major composers works. As well as - for this Italian setting - leaning masterly on bel canto idioms in his ensembles. After all Suppé took good advice from Donizetti himself when playing violin under his baton in Vienna in the early 1840´s.

It's got delightful music. Even if I can't figure out the plot. Somebody is up in a tree at one point, and I was completely confused.
Boccaccio was even done at the Met.

Just listened. Nice piece - very Viennese and you can definitely hear the influence of Schubert

Thanks for the tip on this wonderful disk. I used it as my morning walk-the-dog soundtrack. The "symphony" is no masterpiece, but utterly delightful - so fresh and fun. This would make a great addition to the community orchestra repertoire. I still remember the shock when I first heard his Requiem - von Suppe was no composer of only light works, but when he wanted could really compose more serious music of quality.

I was just about to write that the (master)piece by Suppe that surprised and delighted me most was exactly his wondrous songful "Requiem". Some years have passed since my first introduction to it, and the impression has never faded! Alas, how many people even know that the "light" Suppe left something this beautiful and inspiring to the posterity?..
Based on own impressions and Dave's recommendations, I am most certainly seeking out the "Symphonic Fantasy". Those kinds of finds justify the time-consuming and often disappointing search!

I'm eager for this sort of worthy discoveries that refresh the record industry. Beethoven, Mahler, Bruckner et al be damned!

Well done for championing the byways of the standard repertoire. It's refreshing amongst the seemingly endless also ran Bruckner and Mahler cycles, that something like this gets a well deserved airing. It always pays to keep your ears open - I recently found in a local charity shop a recording of something called 'Natursymphonie' by a composer I'd never heard of, Siegmund von Hausegger. And what a cracking piece of music it is (I far prefer listening to it than Strauss' Alpine Symphony, which it predates by a few years). I subsequently discovered it was reviewed by Classics Today. Anyway, keep up the good work!

von Hausseger made the first recording of the Bruckner 9th. Ca. 1938. It still sounds splendid.

Good to see Mildred staying for the duration of the entire video. She's evidently a Suppé devotee.

Suppe sounds interesting, Dave. I'm also hoping you will soon do a review of the Enescu Symphonies by Macelaru and the French National Orchestra. I haven't got any of Enescu symphonies in my music library as yet. I guess waiting for THE Reference recording of the Symphonies.

I'm among the few who enjoys Suppe's overtures more than Rossini's.

That went straight to the wish list. Mind you, I am not that surprised by the "other" side of Von Suppé, because (decades ago now) I got a recording of his stunning requiem.
Anecdote: that CD would not play on any of my players (four at the time). Its copy protection system protected it from even being heard. However, once I made a copy of it on the computer (yep...), that played fine. Talk about record company stupidity! And it wasn't even Decca! (*)
    (*) it was EMI

Thank you for this review. There was a time when lively, enjoyable tunes were standard concert fare. Suppe is an example. Good to hear him praised. He may not be Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven, but he's fun to listen to. And writing something people really like is no mean feat.

Thanks for the recommendation. It's hard to know with Naxos which releases are interesting or not. They even gave this one, with World Premiere recordings, one of their generic covers instead of the full art ones they use for their major releases.
They didn't even write World Premiere on the front!
