      Well, atheists seem like the ones who go look for information and answer in the most divers places. So it shouldn't be surprising. But anything that brings people together is a good. ;-)

    I don't wanna sound mean but... most of the Christian Movies, at least the ones that I heard and watched, that are bad are Protestant...

    • @Ceylin_Kurtbogan
      @Ceylin_Kurtbogan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah I don't want to sound like jackass but...even in superficial ways, Catholicism is so much cooler than Protestantism. xD And the movies about them(us) are generally so much more interesting. It might have something to do with the 2000 years old ecclesiastical history and traditions. (And beautiful art, music and a long list of content. Prot movies lack all of those, especially the content thing. This is why they all go and make it about inner journey of some random dude or dudette struggling with modern world etc etc which becomes quite cheesy and boring sometimes).

      That is partly because Protestantism embraces mostly truth hence heavy opposition from fallen cosmic beings and Christan haters which influences lower budgets, etc.

    This is probably the first time I actually wanted to watch the whole discussion multiple times (Though that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I am Catholic and that I watched The Hollywood Reporter 2017 round-table discussions for actors and producers as they talked about Silence which by the way is the most mature and fun thing to hear from Andrew Garfield).

    You guys made me feel ancient when talking about 'The Mission'. I saw that in a theater with full Dolby Sound. When you get The Mission movie, maybe find someone that has 4D with full HD sound to view. I don't recommend viewing on a tablet or 720 TV. That would be like running a formula 1 race car on a tin lizzy track.

      mark luis Actually it's fictional but only Father Ferreira, Rodrigues and Garrpe, and obviously the other characters. The setting and punishments and so forth are real, not that you didnt know that :)

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is based on a book that is based on a TRUE story.
    Cristóvão Ferreira (c. 1580-1650) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary who famously committed apostasy after being tortured in the anti-Christian purges of Japan. Born around 1580, in Torres Vedras, Portugal, Ferreira was sent to Asia, where he was a missionary in Japan from 1609 to 1633, becoming the head Jesuit under the oppression of the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1633, Ferreira was captured and renounced Christianity after being tortured for five hours. He became the most famous of the "fallen priests" and changed his name to Sawano Chūan (Japanese: 沢野忠庵). He registered at a Buddhist temple in accordance with Japanese law, and called himself "a member of the Zen sect", but his own publications attest that he adopted a philosophy of natural law. He died in Nagasaki in 1650.[3] Just before his death he supposedly recanted, was tortured and died as a martyr. Wikipedia.
    The Crossfixes you see in the water was a way of torture. They would set them up in low tide, but in high tide they would not drown. Instead they were left for days and their skin just peeled off, skinned alive. Unthinkable way of torture.

    Also, "The Mission" is a really great film that the rest of you who haven't seen it will like. It's one of my favorites. Very well done, also can't beat the acting from Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons either.
    And if you ever get a chance "For Greater Glory" is a pretty good film with some surprisingly notable actors like Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, and Peter O'Toole. It's about the Cristada (Cristero War) in Mexico during the 1920s when the government persecuted the Church. You also get a glimpse of the portrayal of a newly canonized saint, St. Jose Sanchez del Rio who was martyred at 14 years old. It definitely has that independent feel to it as a film, but it really is a pretty good film for the story alone.

    Any chance y'all be looking at Hacksaw Ridge? It hit theaters the first week of November, it's a War/Faith film starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Mel Gibson (The Passion of the Christ). I would say that this is a Christian movie done right and Martin Scorsese's Silence seems to be going in that direction.

    Don't worry guys Scorsese isn't going to mess this up this has been his passion project for 28 years,from the subject of forgivness in his film Mean Streets to hope in Taxi Driver and humility and trust in the film the film Raging Bull a devout Catholic director like Martin Scorsese( www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/film/features/20579-the-twisty-spirituality-of-martin-scorcese#comments )is going to make Silence his masterwork.

    Here's what you need to do before you see Silence...watch The Mission, which you mentioned, and Black Robe - a Canadian film you've probably never heard of. Both films are about Jesuit missionaries amoung the savages. Both films are beautiful and deeply intense explorations of faith and leave you wondering who the real savages are. Seems like Silence falls into this cinematic tradition. Check them out.

      I've not seen Mary's Land. What was that one about?

    • @Eleison23
      @Eleison23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mary's Land is about the unapproved alleged apparition of Medjugorge. Catholics should not be exposed to materials which take for granted the veracity of these alleged apparitions.

    • @lorisa97
      @lorisa97 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Earl yes indeed Mary's Land is about the Medjugorje apparitions, but at the end they say that they are yet to be approved by the Vatican, even though that's not why I would like a review on the movie, it is because of the stories of conversion of the people in the movie.
      But yeah, Medjugorje is yet to be approved so I wouldn't like a fellow Catholic to believe otherwise, my apologies for the confusion.

    • @lorisa97
      @lorisa97 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timothy Rex Mary's Land, besides the Medjugorje apparitions, is also about all these people who open their hearts to God because of the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

    Just one minor correction: at around 8:35 you said that Andrew Garfield's character goes to "Imperial Japan" when the word you should have used was "Feudal Japan." I know this sounds petty, but I believe it's important. During the 1600s, when this film takes place, Japan was a feudal society ruled by a military government that closed its borders and cut off its people from all contact with the outside world. That's why Christianity was outlawed. Japan didn't give way to westerm imperialism until the late 1860s when the military government (called the 'Shoganate') was abolished and the Emporor was put back in power. Sorry if I'm sounding picky, just trying to help!
    Great review otherwise! I'm stoked on this movie too and I really enjoyed hearing all your thoughts on it.

    This movie looks really good and I was intending to go see it until I saw Liam Neeson in it. I was a big fan of Liam Neeson (or Aslan) until he lent his voice to a video by Amnesty Ireland where he called for legalisation of abortion in Ireland. We knew we'd come up against liberal celebs in Ireland in this battle but it broke so many of our hearts when Liam Neeson joined the fight to bring abortion to Ireland. I just can't support any film of his now after this. I hope you guys at NCG can appreciate this, I just thought you ought to know who this man really is.

    ‘Silence’ is Scorsese at his worst: Still, when you’re making a Christian epic and the best thing about it is the guy playing the inquisitor, you have a serious problem. As it stands, “Silence” feels like a film about two rival forms of primitive dogmatism, in which neither side quite realizes that they both might be wrong. The film doesn’t seem remotely mystical, but earthbound. The whole movie is reminiscent of the prayer that the King utters in “Hamlet,” which never takes wing but stays leaden on the ground.

    Hey Guys!! Love your reviews. Please let us know what you think of the actual movie or the book.
    Marty S. the director has been known to make controversial spiritual movies "The Last Temptation of Christ" is an example of a critically praised movie that is considered morally offensive by the Church. He directed that one and in directing this one he's trying hard to get back on Church's good side. One thing the trailer does not showcase as much as it should is that (spoiler for the novel but not really as its mentioned on most Catholic or Christian review sites) Silence is a novel that is about Apostasy and Denouncing the Faith. I admire the acting and the quality of the trailer as it completely sold me on the film (I have a great devotion to martyers and missionary saints) then after reading a little bit more into it, I'm skeptical since its Marty S dealing with spirtuality and Catholic faith again and it deals with Apostasy. I still will probably see it to review it and I look forward to y'alls review on book and/or film. Just wondering what yall might think of the controversy...

    This was a very important moment in Japanese history. Till this day, Christianity is barely 1% to 2% of the entire population. Had Japan converted into Christianity, we would have ended up like the Philippines, the most Christian country in Asia and also the most dangerous, primitive, crime-ridden, high teen pregnancy rate country in Asia. Or we would have ended up like any Central or South American country, which are all 98% Catholic and also all 3rd world countries with high crime rates or Rwanda, the most Catholic country in Africa and we all know what happened there. Or we could have ended up like Germany, an advanced Catholic country, but also started two world wars and responsible for killing over 70 million people, much more than Japan killed in WWII. I hate communist, but I’m grateful the atheist Soviets put a stop the Hitler’s Catholic Germany, pissed on his ashes and killed over 4 million German soldiers compared to America and England who combined barely killed 750,000 German soldiers.

    I am just disappointed this discussion is in reaction to the trailer for Silence, and not the movie itself. I would rather them have waited until they had seen the film, so the discussion would not be on a mere first impression. There is a LOT to reflect on and discuss after watching the movie, and I was hoping to hear some Catholic commentary on the way the movie plays out.

      We made this video a few months ago because people asked us to review the trailer when it first came out. I agree that there is a lot to reflect on and discuss about the movie. We saw it a few days ago and our full review of the movie is currently being edited and will be up in a day or two -David

    What I see in this trailer is what Bono challenged Christian artists to do. Show thedarkness as well as the light.

    I thought this film was excellent, but sadly the story is about how two men who renounced their faith publicly. As a result Christianity failed to take hold in Japan. In a country of honor, loyalty, and an honorable death these men failed. It is heavily rooted in some of the false teaching of Catholicism. For those that are mature in the faith and know the Bible I recommend it. It really begs the question of real persecution and how little many of us have experienced it here in America. It is though provoking and raises inter personal questions. However, I think this film is subtly mocking the church.

    You should really see Scorsese's The last temptation of Christ and think for yourselves. It is in a way a christian movie about man wanting to reach God and live a life of sanctity but having his earthly nature tempting him on the opposite direction. Jesus is there for showing an ideal towards one follow. It's all there that message, but the tricky thing, and the artfulness of it, is because it's in the subtext, people need to be clever and read it right - it's much easier to just dismiss it for the surface portrays Jesus having mundane actions. Again It's not about Jesus but about man trying to do good while struggling with his own sinful nature. Go watch it. It's a masterpiece, beautifully made, of of the director's best. (an for the record, I'm christian.)

    I am more than a little concerned about Martin Scorsese's past history with the Last Temptation of Christ, a truly blasphemous film, as well as the source material. In the ending of "Silence" the novel (SPOILER WARNING), the priest commits blasphemy/apostasy in order to prevent his people from suffering. It seems to me that this is the antithesis of what the Church teaches regarding martyrdom and holding fast to the Faith of our Fathers, even unto torture and death. It seems to me that this ending espouses an "end justifies the means" philosophy in contradiction to Church teaching and should not be acceptable to faithful Catholics without showing some real negative consequences to the priest's choice.

      And now these three remain: Faith, hope, love. But the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13
      Anything done out of love is from God for God is love. SPOILERS If the main character's decision to denounce saves others from brutality then it is good. God is still God if he denounces his faith, nothing's going to change. Christianity is about action. It's about living a life loving others even when it is difficult. It's not just saying the right words. In the end that is superficial. Just my two cents. God bless.

      If you told a Jew that eating pork would save his brothers and mother from torture, what do you think would the answer be? Hint: 2 Maccabees 7
      If you told a Christian in Ancient Rome that just a little incense offered to the Emperor would appease him and you could have your life, what do you think his answer would be?
      If you told St. Thomas More that he could just sign the damnable paper and be done with it, let Henry have his way, what do you think the answer is?
      If you told the Little Sisters of the Poor to just let Obama have his abortifacients and contraception coverage, what matter is it to them, anyway, how do you think they might regard you?

    • @booboochild8561
      @booboochild8561 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is deciding the fate of others for them (especially when it involves torture). If one doesn't have mercy and compassion for those whose fate he or she has control over then they've lost the whole meaning of Christianity- to treat the least of these as if they were Christ himself.
      1 Corinthians 13:3 (amp)- If I give all my possessions to feed the poor and I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it does me no good at all.

      BooBooChild Oh, so the martyrs are actually the apostates? The Bible glorifies and promotes sin? I see.

      BooBooChild Perhaps on this Feast of the Holy Innocents, we can meditate on how Sts. Joseph and Mary sinned by not offering their infant to Herod so he would not slaughter all the others! What negligence! Clearly they lost sight of what it was all about.

      I am sorry Angela Curio, not attempting to be rude, but you are mistaken, that is absolutely incorrect. It was not changed from China to Japan. Not sure where you got that. It is fiction based on historical events that occured in Japan. Absolutely nothing to do with China.
