I had to use a tiny ratchet wrench for 1/4" bits. None of my screwdrivers would reach it without being at such a bad angle that I couldn't get a grip on the screw.

Previous owner of my B6 snapped the heads off the screws I can tell you replacing the whole unit was not fun.

On one side on my A4 B6 Avant the screw was so rusted I had to drill it out. Bought stainless replacement screws from Ireland, because no shops here in Norway had them.

Anyway to remove a stripped screw?

I have a 2008 Audi A4 quattro convertible and I try to replace the whole license plate light plastic housing but when I unscrew it the plastic housing is stuck and don't come out even when I remove the screw. The right side plastic housing the screw is all the way in which I can't see it that well. What do you think I should do? Can I use WD40 to loosen the edges of the plastic license plate housing and try to get it out with a flat screw driver to pop it out? I'm changing both left and right plastic license plate housing with new Audi bulbs.

Yes, they tend to do that and it's very annoying!! You'll need a screw extractor of some kind, and it could get messy! You need something that can grip into the head and get it to move, and of course new screws for when you do finally get them out. Best of luck, not a nice job!

I had to drill one of the screws out. I used a dremel with a flexible shaft, a 3mm drill bit and lots of patience.

If you are changing them for LED's you will need to change BOTH, otherwise the Police stop you every 5 bloody minutes when they're bored!!!

Assuming that the bulbs are definitely ok (?), and that they'll only come on when the headlights are on, and and you've checked the fuses for possible issues there, then the next stage would be to check the power going to the bulb inside the housing, with a multimeter. To see if the 12v feed is coming through to the bulb. After that it's going to be more complex by starting to trace and test the wiring. Best of luck!

I just had a MOT failure on one of these bulbs. It turned out that the bulb was ok, and the wiring supplied 12V, but the connection between the metal on the bulb holder and the metal inside the boot lid was faulty. I bent the metal on the bulb holder slightly. That fixed the problem.
