I lived in North Dakota for 12 years in my 20’s. It will forever hold A special place in my heart. There is just something about the people and the scenery. Most of all I miss the people “North Dakota Nice” is the saying and it’s 100% true some of the best people I have ever met in my entire life.
Served in the United States Air Force at Minot Air Force Base, bout 12 miles north of the town, of Minot. Primary mission - Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) & B-52 Bomber - both atomic varients. I served in a helicopter detachment - primary mission was to serve the 91st Missile Wing. 🇺🇸
Well, I'll be. THE WELK HOMESTEAD is not something I'd imagine still 'being there', but yes - certainly a part of many of our lives. Really cool. 'Ah one anda two!'
The artists name is Gary Greff, a very nice gentleman who has a dream of keeping his home area alive. A man with an enormous dream. Keep the dream going Gary.
My mom used to watch Lawrence Welk show every Sunday! She especially loved the dancing. In the 1970s, I found the dancing and music so old fashioned compared to the pop music I listened to. Today I am a big fan of Big Band music!
I don't know if you will ever see this comment but Lawrence Welk was a childhood friend of my Dad's. I have never been to the Welk home but Lawrence was at my home. He and his main guy from the show was with him. Wish I could remember the year. In one of the buildings you showed a sit on grinding wheel. I still have my Dad's wheel, it's in my flower garden in front of my house. My Dad used to help the Welk's with the harvest. My Dad had a large team of horses he would bring over and the Welk's would help my Dad's with their harvest. Yes the Welks were from russia. My dad was born on the ship coming over to america. there was a large German settlement at Odessa Russia and that is where they were all from, even my Mom's parents came from there and they all spoke German, in fact my parents talked German with Lawrence when he was at my parents home. And yes we watched the L Welk show every week on TV. it was a must. I am glad you did this portion of the video so I could see where my Dad hung out with the Welk's. some of the small town's I heard you mention were hang outs for my dad and his friends. brought back a good memory of my folks, I heard a lot of stories from back there. I now live in Oregon. I was born in Bismarck and my dad came out here to work at the army depot. some times I wonder what my life would have turned out if he had stayed back there and raised wheat. I think the cold got to them
Rustifer..... I hauled the big windmill hubs up that road many times and always took that detour on the enchanted highway on the way back empty.... So many cool things to see and remember!! Just good ole small town America!! Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota... wonderful folks!!
He had a restaurant on the old Highway 395 in Southern California between Escondido and Temecula in the early 70's I remember watching his TV show, had a bubble machine at the beginning of the show..
Yes I grew up with Lawrence Welk every Sunday night it was on & it was a family night, I'm in mid sixty. Thank you Russ very interesting thanks for the ride. Pretty cool wow at cowboy museum is awesome I'm going to have to put that on my list for 2023 thanks again Russ
Thanks for the video on Strausburg ND When you mentioned it and seen the first road knew the area I visited the Welk Farm a few years back and was met by a huge hailstorm and had to take shelter in the entry way of the home with one of the volunteers Who would have ever thought he would be the maker of Champagne Music Thanks for all your videos of capturing the-back roads of these states
Thanks Russ for this great video. I want to wish you a happy birthday for tomorrow with 12 months of happiness, 52 weeks of health and 365 days of safe travel. K from Toronto
This is so beautiful to see all of his work on the road scrap metal art work he done back then for us to see that way I’m so proud to say he sure knew how to make it look like what he made all through that stretch of the highway that way
I worked in the Bowman area in 2012 for 6 months and drove up to Medora and played Bully Pulpit golf course and it's beautiful. Good good people up in N.D❤
I remember N.D. well. Beautiful in summer but you won't get me back there in winter. I lived through 7 yrs. there and just can not take the winters. Thanks for the memories.
I loved this. My grandmother grew up in Litchville, and she said Lawrence would come and play at their dance. My grandad ran steam powered thresher back then
@@ifandwhen-kl2crin trying to get over there. My understanding is grandad supplied electricity to town with his stem engine. I still have a lot of relatives there that I haven't met.
I believe the boys slept in the top floor and the only way to get there was by those steps on the outside of the house. Can you imagine going to bed when the temps were below 20 degrees below zero and the northwest wind was whipping across that lake?
Thanks Russ! I've sat on that overlook bench in Wakashita... those views will always be in my memories and there has never been many folks there ... peaceful
Thank you for this wonderful journey through North Dakota! Lawrence Welk homestead! Enjoyed seeing the sod house in the big house! Also enjoyed the antique car and western museum! Absolutely the sculptures! Your camping space in Montana was great too!!😀🌵🐎🇺🇸
Very cool. Every Saturday growing up we went to my Grandmothers and after dinner she would have Lawrence Welk on...I didn't know he was from North Dakota. Thx.
Well we thank you for your service doing all the driving for us here in southern Alberta, Canada seen all that beautiful country and all the beautiful artwork all through that run. You just went through on
Hi again Russ. Wow!! I will never stop saying that for all the places I have seen thanks to your travels. Lawrence Welk yes, I did indeed watch him with my folks back in the days. Never forget him saying one and a two and off they went with the show. It's funny how states have the same names for towns, Her in Pa we have a Strasburg also they have a train Museum there and a real nice Steam Engine ride out through the Pa Dutch country farms. We also have some fantastic Auto Museums in the area. Lots to see in Pa and I really need to go see more of it. Enough of me blabbing and thanks again for sharing. Safe travels and good health.
You have a very blessed life. I'll soon to be 60 in January working my butt off 12 hours a day in this tractor trailer to hopefully be able to do what you're doing in a couple years or so. Life is too short to just be alive and not experience life itself. By the way loved the highway 50 tour that was really good
Wow you keep mentioning Quartzsite. It's so funny to me . I lived in Ehrenberg Arizona and loved Quartzsite. 1998 and 1999. That mountain is the most beautiful pink and purple in the morning. Every day my daughter and I woke up early to see the sunrise ... you can't even put it into words the beauty of it all. Ehrenberg has grown up now. There was only one small trailer park there when I lived in it. There were about 20 trailers and only half of them were filled. God I loved that place.
Nice to see this! I visited long ago, before the state took over, and it was starting to look a little dilapidated. I remember him on PBS. My father had more direct memories of him. The generation that grew up in this world is dying off. If you know someone of that age, it's very much worth talking to them!
What a wonderful video you have created of my home state. I grew up at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. I spent my life working on the Missouri River powerplants. My wife and I shall watch for further videos. A good videographer you are.
I think they used mostly coal for heat back then. Trees are few and far between in N.D.! I had to shovel coal as a kid in south Fargo in the early 50's. My Dad had to haul water in two new garbage cans he bought for that purpose when our hand pumps froze up. I had 1 brother and 7 sisters. Lawrence Welk played on WDAY Radio. I remember us all dancing and singing to it! Dad played banjo.
Russ thank you so much for the video, i love your channel and always wanted to see North Dakota. I'm sure there must be more to see especially the farming community i would like to see. Thanks a Mil ❗👌
Love all the history and heritage. I would love to spend sometime back then. I have Cherokee blood in me and would love to spend time with all the Indians. We need to give them back their land. You do great on all your videos. Would like to meet you if you ever come back through Ohio.
I love to check the DATE of each video, but this one looks like Summer, it can't be right since I've got snow outside. Russ is editing, lol. Beautiful video work again Russ. You are leaving a legacy for your family one day and us. I'm a baby boomer, ok, AZ history, Barry Goldwater was wise enough to photograph the indigenous people in the WEST. I would love to see more of his photos. I'm enjoying this new video Russ. We age & then we try to keep going but looking at all the mountains and rocks, they last longer than we do. Strange life. Something about the mountains & the west it draws you into it, almost like we're reincarnated or something. I love history.
Hi russ been subed since you did route 66 this year an love all the travels seeing the small towns an country something i wouldnt see otherwise . Cheers mate from oz 🇦🇺
A very neat place as I love history. There is ;another National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. If you haven't seen it and are in the area it is worth seeing.
Elaborate visit indeed. Missed 'Dakota' aeroplane, that could fit in the motor museum. Massive machine I witnessed in my early days roaring noisy engine.
Thank you Russ ,, I’ve enjoyed so many States of Traveling 🧳 with you today on Sunday !! Your A Great Adventure Leader ,, with awesome Cute Character of a Man ‘ West Virginia- Amish Ohio - Now North Dakota 🙏
My first car was a 1936 Plymouth bought for $75.00 and gas was 36 cents a gallon when in high school, San Luis Obispo CA. Those where the days. I made $7 dollars a week. Mowing lawns for a dollar with a push mower and was glad to do it.

I loved this. My grandmother grew up in Litchville, and she said Lawrence would come and play at their dance. My grandad ran steam powered thresher back then
Nice! Litchville was founded by my great great grandfather. Both of my parents graduated from Litchville HS. The Tasty Treat is still open!
