We ate at two different restaurants and gave them both our ratings, so watch the video to see what we think. We visit the Shambles, Cliffords Tower, try our best to walk the wall.. Do you think we got to walk the wall? What do you think we missed?

I stayed in York, couldn't sleep so went for walk very early up to the Minster, Sun was just rising a beautiful summer morning. The streets were still quiet but there was already a choir singing, I sat in the morning Sun and listened while smoking a cigarette. It was lovely.
I used to do the same thing 20 years ago after out the night club and often had a moment listening on a Sunday morning. I my the city so badly
Glad we could bring back some good memories. Cheers, Chris
For anyone inspired to visit York after this. Use the park and ride rather than drive in and park. Spaces in York are VERY limited and expensive. The Park and Ride buses run every 15mins and are fast and clean.
Also the train, the station is right opposite the city walls and so not far to walk to the city center etc.
That is a great recommendation. We will look into that if we ever make it back. Thanks. Cheers, Chris
I'm 20 mins from York on a train
In never get tired of going to York.
I rode across Vietnam on a motorbike from North to South, 3 weeks, 1500 miles, no accommodation booked, pure freedom.
On our last stop we met 2 Korean ladies. We kept in touch.
A year later bonui flew from Korea to London then got a train to Edinburgh to go to the fringe festival.
I suggested she booked a stop off at York with it being on the London to Edinburgh line.
I met her in York and I was her tour guide for the day.
We had a great time and she wouldn't have been able to see so much of york without a bit of insider knowledge
We walked the walls, had fish and chips, went to the shambles, york minster, tea by the river and much more
York is amazing, especially at Christmas time
Glad you enjoyed it
That sounds like an amazing friendship and what a way to have it start. Sounds like you enjoy getting out there and taking advantage of the adventure when you can. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Chris
I love York. You can easy do a week in York. Theres lots of places to visit. The National Railway Museum is there. Free entry, a good way spend a few hours. There is an ice cream boat aswell when its nice down by the river. Plus a well known chippy there in town - "Drake's Fish & Chips". The Shambles also has 2 Harry Potter store in it called "The Potions Cauldron" and "The Shop That Must Not Be Named". Fun stores to visit. In the Shambles is also the aptly named "Shambles Tavern", which is a nice quaint little pub. York also has a history of chocolate/sweet making, Rowntrees (that invented the Kit Kat and Fruit Pastilles etc) and Terry's(that do the chocolate orange)is from there. Theres a store there called "York's Chocolate Story", and they do tours showing the techniques and the history of chocolate making. Worth a visit
Theres also "Castle Howard", about 15 miles from the town centre, which isnt a castle, but a BIG fancy state home. I have a video on it "True opulence - A special look at Castle Howard"
Agreed. Castle Howard is an absolute gem.
And Jorvik Viking Centre.
Thank you for all the wonderful recommendations and insight. We will definitely back heading back to check out as much as we can! We really appreciate all of you so much. 🤍 Jess x
Love York. I'm from Durham. To think they built these things without machines blows my mind as a builder. If you go back go to the yorvig place. Viking artefacts. Great video. Reminds us not to tske for granted the stuff we get to see every day 🏴🇬🇧
It always makes me sit back and wonder how they were able to do it and how long it would take. Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Chris
Excellent way to start the day, I went to the University of York as a mature student (albeit still in my early 20s) and it’s such a great little city.
Vaudevillian,
Friend I'm so glad! This video definitely was a joy to put together. We really loved our time in York and Chris and I want to return and explore even more. There is just so much to see and enjoy! It's definitely a city we will not soon forget. Im sure going to university there would have been a wonderful experience. 🤍 Jess & Chris x
People rave about York until they go to Chester no compettition !
A place close to my heart, my absolute favorite place in the whole world "so far"...thanks for bringing back some lovely memories ❤
Oh, friend, we're so glad it brought back lovely memories. 🤍 Jess x
Hiya Jess, Chris, Colette and Shane hope you are all well my friends 🙏.
Love these tiny streets full of quaint shops and hidden gems. It was a shame the city wall was closed but the rest of your walk more than made up for it 😊
Thank you for all the time and effort you invest in your incredible channel.
Wishing you a great Friday and an even better weekend. ❤ xx
I visited years ago in the summer and it was a beautiful warm evening. I sat on a wall waiting for my bf, and there was a choir singing from the church near by, and then all the church bells started ringing. There are many churches in the centre of York and I felt like I was in a Brother Cafael mystery. It was a wonderful feeling, never forgotten it 😊
Glad we could bring back a great memory for you. Cheers, Chris
Well done guys, 👏 York gave its name to NewYork but it's still much smaller and cute😅 You can wander around and take your time looking at a time-lapse place in some ways and pretty Cathedral, Walls of the City to walk around and look elevated across the City leading to the Cliffords tower on the mound built by William the Conquer to control York. History is alive there you can feel it. Glad you loved your time in the original Capital of the North. By Normans, Vikings and Plantagenets! Richard lll recently found under a Leicester City Parking space, is said to have loved York too and preferred it to London. His reinturnment in Leicester grave has a York stone plinth top adorned with the Yorkist white rose carved into the stone. Best wishes🎉
We loved exploring! The US definitely got a lot from the UK, and I'm so thankful for this opportunity to explore and experience this amazing country. Thank you for coming along with us. 🤍 Jess x
I'm English born and bred, I worked for a well known white goods supplier doing deliveries in York, I used to HATE York, the streets are so tight, tourists everywhere, cars double parked etc etc etc BUT when people looking through fresh eyes are gobsmacked I now realise what a beautiful city York actually is, thank you for making this cynical Englishman come to his senses ✌️
Thank you for sharing with us. We're so thrilled about having the opportunity to share our fun experiences with you. 🤍 Jess x
I remember my first time in York, it was a school trip as I live in nearby Newcastle. I've been many times since. The first time I saw Harry Potter, I instantly thought of The Shambles.
💯 we loved it, and we will definitely be back to see more. Thank you for sharing your time with us. 🤍 Jess x
Fabulous vid of a fabulous city. If you like Medieval Cities I recommend Tallinn for a short visit as well.
That sounds like a great recommendation. Cheers, Chris
Chris , how does it make you feel as a serving member of the forces when you see so many war memorials around the country . And did you know there are only 56 thankful villages in England & Wales , these are villages where all the men returned safe from WW1
Great trip and definitely one of my favourite City’s have you looked at Chester yet that’s another fabulous City to visit , if your doing Yorkshire again Harrogate and Haworth are definitely worth a visit . Your wife and daughter will probably be more interested as Haworth is where the Brontë sisters lived and wrote most of their works , I’m sure you can walk to where Wuthering Heights was based on from the town
Agree with this; Chester is lovely 👍
Knowing what the members did for their country, it is very humbling to see. The fact that the villages, towns and cities take time to remember makes me glad to see. The fact that there are only 56 villages that were not affected, at least with the ultimate sacrifice, is wild to even comprehend. Cheers, Chris
Grew up in York and remember an incident in the late 60’s. I could not walk through the Shambles due to a coach party of elderly Americans ( Probably WW2 veterans and their wives). I followed behind listening to the tour guide and will never forget one lady turn to her husband and say “ Gee Wilber, it’s so old”.
Going to York in February for a few days at the Viking festival
We love the history that is all around us here. 🤍 Jess x
York Minster is one of those buildings that seems impossible to have been built but was. Maintenance costs must be horrific and you can see the effects of acid rain on the surface. York is a beautiful area and I am pleased that you and your children got to visit. The Shambles are touristy and crowded but that does not detract from the history and original buildings. I suspect that the wall walk is closed in winter because of the danger of slips and falls on the slippery steps and floor.
It is wild to think how and how long it took to make a master piece like that. We are glad we made it too. It was worth it. The walls seemed to be closed based on the day, but we would love to make it back on it if we were able. Cheers, Chris
Very enjoyable, we also went to the train museum while we were there. Which you can spend a day just there.
Thank you so much for coming along with us. We loved York. 🤍 Jess x
Glad you enjoyed York, I recommend going on an evening ghost walk, there are several, as someone who was born and bred here we did one a few years ago and really enjoyed it, I would also advise using one of the park and rides, no need to worry about time and cost of car parking, incidentally, I think the Roman column was installed upside down, the bar walls are often closed in bad weather..
I really appreciate the recommendations. On our next visit to York, we will try the park and rides & see if we can schedule a ghost walk. Thank you for sharing with us. 🤍 Jess x
25 mins on the train for us love York lovely in the summer or Christmas time
Sounds like you can visit often. Cheers, Chris
Yorkshire pudding, yum. You should have checked out the national rail museum.
It was something we wanted to see, but ran out of time. Cheers, Chris
I watched a documentary on the archaeological digs in York . It was fascinating that the width of many of the shop fronts today are still based on the Viking plot sizes.
In many other British towns and cities you will find the shop front widths are a single or multiples of a mediaeval burgage
Thank you, we will look into those documentaries! We appreciate you sharing 🤍 Jess x
Love the city of york
Same friend and beautiful city. 🤍 Jess x
I do hope that you were able enter the Cathedral. I am always overawed by the magnificence of the architecture outside and inside, but the outstanding feature inside has to be the the stained glass windows, particularly on a sunny day when the colours are so beautifully highlighted. I'm assuming that you're based in Norfolk so it's quite a treck on a wet winters day. You do put so much thought and effort into your videos. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire.
It was amazing to see. We were not able to film the inside though, they requested not, so we wanted to honor that. Cheers, Chris
On my last visit to York, I took my wife into a pub called the Terrace. Nearly all the seats and tables were occupied, but I looked round a corner and found what i thought was a large room. It was actually a very small room with a mirrored wall. Imagine my embarrassment when I came to a dead stop.
Sounds like that most have been embarrassing, but at least you can look back now and laugh about it. Cheers, Chris
Thank you for another lovely video. York is on my to-do list. But you're cramping as much as you can before you go home to the USA❤
We're definitely take in as much as we can. I think we have done that since we moved here to the UK. We love it so much. 🤍 Jess x
@DaydreamersBound ❤️❤️❤️
Many day trips to York. Absolutely loved being there. Not sure if you got to the Jorvik Viking centre? I recall when that was still an active archaeological dig and the visitor centre was just in the planning. I still have a an oyster shell from there! Hope you got to see the interior of the Minster, it really is breathtaking. Glad to see the Shambles wasn't too busy for you, but a shame the walls were closed, there are cracking views from up there(though it's quite narrow and only has railings in sections). Those pasties looked yummy!
It was truly a fun filled day exploring York. We're so thankful we had the opportunity to experience all we did. We will be back to try and fit in the even more on our next York adventure. We're so thankful you came along with us. 🤍 Jess x
York is great, and the people are very friendly up there, but I would choose Chester or Winchester to visit - if I was a tourist and had a limited amount of time.
We love York. We will try and check them both before we head back to the US. 🤍 Jess x
The most magical city on this planet . I would live there if it the property were not so expensive.
It is quite amazing for sure. Cheers, Chris
I was lucky my now deceased mother lived there for over twenty years so I visited York often. Fantastic city but expensive, i also walked the whole length of the wall surrounding the centre by the big archway and if i remember correctly it was free but this was around five years ago.
I'm sure it was amazing to experience York with your mother regularly. 🤍 Jess x
I'm going to miss following your yellow jacket !😊
Oh, well, stick around and follow us on more adventures here and in the US. 🤍 Jess x
In many ways I love York but I also have a great love for a similar walled city of Chester. The walk on the walls down towards the racecourse is superb .
I agree, but it is important to understand that much of what you see in Chester is a 19th century creation. The half timbered buildings are recreations of the Tudor style. York is most 'authentic' with a mix of architecture as York has evolved over many centuries.
Thank you so much. We're definitely going to pay a visit to Chester. 🤍 Jess x
Great video again .I am an hour bus ride from York ..The minster is always a wow ...
Indeed it is. Cheers, Chris
A beautiful and informative video. I had no idea about the South Africa memorial. Next time, I can recommend the National Railway museum, if you have time. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your love and wonderful support! When we return, we will check out the museum and appreciate the recommendation. 🤍 Jess x
Another awesome video guys .
Thank you, friend! 🤍 Jess x
Great video guys, York looks stunning. I've lived my most of my life in England & York wasn't on my UK bucket list until last year. Lots of great videos like this have highlighted how great it is!
You are probably a southerner. They think England stops at Watford Gap.
@petermicklethwaite6281 you are probably a Northerner. They think England stops at Birmingham
Glad you enjoyed the video. It is a great place to check out especially if it is on the bucket list. Cheers, Chris
When i hear you say "The wait wasn't to 'shabby' and we then went for tea" I think its not unreasonable to say that you've acclimatised well!! 😂😂
Haha, yea sounds about right. Cheers, Chris
I think it's important to get yourself a momentous of a journey, something you can look at or use and it makes you smile when you remember where you got it and the memories that go with it
We do get something special from all our travels. 🤍 Jess x
Ohhhh my old home town
I miss the north soooo badly : ( how is the city???? It’s been 8 years since I’ve been back. Is it still amazing feel good vibe and feeling to the place ??
We can assure you, your city is doing well. Hopefully you were able to enjoy it through our eyes. Cheers, Chris
I was a student at York University in 1977/80. There are a number of very historic pubs that you should try to visit.
How lovely, thank you for sharing with us. We will have to visit a Pub on our next visit. 🤍 Jess x
Dubrovnik, Carcassonne, Florence, Sienna, San Gimignano, Prague, Bruges, Tallinn, Turun, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Edinburgh, Colmar, Avila, Obidos, Chester, Hallstatt, Kotor, Sighisoaria, Lubeck, Visby, Mont San-Michel, Lavenham, Rhodes, Granada, Meissen, Oviedo, Monsanto, Gruyeres, Laguardia, Kilkenny, Saint Emilion, Eze, Turun, Besalu, Cochem, Bamberg, Ohrid, Vitre, Motovun, Vyborg, Krakow, Sibiu, San Marino, Brisighella, Cesky Krumlov, Rocamadour, etc. There's a few Ryanair/Easyjet flights to plan! Cannot think of any at all in USA, sorry! ;) PS the pathetic, worthless (USA) spellchecker has had a terminal fit! I could list more but it is time for a soup for lunch and my cat is blocking the keyboard, purring!
Surely Montana is worth a visit, how about mount Dinali ,or the grand canyon, yellowstone or Niagra falls , don't put yourselves down buddy , and not to forget the everglades, even country has its own beauty
Every country, big sky is a reference to only America,
Those are some great places. Maybe we can change your mind when we share our viewpoint of America. Cheers, Chris
Love York ❤
We can see why. Cheers, Chris
So glad you enjoyed your trip to my hometown. It was a pity the city walls we closed due to the freezing conditions, the stone work gets very slippery. You visited my tea shop in the shambles, excellent choices in there. You crammed a lot in your visit, do come back in the summer. As others have said the park and ride buses are a better parking solution.
Thank you friend! We will definitely be back to walk the wall before we leave back to the US. We really appreciate you coming along with us. 🤍 Jess x
Good for you to get around so much.😄 York, is of course from the Viking, Yorvik name.
Thanks, we try our best. Cheers, Chris
Walked the Shambles many times. Betty's is expensive but a real must.
Sounds like a great recommendation. Cheers, Chris
York is a lovely city for sure and North Yorkshire is very beautiful and well, worth exploring. However if you’re into basically unspoilt ancient cities Italy and Spain are the places to go. For instance on my visit to Toledo I literally felt I was in a time warp, absolutely incredible.
We loved exploring and experiencing York. We appreciate you coming along with us. We appreciate the recommendation! 🤍 Jess x
Being a proud born and bred Yorkshireman I recall a joke from back during Covid in 2020:
God was told that due to Covid he had to work from home. He replied that he already was. When asked where he was he replied "Yorkshire of course!".
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
P.S. You really should have visited the National Rail Museum (N.R.M.). Huge and very interesting, even if you are not particularly into railways/railroads. And the best thing? Entry is FREE!!! 🙂
I like the joke. Glad we are able to get out and see these places while we are here, unlike the COVID days. Sounds like we missed out, if we are able to make it back, it is on the list for sure. Cheers, Chris
Did you go up the tower I wonder in the Minster? Great views.
We did not record anything because it is their policy. Beautiful place though. Cheers, Chris
When are you visiting Chester?
Thank you for the recommendation! 🤍 Jess x
Only visited York once for a football match . Will have to properly visit the city again ASAP .
That is not a bad idea. Cheers, Chris
Fantastic York thanks for sharing your trip 🎉
Absolutely. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers, Chris
Great Vid, imagine the effect on the populace whom lived in tumbledown cottages of buildings like York Minister and the Castles of the 11th century.
Glad you enjoyed the video. It is wild to think what it was back then. Cheers, Chris
I’m one of the lucky people who live in this beautiful city.
It's was such a lovely experience to explore the city of York! 🤍 Jess x
Everyone seems to miss the National Train Museum right next to York station and the Jorvik Viking centre and York Museum. If you get to Leeds DO NOT miss the Royal Armouries.
Yup. We did the Train Museum as well as the Toy Museum.
I think it really is not that people are missing it but have to pick what matters more to them. We will definitely try to visit Leeds. We really appreciate your recommendation. 🤍 Jess x
Hi Guys! York is very pretty in the spring when all the grass covered banks at the base of the wall are covered in daffodils.
Have you had opportunity to visit Chester? Another historic city, I think you would enjoy it. Bye!
We are sure it is so beautiful in spring.
We're going to try and visit Chester before we leave. We appreciate your recommendation! 🤍 Jess x
Was hoping you found the Golden Fleece pub the most haunted in york or the railway museum but maybe next time 😂
Not this time, maybe next time?! 🤍 Jess x
Good sturdy boots or shoes are important when visiting York, the cobblestones aren't everywhere, but the streets are old and curb stones wear too, heels are definitely not advised. As you can see in this video, the ground is wet, this makes walking very slippery in places, forego looking good for your visit and be safe in sturdy but comfortable footwear, only you will know, but a fall will let a lot of people know when you least want them to.
York is a stunningly beautiful place and one which you can't see in a day, I've lived near York most of my life and I am still finding new old things about the city.
That is a great point. Footwear is key with a place like this. Cheers, Chris
I'm hoping this summer to get out and about. Not travelled around since 2019 before the lurgy. Yorkshire is east of my location. I am surprised with the amount of tourists at this time of year. I've noticed over the last few years, More and more Americans are travelling beyond there borders. Its nice
We hope you are able to get out and about too. Also, glad to see more American's this way. There is a lot to see. Cheers, Chris
My favourite would be the pie shop. Up north is pie country.
We will definitely check it out next time. Thank you 🤍 Jess x
Would you have a holiday home to start with and do 6 months over here and 6 months in the States.. As I said before you should visit Leeds. Chris would love the Royal armouries. If you look up the itenery they do live jousts.
For the time, we would have a holiday home but possibly forever home possible.
We're definitely going to try to visit Leeds! Thank you so much for the recommendation. 🤍 Jess x
For anyone visiting the UK York should be on your agenda. I have visited several times, not hard for me as I live on the East Anglia.
We agree, it is a great place to visit. Cheers, Chris
If you want to walk on the walls, go to one of the Bars - gateways - much easier access. Don't know if anyone pointed you to that entrance but they weren't helping!
Looks like it was simply the case that the wall was closed that day (that was the Bootham Bar stairs that they tried at 15:52). 😕
Unfortunately we did but was closed due to the poor weather. We will try to visit again. 🤍 Jess x
The walk down fossgate is much overlooked
That is true. Cheers, Chris
You was close to the ruins of st Mary’s abbey.its in a public park.plus the Yorkshire regiment museum is near Clifford’s tower
Yes, to be honest, there is so much to do in York. We will be back to visit again. 🤍 Jess x
So their is the national railway museum plus the Yorkshire museum and the castle museum.mybrother lives in pocklington which is near York.
A real shame you didn't get into York Minster, never mind still enjoyed the city 👍🇺🇸🇬🇧💯
Unfortunately, we can't share any pictures from the Minster. It's only allowed for private use only. It is definitely beautiful, and we recommend to everyone to explore it. 🤍 Jess x
@DaydreamersBound I wonder why, that seems a bit strict because I bet you could get pictures or film on TH-cam anyway from inside. That's the times we're living in I suppose
@kevinworrall231 friend, I'm sure you can, but we follow what is aksed of us. We're just thankful we have great memories. Unfortunately, it does say on their website, no videos or pictures unlessfor private use only, and we always ask before we just assume we can. 🤍 Jess x
@DaydreamersBound very respectful Jess, God bless
Pleased that you had a good time in York, but unfortunately, you hardly scratched the surface of this great city. You need at least 2-3 more days. As others have said, do try to get to Chester before you leave. It is another gem. x
We do wish we had more time, but we try to make the most of what we have. Cheers, Chris
Hiya. Well, at least you now know, if you want to walk the wall, you have to go to York when it isn't raining. Hope you got some great footage inside the Minster for your own records. Are you no longer taking weekend breaks, just day trips, before you leave? Any news on that? Stay safe. All the best to you.
How silly closing the wall walk just because it was wet.
We will take a few more trips, but we are taking every advantage we can for at least day trips while we are still here. Still waiting on the official date, but once we get it nailed down, we will share with everyone. Cheers, Chris
York ghost merchants is my favorite shop in the shambles.you need to visit the castle museum and guy fawkes who was a member of the gunpowder plot(5th November guy fawkes night or bonfire night) was born in York.also dick Turpin a famous highwayman is buried in York.places you might like beamish living museum, ruins of fountains abbey, bovington tank museum,Portsmouth naval yard with his victory,London transport museum,Whitby with its famous abbey ruins, castleton in Derbyshire, royal armories in Leeds,British museum in London.thats a few suggestions.
Thank you so much f0r the wonderful recommendations. We really appreciate you sharing with us. 🤍 Jess x
Not far from me york an amazing city loads to see
We love exploring York. 🤍 Jess x
@DaydreamersBound its an amazing place i wotk round there on the transpennie route upgrade
I went there years ago - and I walked across the roof of York Minster
That must have been quite the view. Cheers, Chris
York is nice but Chester is equally nice you need to explore the west side of the uk more
The Chester wall walk is well worth doing.
We have that on the list to check out. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Chris
Parts of the wall only has one side, no railings or brick side etc. That would be why they close it after storms/particulalry rainy/windy days. Such a shame, as it was one of my favourite things I did when I visited.
Wow, thank you for sharing with us. We will definitely be back to walk the wall. 🤍 Jess x
I’m surprised you didn’t visit the shop called “Saw you coming “ 😂
That would have been a good one. Cheers, Chris
My favourite shop in york is the Christmas shop ,can't remember the name kath something.
I did see many Christmas shops. Chris would have freaked out on me.. lol 🤍 Jess x
I grew up in York. The video of walking up The Shambles is exactly why I avoided it like the Plague. Hoardes of rubber neckers aimlessly meandering here and there making it impossible to just walk down it. Its been reduced to a medieval theme park. Glad I left.
I was born in York and I'm still there, well escaped! No York resident goes into the City centre, that was a quiet day, it's bloody horrendous usually. Dodge the tourist, dodge the drunks, a saturated mess of an overcrowded (once great) decaying dirty City.
Thank you for sharing with us. We had a lovely time. 🤍 Jess x
You can go down the Shambles late in the evening and hardly see a soul. It's easy when it's empty to imagine the old butchers' shops that lined the streets. Google 'York Shambles old photos' - rather more atmospheric than Harry Potter tourist stuff!
I don't thibk I have ever been to York without being able to get on tge city walls. There.ate several places where you can get onto them. Maybe domevrepairs were being done?
Next time you go, have a look at the National Railway Museum with its Royal Trains, Mallard locomotive etc. You could easily spend half a day there.
And the Jorvik Exhibition for the sights and smells of Viking York as you are carried aroundvthe settlement under ground level.
And the Yorkshire Museum.
The truth isvthat there are so MANY places in York to visit. Iust have been there 75 times or more, but it is my County Town!
We will definitely have to check them out. Thank you so much for your time sharing with us. We appreciate you, and I look forward to returning to York and doing the wall walk. 🤍 Jess x
I’ve never before seen anyone eating a Yorkshire pudding in the hand.
Oh, it was so delicious! We recommend giving it a go. 🤍 Jess x
The wall is too slippy when wet , you should have gone to the national railway museum instead , my niece lives in York but she's to posh for me 😁😎
Thank you for the recommendation. We will be back to do the wall walk. 🤍 Jess x
york is home to britains national railway museum
Most definitely, thank you for sharing. 🤍 Jess x
Right at the beginning of the shambles "don't argue with us ...got a knife". Sure that what I heard
Oh, I didn't hear that. Wow... I would have been terrified! 🤍 Jess x
York was the capital of the Danelaw. The Danelaw was that part of England controlled by the Vikings.
Thank you so much for sharing with us! 🤍 Jess x
The Shambles was a good shopping street when I was last there in the 80's, it looks bloody awful now. Just tourist tat.
if you haven't been there since the 1980s then how do these shops survive without custom ? by selling the tat that tourists buy, people complain then buy everything from Amazon
I am sure it was something to see in the 80s. Cheers, Chris
York goes back way beyond the middle ages it was significant in Roman times!
I don't think we should rank any ancient place as "the best", they are all amazing and should not be put in competition with each other. Seeing ancient places is not about making judgements about which is best but about far more important thing e.g learning about the past, understanding how people lived, etc.
For you maybe, and in your opinion. Do not force your opinions on other people, other people have their own thoughts and feelings about the places they frequent. There are no laws about how they should or shouldn't be viewed 🤡...
We posed it as a question, however, yes I do think people can classify what they think is best. Cheers, Chris
@DaydreamersBound Exactly, all human experiences are subjective to the individual...
We agree, love! Thank you, Jay 🤍 Jess x
What a shame you were not able to walk the walls! But you can just imagine how much busier with tourists the city is in summer - especially round The Shambles - if it was that busy on a freezing January day? Definitely so much more to see as well, if you ARE able to get back. Like the Railway Museum and the Jorvik Centre. But the Minster HAS to be the stand-out? In every respect! Really enjoyed that - nice one!
Adrian,
It was such a bummer. Yes, there is so much to do, and we did as much as we could in cold. We have already planned our next visit. I will add the Museum & the Center to our must-see.
We're so thankful you enjoyed the adventure with us. The Minster is definitely a standout!
I can even imagine how crazy busy it is. Hope you have had a lovely week so far. 🤍 Jess & Chris x
@DaydreamersBound There are two similar words from the same root: min-ster and min-i-ster. York's great church/cathedral is a Min-ster, the word for a special teaching church. Love your videos and admire your determination to see so much. When, some years ago, I moved to a village near Cambridge, an American family from the nearby military base moved in next door. They were also determined to see as much as possible - which is why they had moved into a village and didn't live on the base. I used to explore the area along with the wife and we had a great time together. She told me that many American families spent their whole time in England never leaving the base because they had no interest in the 'outside world'. We were both amazed at the attitude.
The city walls may have been closed to stop people slipping and falling to their deaths because of icy conditions
It wasn't necessarily icy, but the conditions were not ideal for a wall walk. Cheers, Chris
Lived in England 67 years now been to York once which was once too many. Total tourist trap rip off up to and including having to pay £16 to get in a church (York Minster).
I understand, but we had to go before going back to the US. Just like us with US, New York, or Big California cities or Plus anywhere in Florida. 😉

Really poor town planning back then, building the roads so narrow. Why didn't they consider the arrival of cars?
Agreed, that would have been appreciated if they could have seen into the future and properly sized the roads. Cheers, Chris
Let's hope York doesn't get ruined by globalism like the other great cities in the UK.
Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Chris
York or New York. Which is your favorite?
We will let you know after we visit New York. Cheers, Chris
would absolutely not drive into York, there are a couple of great park and ride schemes
We loved driving in the city and it was the parking was definitely not bad at all. 🤍 Jess x
New york city is named after york after the English settled it .
As a Yorkshireman I don't want to do York down, it's great, but if you want the best medieval cities in the world you need to go to Belgium, France, Germany, Poland etc. They are astounding
Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Chris
I think York is overrated
Thank you for sharing. Jess x
I love York but describing the shambles as the "best preserved medieval street in the world" is massively incorrect. There are pretty much full intact medieval towns and villages all across continental Europe. As lovely as places like York are and many other places in the UK, what survives of medieval Britain are mainly cathedrals, churches, castles (many are ruins), monasteries, (again many in ruins) and the some streets and buildings - the shambles being one of the the best and most famous. Italy on its own makes our medieval remains look very sparse in comparison. Britain is mainly a Victorian and Georgian country so we're going to have to wait a few more centuries before those buildings, streets and towns are looked upon the same way
We think it was a great city to visit and would love to see some other medieval places in the future. Cheers, Chris
