  • This is a video of the correct way how to set a rat trap. We heard scratching from rodents in the attic and hopefully this trap baited with peanut butter, one of the best baits for rat traps, will catch the rat.

I left the laundry room door open and a rat came in. After several days of setting a rat trap, I would see the bait gone and the trap never went off. I used: peanut butter, a whole almond, cheese and the last day Spicy Nacho Doritos. I felt discouraged that the rat was eating the bait without setting off the trap. If the rat. was using surgical precision to get away with the bait, in the end what help me succeed was my determination every single day. My reasoning was: as good and accurate the rat is getting away with the bait, sooner or later it's bound to make a mistake and that will be the end of it. Sure enough, after six days, the rat made a mistake, it's dead and I can tell my success story with great satisfaction. Lesson: "If you keep persisting, you'll succeed."

Rats (and mice to a much lesser degree) tend to be cautious of everything 'new' in their usual surroundings.
Believe it or not, traditional rat traps actually suck if you are just trying to target 1-2 rats in a suburban home. The plastic ones with all the teeth will get them much sooner. Main reason is because of the way they have the bait compartment placement. You put peanut butter in the cylinder and they have no choice but to crawl up to properly lick it clean.

@@someone-ji2zb Yes, but the wire snap traps are just as effective as the others you mention IF the bait is placed strategically. I have a nearly 100% success rate with the traditional wire traps by placing the peanut butter on the underside of the trigger (instead of on top like most people do), a small walnut piece jammed on top of the trigger plate further secured to it with a piece of thread. Only 1 out of about 100 rats took all the bait without triggering the trap. I've eradicated the last few on our suburban property. They say trying to rid just 1 or 2 is difficult, but in my own experience a little extra strategy makes it easy to be rid of the last one or two. Knowing where to place the traps makes a huge difference too. A little recon before your mission tells you where the traps will work, by observing the route the rats move and looking for droppings. You can also change where they go by placing food out in a certain spot for about a week prior to trapping them. Once they learn there's a reliable food source there, your stubborn last couple rats will take the bait and your property will be free of them until a "nomad" rat comes along looking for a new home to start a colony.
Trapping rats is only a bandaid to the problem. To treat the underlying problem, clean up your property by eliminating food sources, garbage, places where rats like to nest and seal up your house. Make your property as unappealing to rats as possible and you won't be needing to trap them as often or at all.

I've found that bacon grease is like "pork-flavored pudding" to rats, and just a little of this on the trigger plate is all you need. Use too much and they find a way to lick it off without setting off the trap--or they'll set it off and manage to not get hit. The trick is to get them to spend a lot of time screwing around with the trigger plate, i.e., the more time spent on the trap, the better the odds that they'll get whacked.

Plastic ones work a lot better anyway due to the bait being so much harder to get out without tripping. One of the few plastic products on this frickin planet that is actually better than the wooden/metal ones.
It is so bloody easy to set these traditional ones off when placing them down too... Nevermind just setting the trap up.. setting it down is far more difficult if you need to place it in a confined area.

Keep pressure and keep fingers clear of the kill zone. These are so effective to rid yourself of rats or mice.

@@deadgaming20 Here's the trick that works way better than peanut butter alone. Instead of peanut butter on top, jam a piece of walnut on the trigger plate and put the peanut butter on the UNDERSIDE of the trigger plate. The rat has to work harder to get to the peanut butter and often moves the trigger in trying to get under it. If the rat still manages to lick it off without triggering the trap, it will have a hard time picking off the walnut piece without triggering the trap. You can even tie the walnut piece tight to the trigger plate with a piece of thread if the rat is too clever. Peanut butter by itself on top of the trigger plate as shown in this video is not very effective.
The peanut butter has a strong scent that attracts the rat to the trap, so you want to use that in conjunction with other solid bait. I have an almost 100% success rate with my methods.

one good tip when using these traps is to set the traps on the floor before setting it up. i have had many traps snap up in my face, even placing them very gently on the floor. then use a broom or some kind of long stick to gently move into place, because i have also had these Victor traps snap when moving. They are VERY sensitive!! do not touch the rats with bare hands either use a glove or plastic bag to grab and dispose of! these traps work very well. i have caught these pests within 12 hours of setting. if you dont have peanut butter you can use Nutella or any kind of Cake Frosting.

You can catch 100 rats/mice if you use a cantelope or watermelon seed. Just pinch the seed under the metal piece where he put the peanut butter. The rat will pull the seed setting the trap off. No need to re-bait, just set the trap again.

First you bend the trigger mechanism a slight bit so it goes off easier. You tie some string around the trigger and rub the peanut butter all over the string so the rat will tug on it. Set small nails all around the edge of the trap so the little bastard gets caught for sure.

Also for good measure ive been leaving it honey creamy peanut butter for 3 days on slides of cardboard to get it to trust me when i put it out in my cupboard. Each night its eaten it with no issues. Tonight i put out the trap with the same peanut butter. I dont put it on the edge of the trap just because smart rats will lick it and leave before getting to the main bit on the trap itself. Just wish my landlords would do their jobs lol. Living in an apartment. But calling code compliance tomorrow to report them. I have lupus and rats carry lots of pathogens. Using a peanut in the shell is much more effective than using peanut butter, and it is much cleaner. Just hook one peanut into the bait hook. That is what VICTOR designed that hook to hold. If you have rats in your attic, place the baited trap in your attic, and you will not need to place extra peanuts nearby. One peanut will do the job.

The best bait to use is a piece of TOOTSIE ROLL!!!
    Animals love sugar, like humans.
DO NOT place on top of the catch.
They will eat it and give you the "Chin Flick" afterwards.
JAM the piece INSIDE the catch area loop or claw, that way they have to gnaw at, which triggers the trap.
Once dusk sets they come out. They find it irresistible. Guaranteed to work 100% of the time!

I got a glancing blow on my thumb from one of these traps I thought I had secured well enough with my right palm. I underestimated the strength of the trap and it hurt like crazy. I use peanut butter but loosely wrap a piece of thread around the whole trigger pan and PB. Their teeth get caught in thread and they pull back setting it off.

good but I also wanna add to wear gloves because when I pushed back the bar a tiny metal splinter I didn’t notice that was probably an imperfection when they machined it went right into my hand

Should use rubber gloves - avoid getting human scent on it. Better trap is the T-Rex. For either trap, screw it down, otherwise if they survive (maybe just get their tail caught) they will leave with it attached to them!

Or, just buy a plastic trap with teeth and watch as a superior product actually catches the sucker on the first night due to proper placement of the bait compartment.
It never ceases to amaze me just how crappy these 'traditional' traps can be.

If you screw it down you give them leverage to pull out.

NEVER place your hand on the trap side or adjacent to it after pulling the spring bar back, period. The trip lever can be moved slightly (Set) to make the trap extremely sensitive. Again follow the 1st sentence here and you will not get hurt. Holding the safe of the trap also prevents it from nailing you if it goes off. Even though it may startle you, it is safer to do this because the trap cannot harm you this way.

The band aid on his hand is what made him learn how to do it safely?
