In case it's useful to anyone: I've been using a similar idea for awhile - I control 2 ATEM minis using Companion, but I take them both as webcams into OBS, using their separate USB C outputs. Then I have a series of scenes set up in OBS so that I can switch between the two ATEMs or view them both simultaneously - I use Macros in Companion to control the software and hardware switching at the same time. The advantage of this is A) you can use all 8 inputs from your two ATEMs since you're not daisy chaining any more and B) by using the PIP function on both devices you can display up to 4 camera feeds at once - which might be a fairly niche use case, but something I actually do regularly in my broadcasts.
is it possible to use USB-C out from mini to ATEM mini. We have the output port of mini not working. thinking of a way around to get a an HDMI out. Any suggestions?
I did it in the same way. Initially i bought a mini, used it a couple of months and then i bougth the iso. I had the option of selling the mini, but i solved my doubt making a daisy chain and use El gato. Good explanation to tune my configuration. Thank you!,

In regards to having 2 red buttons, I did not find a way to disable the color but you could add instance feedback to the 3 buttons 1,2 and 3 actions that would turn the ATEM 4-7 buttons to preview. You would end up with only one red button with the button on the ATEM 4-7 being green. Maybe not the cleanest way, but would make it easier to quickly figure out which input in active.

Could that work: Switch Atem #2 to "Black" with Companion? Then you'd have no physical red button on Atem #2 while the channel is not in use by Atem #1

This was just brilliant - Thank you - I have an ISO & PRO - and intend to get the Extreem ISO but just messing around with Companion really solved a problem especially since we are based in Africa and getting the latest gear on time takes a "little" longer
I've had my studio setup this way with an ATEM Mini Pro and an ATEM Mini for about a month and it's awesome! When I upgraded to the Pro I wondered what I was going to do with my original mini and my brain instantly said, "use it as extra inputs Michael." haha Loved how easy it was to setup the Companion app to run the Marcos and switch the inputs. I call my primary, ATEM Master, and the secondary, ATEM Slave. Great walkthrough Joseph!
Great video! I already use the Stream Deck and Companion software to control my ATEM Mini. I have an ATEM Extreme ISO on order, so I will definitely be trying this out. You showed me how to use the mobile interface on the iPad and iPhone! Thanks again, and keep the videos coming!
Companion is amazing. I use it along with VICREO Listener plugin to control my Stream Deck when using Zoom (to switch backgrounds / cameras on the ATEM as well as mute / turn on/off video and a few other Zoom options).
I would suggest to use video clips and title overlays from the pro and use the mini for cameras as it could get a bit messy with overlays and graphics coming in from the second device.
Companion is great, but you may want to change how you wire 2 Atems together. If you make the Mini the first device and feed the HDMI out into the first channel of the second device, then you take advantage of the low latency ability of the channel one electronics (intended for gaming), this also allows any source on the mini to be a PIP source in the second unit without having to do any configuration. Another benefit is the ability to have 2 concurrent PIP windows, but you have to do some configuration (directly or in companion) to make it a flexible solution.
@@photojoseph It makes a difference when you mix audio sources from both of the Atems as each introduces it's own latency and it's hard to compensate for it if you don't use this feature. Added benefits include retaining the Multi-View, four audio inputs, direct webcam out for one of the units as a back channel if you keep all your main presenter cams there as well.
Enjoyed the video. After receiving my mini pro, I added a low cost 16 port HDMI switch which I use for my amateur radio (ham) digital ATV station. The HDMI switch does have a LAN/remote control so anxious to see if the Bitfocus Companion software may be use with it. I have not found any sources that won't work with the mini pro using HDMI or SDI to HDMI converters.

@PhotoJoseph Thanks for creating the video. I had come up with a similar solution several months ago but I will say yours is more elegant. You also showed me a few things to look at turning up in companion. I am using the StreamDeckXL which makes talking to multi ATEM's a little easier.
The ISO will only record what happens on itself, not on the other unit. There’s no communication between the two. If you need that level of functionality then I think the Extreme ISO is in your future!
Can it setup lower thirds when you switch to them let's say camera on needs a name on it and camera 2 needs a different name. Or is this done with a macro? I'm looking to buy one but my footage will need race car driver names on the video I cut to
How I’d tackle this: - Add a video input from either OBS or QLab to the ATEM, with a green upper two thirds - Display that as Picture in Picture, but set to full screen, and add a chroma key in the ATEM software to remove the green upper thirds - Set up macros in the ATEM to switch to Cam1 and display video input in full screen PIP - Use Companion to make 1 button that runs the macro and triggers the appropriate graphic in OBS or QLab (both can receive OSC triggers from Companion)
@@speedwaycarcams In which case you can still do my suggestion, just without outputting OBS into the atem: - Set your OBS scenes to include the atem and graphic - Ignore the macro and PIP - Set companion to change ATEM program camera selection and change the OBS scene to the correct graphic at the same time
Macros would absolutely work. You set up two lower thirds as graphics, and then a macro loads input 1 and graphic 1, and another macro loads input 2 and graphic 2. Super easy! I'm actually going to be recording a series of short tips on ATEM and this will be one of the first ones to go out. It gets asked a lot!
Great video, thanks! What happens if you open the multiview output on the ATEM Mini Pro ISO? It doesn't show all 7 sources probably, or does it? What is the best way to view all sources in this setup with 2 mixers? I ordered a ATEM SDI Pro Iso recently and think an additional ATEM SDI might be an option. Maybe with additional HDMI to SDI bidirectional converters for my pockets I could use a monitor with multible HDMI inputs while I feed the SDI signals into the mixers.
Can I use a scenario when two ATEM Minis controlled simultaneously to have two different HDMI outputs? They would have same inputs, each through a HDMI splitter.
I don’t… I suppose I should. But to use it load the input you want to transition to into preview, choose your transition, and press AUTO to activate it.
I understand how all this works but I don't understand one thing.... How are you switching to different Cameras/Feeds when there aren't any HDMI's connected to the Switchers? I get that the Ethernet is somehow bringing them in but How? Do you have a video for that?
Now that Black Magic have released the pocket cinema 6k Pro with built in ND filters, I wonder if Panasonic will do the same with their GH6 which will hopefully be announced soon!
You can do the same with the preview buttons and control it via the elgato streamdeck. Here you can use macros for cut und auto. As this is network based it works any pc in the same ip-area
I haven’t used the stream deck to control the ATEM directly; only via Companion. Does the stream deck have a dedicated ATEM software module? Either way, the stream deck costs $$ while Companion is free. So I started there.
@@photojoseph The stream deck supports companion and many other apps, included h2r. You can tell by the buttons-colour the state (ie cam2 green for preview) and control any macros of the atem and toggle a downstreamkey as well. It is also useful for editing software like resolve. if you're bring your audio in via the 3.5mm input from a mic or mixer, then just send it to the primary ATEM. But remember audio can come from each camera via HDMI. Just depends on what you're doing.

No. It only has one USB port, and that can be used for either recording to a connected drive, or feeding into a computer. But not both. It's a host/guest protocol switch. The Extreme however has two USB ports so it can do both.

Question, will you get iso files for all seven inputs? When I take the project into resolve will it create a multicam clip with all 7 of my feeds? Also will all 7 feeds show up on the monitor?
No… the ISO will only record what’s happening on the ISO. The ISO’s Multiview will show whatever is feeding into CAM 4, but it can’t see what’s on the other ATEM.

Thank you Joseph, before I didn't really know what companion was really for and how powerful it is. As I saw that you can bring back a status to a mobile device it raises a question for me. Is it possible to send send the status of something to multiple mobile phones in an "read only" mode? I mean can I build a tally system with it and send the information which cam is in preview and which on program to another smart phone? I have a few old Android phones and could mount one on each camera, would that work?
Instead of connecting two ATEM Minis in series to a computer, I want to connect two ATEM Minis in parallel to the same computer through two separate USB ports. My computer only has 1 USB Type C port and 3 USB 3 Type A ports. In this scenario, can I use any combination of USB Type C and USB 3 Type A ports to plugin the ATEM Minis into my computer? I may need the ATEM Control Software to control the audio. Will the ATEM Control Software freak out at the presence of two ATEM Minis being plugged into the same PC? If this scenario can work, will the OBS Software recognize the two ATEM Minis as separate video inputs and have reasonable video quality for streaming?

Combing two ATEM extremes would work yes. As far as controlling through mixeffext; I’m not sure if you’d need two iPads if you also use Companion. Followed your intstructions and got the two switchers hooked up. Got to the companion section but the Atem set up software is only recognising the ISO and not the second Mini. I have the ISO connected to my Macbook Air using the USBc output on the ISO. I have nothing coming from the Mini other than the output into the ISO, any tips? Thanks for your great content.
@@algarveamplified start with the ATEM software. If one isn’t showing up on the network then connect it to usb so you can check the network settings. Make sure each has a unique IP address and both are visible in the ATEM software. Then you can add them to companion.
No, because even if you had two Pro/Pro ISOs, you’d be using the only HDMI out of the second one as the Program out. You would be able to see what it’s set to in input 4 of the multiview on the main ATEM though. Just not all of them at once.

Welcome, Artur! I'm pretty sure this lens was shot on a 24-105 zoom, so I really couldn't ell you the exact focal length. Probably somewhere between 50 and 80mm though.
!QUESTION!: Is there a way to give the Atem Mini the same features as the ISO? I would rather not spend 500 bucks on an ISO when the mini is 160 used just to be able to record each stream individually if there is a work around. Thanks
You can record in-camera (assuming your cameras are capable of outputting HDMI and recording internally simultaneously), or you could insert a recorder between each camera and the ATEM, but those are about $500 each, at least. Either way you wont have the switching data recorded. And don’t forget the live streaming encoder. Stand alone ones are at least a couple hundred bucks. So you see… the ISO models are a bargain.

That's basically what I'm doing here. A common switch takes a long time to switch, because it has to resync every time you change inputs, and the image usually glitches when you do it.

oh wow… ok I’d heard that Windows could do that before but I don’t use a PC anywhere. Interesting! Still would require separate controls and you couldn’t build a macro that would work across both interfaces at once, although this is still interesting. I’ll have to try it on my Mac by just duplicating the app; I am often switching between two ATEMs so that would make things easier! Great video thank you. I'm actually in this exact position having just ordered an Atem Mini to be an extra feed for my ISO. I'm deliberating selling all to switch to the Extreme as the problem I'm having which I'd hope you'd touch on is I cannot see the Atem mini on the network with the ISO connected. I think the Mini is lacking the ability to change the IP address but might be wrong. Noticing a lot of people experiencing this leaving the extreme the only logical answer. Would love to hear if you have a simple solution..
That's odd… by default the ATEMs are set to DHCP so they should just grab an available IP address, and both be visible in the ATEM Setup app. Are you not seeing both in there? What you can do (what I've done), if you have control of the network, is assign an IP address to the hardware based off its MAC address, so it always has the same IP. That doesn't matter for what you're doing, but in practice it's helpful for knowing where things are on the network, especially for troubleshooting. But again… not necessary for what you're doing. If you can only see one ATEM at a time in the ATEM Setup app, then that sounds like an odd network issue. Maybe a reboot of your router is all that's needed?
The original ATEM Mini doesn't support DHCP, so you need to manually set the IP address to something that is on your network but unused by anything else. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO does support DHCP, so that will get an IP address from your router - however, it's best to set this manually too so that it doesn't change at an inconvenient time...
And you are correct! It'd been so long since I set this up that I forgot that the original Mini does not have DHCP. So yeah, you need to set that up manually. Also 100% agreed that it's best to have a fixed IP regardless. I assign IP addresses to my hardware via MAC address in my router, and the way the hardware is still on DHCP but it picks up the assigned address. Makes it easier to manage the addresses and not accidentally assigned the same IP to two pieces of hardware.
I have a Atem Mini pro that I use in my corporate keynote 3 camera presentations that I do. I am thinking about ordering the extreme in order to get a high resolution copy of the presentation. Because the usbc port is already being utilized by zoom my current setup won’t work. Would just another Atem accomplished what I want to do? Thanks
No. You would need that second USB port. Or, here's another trick which I'll do a video on soon… since you have the Pro, if you're not already using the built-in streaming encoder to stream to TH-cam or wherever, then buy a Streaming Bridge geni.us/ATEMbridge and an HDMI to USB converter, and stream to your local bridge from the ATEM, looping that back in as a webcam.
I’m not sure if I missed it but if I’m using two Pro ISOs, would I lose the ability to have it recorded on an SSD drive as one project for Davinci Resolve? Thanks.
hello, connecting atem mini with atem mini pro does not have audio delay different from one to the other? or the two work perfectly without delay with each other, can I adjust the audio in the Obs and there will be no difference between them?
But you can… that’s what it’s designed for! Stream to TH-cam, Facebook etc., via the built-in encoder. I am guessing you’re streaming from OBS or something, getting the signal via the USB port?
Ah, ok. If you’re using zoom, that’s not “streaming”, that’s “webcam”. There is a way but it requires more hardware. Use the ATEM’s stream capability to stream to a Bridge, and feed that Bridge back into your computer with an HDMI to USB converter.

Sure but the ISO can only record what comes into the HDMI ports, so the one that captures the connected Mini Pro will only have whatever it’s currently sending.
Thanks that's a great tip Joseph. I thought you were about to suggest plugging in an HDMI switcher to one of the inputs. This would also allow 7 inputs total (for a 4 port switcher), but it's nowhere near as elegant as this one. The only caveat is that you need to have the hardware of course. I'm not even sure if using an HDMI switcher on one of the Atem inputs would work, as perhaps it would fool the Atem into thinking the line had gone dead, when it switches. Anyone tried this? That being the case, although it's a far cheaper option, you'd always want all the inputs to the HDMI switcher to be from sources that you'd never want to switch between live. So this could be alternative views from the same location, or perhaps inputs from different video feeds (e.g. a phone containing program title slides, and a tablet with some video clips)

Sounds like the ATEM isn't talking to the network. Connect via USB-C to get it set up; that allows you to see everything regardless of the network connection.
Love it! I might be incorrect but wouldn’t you want to switch the order of the MINI and ISO companion commands so that in the case of packet loss you don’t accidentally select whatever was last sent to 4-7? Also is there a visible couple of frames during the pre-switch between actions in the current layout you exemplified?
I set the order the way I’d do it manually. You could add a slight delay in between commands (I’d add a full frame delay, so if 30fps then 1/30s or 33+ ms delay) to be safe, and I almost did that in the demo, but in testing I never saw a glitch so left it out.
I'm pretty sure the new SDI models have no HDMI outputs, so you'd need an SDI to HDMI converter, but honestly I'd recommend buying an Extreme model instead, and if you still need to bring in a mix of SDI and HDMI, just use the cheap BMD 3G converters. They're only $45 each, I believe.

Biggest issue with this is the cameras on the sub-switcher will be out of sync with the other 3 because you're going through two scalers/switchers. I did this years ago with two original Television Studio models and it just isn't practical. You also can't do dissolves, you'd need some logic between the buttons and Minis to make that work, and even then it's not ideal. There's no proper multi view as well, so again, usability drops. If you need more inputs, just get a bigger switcher, you won't regret it.
There’s no appreciable additional delay when stacking switchers. Someone pointed out that the input from the second AREM should be on input 1 as it has a “direct” mode for low latency productions but I’ve never detected a difference between the modes. Anyway the HDMI delay hit is taken in the camera. There really should be no noticeable delay. The old TV Studio model is very old and quite different tech.
@@photojoseph There is more delay on the camera outputs, yes, but the switchers introduce at least a frame or 2 as well. If anything it'll be worse with the Minis than the older models since they have full scalers and not just frame syncs. Anyway, if you don't see the sync issues then you don't see them, but they are there. Do a clap test with two identical monitors, one on the first ATEM and one on the second, you'll see it.
@@multicamzilla4669 fair enough. I assume you’ve done this test on two ATEM Mini models? Anyway this video isn’t suggesting this is better than buying a bigger switcher. It’s offering a solution to more cheaply get more inputs.

Fair enough! If you have the option then that's definitely a better route. But a lot of people don't want to or can't spend the money, so this is a pretty cool alternative.
ISO is NOT ISO! Please help us as a community. The ISO recordings are only Video ISOs!! The audio is totally corrupted, as all ISO recordings have Program mixed audio tracks. What you have to do is go into the Audio ISO folder to find the, let's say CAM 3 audio. The problem is is that there is no easy way to re-sync the ISO audio with the ISO video clip because as the audio track on the ISO video recording does not have the same waveform to referent to, because it is corrupted as a program audio mix. What's up with that? and can you tell us all how to fix this terrible oversight by Black Magic?
@@photojoseph I did just get off the phone with BM support and what I said is true. The ISO video files do not have discreet audio. They all have mixed program audio where as the "Audio Source Files" folder does have discreet audio tracks for each input. Where I was wrong was my panic of syncing them. They are of course perfectly trimmed to the timeline length so re-syncing them was not the issue that I thought it was. That said, unless I am missing something it does seem like an unnecessary step as posed to just having each ISO video file have it's own discreet audio. Anyway, I wanted to circle back and clarify since you took the time to reply. I also neglected to thank you for your countless hours of amazing content. Your videos have helped make me a better professional. If you ever find yourself in the upstate Albany NY area, let me know, I'll buy you a lunch!!! Until then...
You gotta change the 4-7 sequence around so it selects the upstream source 1st before selecting input 4 to stop the occasional flashframe that may occur if the commands go out at a frame boundary.

is it possible to use USB-C out from mini to ATEM mini. We have the output port of mini not working. thinking of a way around to get a an HDMI out. Any suggestions?

I did it in the same way. Initially i bought a mini, used it a couple of months and then i bougth the iso. I had the option of selling the mini, but i solved my doubt making a daisy chain and use El gato. Good explanation to tune my configuration. Thank you!,

In regards to having 2 red buttons, I did not find a way to disable the color but you could add instance feedback to the 3 buttons 1,2 and 3 actions that would turn the ATEM 4-7 buttons to preview. You would end up with only one red button with the button on the ATEM 4-7 being green. Maybe not the cleanest way, but would make it easier to quickly figure out which input in active.

I've had my studio setup this way with an ATEM Mini Pro and an ATEM Mini for about a month and it's awesome! When I upgraded to the Pro I wondered what I was going to do with my original mini and my brain instantly said, "use it as extra inputs Michael." haha Loved how easy it was to setup the Companion app to run the Marcos and switch the inputs. I call my primary, ATEM Master, and the secondary, ATEM Slave. Great walkthrough Joseph!

Companion is amazing. I use it along with VICREO Listener plugin to control my Stream Deck when using Zoom (to switch backgrounds / cameras on the ATEM as well as mute / turn on/off video and a few other Zoom options).
Haven’t seen VICREO… so that’s just to put Companion on the Stream Deck?
I would suggest to use video clips and title overlays from the pro and use the mini for cameras as it could get a bit messy with overlays and graphics coming in from the second device.
Absolutely
Companion is great, but you may want to change how you wire 2 Atems together. If you make the Mini the first device and feed the HDMI out into the first channel of the second device, then you take advantage of the low latency ability of the channel one electronics (intended for gaming), this also allows any source on the mini to be a PIP source in the second unit without having to do any configuration. Another benefit is the ability to have 2 concurrent PIP windows, but you have to do some configuration (directly or in companion) to make it a flexible solution.
Nice. I wonder if that low latency would make any difference for normal switching.
@@photojoseph It makes a difference when you mix audio sources from both of the Atems as each introduces it's own latency and it's hard to compensate for it if you don't use this feature. Added benefits include retaining the Multi-View, four audio inputs, direct webcam out for one of the units as a back channel if you keep all your main presenter cams there as well.

Enjoyed the video. After receiving my mini pro, I added a low cost 16 port HDMI switch which I use for my amateur radio (ham) digital ATV station. The HDMI switch does have a LAN/remote control so anxious to see if the Bitfocus Companion software may be use with it. I have not found any sources that won't work with the mini pro using HDMI or SDI to HDMI converters.

The ISO will only record what happens on itself, not on the other unit. There’s no communication between the two. If you need that level of functionality then I think the Extreme ISO is in your future!
What happens in regards to recording. If these 2 are connected will the iso record all the inputs?
Can it setup lower thirds when you switch to them let's say camera on needs a name on it and camera 2 needs a different name. Or is this done with a macro? I'm looking to buy one but my footage will need race car driver names on the video I cut to
How I’d tackle this:
- Add a video input from either OBS or QLab to the ATEM, with a green upper two thirds
- Display that as Picture in Picture, but set to full screen, and add a chroma key in the ATEM software to remove the green upper thirds
- Set up macros in the ATEM to switch to Cam1 and display video input in full screen PIP
- Use Companion to make 1 button that runs the macro and triggers the appropriate graphic in OBS or QLab (both can receive OSC triggers from Companion)

@@speedwaycarcams In which case you can still do my suggestion, just without outputting OBS into the atem:
- Set your OBS scenes to include the atem and graphic
- Ignore the macro and PIP
- Set companion to change ATEM program camera selection and change the OBS scene to the correct graphic at the same time
Macros would absolutely work. You set up two lower thirds as graphics, and then a macro loads input 1 and graphic 1, and another macro loads input 2 and graphic 2. Super easy! I'm actually going to be recording a series of short tips on ATEM and this will be one of the first ones to go out. It gets asked a lot!

Great video, thanks! What happens if you open the multiview output on the ATEM Mini Pro ISO? It doesn't show all 7 sources probably, or does it? What is the best way to view all sources in this setup with 2 mixers? I ordered a ATEM SDI Pro Iso recently and think an additional ATEM SDI might be an option. Maybe with additional HDMI to SDI bidirectional converters for my pockets I could use a monitor with multible HDMI inputs while I feed the SDI signals into the mixers.
Can I use a scenario when two ATEM Minis controlled simultaneously to have two different HDMI outputs? They would have same inputs, each through a HDMI splitter.

Definitely does not need to be a Mac. Some networks are configured to separate the wifi from the wired network; could that be an issue?
I understand how all this works but I don't understand one thing.... How are you switching to different Cameras/Feeds when there aren't any HDMI's connected to the Switchers? I get that the Ethernet is somehow bringing them in but How? Do you have a video for that?
The ATEM doesn't care if there's anything plugged into the input or not. It loads CAM 1 whether there's anything plugged into it or not.
Now that Black Magic have released the pocket cinema 6k Pro with built in ND filters, I wonder if Panasonic will do the same with their GH6 which will hopefully be announced soon!
Built in ND is awesome. The physical size (and shape) of that camera allows it… I wouldn't count on it on a camera as small as a GH5 though.
Well rumour is there will be 3 versions of the GH6.

You can do the same with the preview buttons and control it via the elgato streamdeck. Here you can use macros for cut und auto. As this is network based it works any pc in the same ip-area
I haven’t used the stream deck to control the ATEM directly; only via Companion. Does the stream deck have a dedicated ATEM software module? Either way, the stream deck costs $$ while Companion is free. So I started there.
@@photojoseph The stream deck supports companion and many other apps, included h2r. You can tell by the buttons-colour the state (ie cam2 green for preview) and control any macros of the atem and toggle a downstreamkey as well. It is also useful for editing software like resolve. Network has nothing to go with audio but if you don’t have both on the network then you can’t build any chording of commands (i.e. 4+1)

if you're bring your audio in via the 3.5mm input from a mic or mixer, then just send it to the primary ATEM. But remember audio can come from each camera via HDMI. Just depends on what you're doing.

I am using ATEM mini pro ISO and ATEM mini pro. I want to use these two in dual. But the problem is, at ATEM mini pro ISO, I want use usb ‘c’ type to record and in ISO pro, I want to connect the computer- is it able?
No. It only has one USB port, and that can be used for either recording to a connected drive, or feeding into a computer. But not both. It's a host/guest protocol switch. The Extreme however has two USB ports so it can do both.

Question, will you get iso files for all seven inputs? When I take the project into resolve will it create a multicam clip with all 7 of my feeds? Also will all 7 feeds show up on the monitor?
No… the ISO will only record what’s happening on the ISO. The ISO’s Multiview will show whatever is feeding into CAM 4, but it can’t see what’s on the other ATEM.

Thank you Joseph, before I didn't really know what companion was really for and how powerful it is. As I saw that you can bring back a status to a mobile device it raises a question for me. Is it possible to send send the status of something to multiple mobile phones in an "read only" mode? I mean can I build a tally system with it and send the information which cam is in preview and which on program to another smart phone? I have a few old Android phones and could mount one on each camera, would that work?
Instead of connecting two ATEM Minis in series to a computer, I want to connect two ATEM Minis in parallel to the same computer through two separate USB ports. My computer only has 1 USB Type C port and 3 USB 3 Type A ports. In this scenario, can I use any combination of USB Type C and USB 3 Type A ports to plugin the ATEM Minis into my computer?
I may need the ATEM Control Software to control the audio. Will the ATEM Control Software freak out at the presence of two ATEM Minis being plugged into the same PC? If this scenario can work, will the OBS Software recognize the two ATEM Minis as separate video inputs and have reasonable video quality for streaming?

Combing two ATEM extremes would work yes. As far as controlling through mixeffext; I’m not sure if you’d need two iPads if you also use Companion. Followed your intstructions and got the two switchers hooked up. Got to the companion section but the Atem set up software is only recognising the ISO and not the second Mini. I have the ISO connected to my Macbook Air using the USBc output on the ISO. I have nothing coming from the Mini other than the output into the ISO, any tips? Thanks for your great content.
They both need to be on the network to be used in Companion.

@@algarveamplified start with the ATEM software. If one isn’t showing up on the network then connect it to usb so you can check the network settings. Make sure each has a unique IP address and both are visible in the ATEM software. Then you can add them to companion.

No, because even if you had two Pro/Pro ISOs, you’d be using the only HDMI out of the second one as the Program out. You would be able to see what it’s set to in input 4 of the multiview on the main ATEM though. Just not all of them at once.

Welcome, Artur! I'm pretty sure this lens was shot on a 24-105 zoom, so I really couldn't ell you the exact focal length. Probably somewhere between 50 and 80mm though.

I would rather not spend 500 bucks on an ISO when the mini is 160 used just to be able to record each stream individually if there is a work around. Thanks
You can record in-camera (assuming your cameras are capable of outputting HDMI and recording internally simultaneously), or you could insert a recorder between each camera and the ATEM, but those are about $500 each, at least. Either way you wont have the switching data recorded. And don’t forget the live streaming encoder. Stand alone ones are at least a couple hundred bucks. So you see… the ISO models are a bargain.

You can add a password to access the Companion system, yes. Not to individual pages though.

That's basically what I'm doing here. A common switch takes a long time to switch, because it has to resync every time you change inputs, and the image usually glitches when you do it.

in windows after you open the first instance you shift+right click run as different user and that allows you to have 2 or more instances of BMD software open and working even with 2 sepparate swichers!

Still would require separate controls and you couldn’t build a macro that would work across both interfaces at once, although this is still interesting. Great video thank you. I'm actually in this exact position having just ordered an Atem Mini to be an extra feed for my ISO. I'm deliberating selling all to switch to the Extreme as the problem I'm having which I'd hope you'd touch on is I cannot see the Atem mini on the network with the ISO connected. I think the Mini is lacking the ability to change the IP address but might be wrong. Noticing a lot of people experiencing this leaving the extreme the only logical answer. Would love to hear if you have a simple solution..
That's odd… by default the ATEMs are set to DHCP so they should just grab an available IP address, and both be visible in the ATEM Setup app. Are you not seeing both in there? What you can do (what I've done), if you have control of the network, is assign an IP address to the hardware based off its MAC address, so it always has the same IP. That doesn't matter for what you're doing, but in practice it's helpful for knowing where things are on the network, especially for troubleshooting. But again… not necessary for what you're doing. If you can only see one ATEM at a time in the ATEM Setup app, then that sounds like an odd network issue. Maybe a reboot of your router is all that's needed?
The original ATEM Mini doesn't support DHCP, so you need to manually set the IP address to something that is on your network but unused by anything else. The ATEM Mini Pro ISO does support DHCP, so that will get an IP address from your router - however, it's best to set this manually too so that it doesn't change at an inconvenient time...
And you are correct! It'd been so long since I set this up that I forgot that the original Mini does not have DHCP. So yeah, you need to set that up manually. Also 100% agreed that it's best to have a fixed IP regardless. I assign IP addresses to my hardware via MAC address in my router, and the way the hardware is still on DHCP but it picks up the assigned address. Makes it easier to manage the addresses and not accidentally assigned the same IP to two pieces of hardware.

I have a Atem Mini pro that I use in my corporate keynote 3 camera presentations that I do. I am thinking about ordering the extreme in order to get a high resolution copy of the presentation. Because the usbc port is already being utilized by zoom my current setup won’t work. Would just another Atem accomplished what I want to do?

No. You would need that second USB port. Or, here's another trick which I'll do a video on soon… since you have the Pro, if you're not already using the built-in streaming encoder to stream to TH-cam or wherever, then buy a Streaming Bridge geni.us/ATEMbridge and an HDMI to USB converter, and stream to your local bridge from the ATEM, looping that back in as a webcam.

hello, connecting atem mini with atem mini pro does not have audio delay different from one to the other? or the two work perfectly without delay with each other, can I adjust the audio in the Obs and there will be no difference between them?
Piggybacking doesn’t introduce any noticeable delay, although I didnt measure it. Not sure where OBS comes in in this workflow.

But you can… that’s what it’s designed for! Stream to TH-cam, Facebook etc., via the built-in encoder. I am guessing you’re streaming from OBS or something, getting the signal via the USB port?

Ah, ok. If you’re using zoom, that’s not “streaming”, that’s “webcam”. There is a way but it requires more hardware. Use the ATEM’s stream capability to stream to a Bridge, and feed that Bridge back into your computer with an HDMI to USB converter.

Sure but the ISO can only record what comes into the HDMI ports, so the one that captures the connected Mini Pro will only have whatever it’s currently sending.
Thanks that's a great tip Joseph. I thought you were about to suggest plugging in an HDMI switcher to one of the inputs. This would also allow 7 inputs total (for a 4 port switcher), but it's nowhere near as elegant as this one. The only caveat is that you need to have the hardware of course. I'm not even sure if using an HDMI switcher on one of the Atem inputs would work, as perhaps it would fool the Atem into thinking the line had gone dead, when it switches. Anyone tried this? That being the case, although it's a far cheaper option, you'd always want all the inputs to the HDMI switcher to be from sources that you'd never want to switch between live. So this could be alternative views from the same location, or perhaps inputs from different video feeds (e.g. a phone containing program title slides, and a tablet with some video clips)
It would work; the line doesn’t go “dead”. But you can’t gang actions together with Companion that way.

Sounds like the ATEM isn't talking to the network. Connect via USB-C to get it set up; that allows you to see everything regardless of the network connection.

I might be incorrect but wouldn’t you want to switch the order of the MINI and ISO companion commands so that in the case of packet loss you don’t accidentally select whatever was last sent to 4-7? Also is there a visible couple of frames during the pre-switch between actions in the current layout you exemplified?
I set the order the way I’d do it manually. You could add a slight delay in between commands (I’d add a full frame delay, so if 30fps then 1/30s or 33+ ms delay) to be safe, and I almost did that in the demo, but in testing I never saw a glitch so left it out.

Can I do this with the SDI and HDMI?
I'm pretty sure the new SDI models have no HDMI outputs, so you'd need an SDI to HDMI converter, but honestly I'd recommend buying an Extreme model instead, and if you still need to bring in a mix of SDI and HDMI, just use the cheap BMD 3G converters. They're only $45 each, I believe.
can i use my atem mini iso the same way with roland v1 HD?
Sure: physically. Is the Roland supported by Companion though? Check their website to see! If so, then definitely.

Biggest issue with this is the cameras on the sub-switcher will be out of sync with the other 3 because you're going through two scalers/switchers. I did this years ago with two original Television Studio models and it just isn't practical. You also can't do dissolves, you'd need some logic between the buttons and Minis to make that work, and even then it's not ideal. There's no proper multi view as well, so again, usability drops. If you need more inputs, just get a bigger switcher, you won't regret it.
There’s no appreciable additional delay when stacking switchers. Someone pointed out that the input from the second AREM should be on input 1 as it has a “direct” mode for low latency productions but I’ve never detected a difference between the modes. Anyway the HDMI delay hit is taken in the camera. There really should be no noticeable delay. The old TV Studio model is very old and quite different tech.
@@photojoseph There is more delay on the camera outputs, yes, but the switchers introduce at least a frame or 2 as well. If anything it'll be worse with the Minis than the older models since they have full scalers and not just frame syncs. Anyway, if you don't see the sync issues then you don't see them, but they are there. Do a clap test with two identical monitors, one on the first ATEM and one on the second, you'll see it.

Fair enough! If you have the option then that's definitely a better route. But a lot of people don't want to or can't spend the money, so this is a pretty cool alternative.

Yeah, that I can’t help with unfortunately.
ISO is NOT ISO! Please help us as a community. The ISO recordings are only Video ISOs!! The audio is totally corrupted, as all ISO recordings have Program mixed audio tracks. What you have to do is go into the Audio ISO folder to find the, let's say CAM 3 audio. The problem is is that there is no easy way to re-sync the ISO audio with the ISO video clip because as the audio track on the ISO video recording does not have the same waveform to referent to, because it is corrupted as a program audio mix. What's up with that? and can you tell us all how to fix this terrible oversight by Black Magic?
I have not seen this problem. Please make sure both the ATEM and Resolve are up to date, and report back.
@@photojoseph I did just get off the phone with BM support and what I said is true. The ISO video files do not have discreet audio. They all have mixed program audio where as the "Audio Source Files" folder does have discreet audio tracks for each input. Where I was wrong was my panic of syncing them. They are of course perfectly trimmed to the timeline length so re-syncing them was not the issue that I thought it was. That said, unless I am missing something it does seem like an unnecessary step as posed to just having each ISO video file have it's own discreet audio. Anyway, I wanted to circle back and clarify since you took the time to reply. I also neglected to thank you for your countless hours of amazing content. Your videos have helped make me a better professional. If you ever find yourself in the upstate Albany NY area, let me know, I'll buy you a lunch!!! Until then...

You gotta change the 4-7 sequence around so it selects the upstream source 1st before selecting input 4 to stop the occasional flashframe that may occur if the commands go out at a frame boundary.
