Hi we'll be in NZ in November and we've rented a self contained camper van. Our provider highly recommends we buy the DOC conservation pass, which amounts to 200$ for 2 people for a month. Is it worth it getting this pass? There seems to be a ton of camping options, free and paying that don't require a 200$ pass. So we're really hesitant on buying this pass. What's you're opinion on this?
Thanks for your help and the awesome channel and web page!

    • @NZPocketGuide

Hey Christian - you're right, there is a ton of camping options, especially with a self-contained campervan, where you'll be able to stay in many places for free. Plus, there are some free Department of Conservation campsites and some really cheap ones that probably will not amount to $200 in a month. The pass would be worth it for a year, but not a month :) You're campsite budget will probably go into holiday parks every few days, as you will most likely need to use power sites to recharge the batteries, etc. (Unless you are renting an awesome solar-powered van). Hope that helps, Christian!

Will definitely check it out. Thanks so much. Do you have some advice here please: found some cheap rentals but the reviews are maybe not the best. Do you recommend avoid those and go for the more expensive ones but with good reviews? Also, what about insurance-is it worth it or is just another way to charge extra ? Thanks so much for the help
