  • Unless you have the reflexes of a racing car driver, nailing a bird taking off every time is going to be tricky! Canon has a solution though with their Raw Burst Mode and Pre Shooting functions! In this video Charl will show you how it works and detail a clever little trick to maximise its potential.

Thank you Charl for this video. I have now changed the function on one button on my R7 so it is easy to switch the function off and on!

Thank you so much for this. I knew about this feature for my R7 when I bought it but hadn't activated it yet. I have recently started shooting BIF more often and this (plus the shortcut) will be a big help.

I'm waiting for the R5 Mark II and hope that RAW burst mode will be available in this camera. Hopefully the RAW files will then be written directly to the CF Express card. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy the R5 and try to read the animals in order to capture the right moment every now and then.

Canon is a little late to the party as was Nikon. The only thing that surprises me is that Sony didn't intro this feature. Way to go OLY! Thanks for the vid.

    Charl,
This is a very informative video. Is this possible with the Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera ? if so please do a similar video demonstrating these functions on the Nikon Z8 camera. Thank you.

This is a fantastic technology. this is driving BIF photography and the development of the budget priced telephoto lenses. Crazy and this is a breakthrough for BIR and action photography. The experienced photographer knows how much this takes to get the action shot. This put Olympus back on the market as a "wildlife" system. But it requires a bunch of settings that is often neglected for exposure and speed. So this automatic photography is great, attracting a lot of people to bird photography.

Thanks for this informative video. I just hope, that in the future cameras, Canon will implement pre-shooting in a better way. It's a great function, but currently it is very inconvenient and hard to use. You should be able to toggle this on/off easily while shooting (without the need of looking into the menu), with a single click of a button on camera. The images should also be written normally to the card, as standard RAW files.

@@PangolinWildlife yes I did, Charl's tip is very helpful, however I wish I could switch between shooting modes without going into menu at all.

Nikon also has Pre Burst on the Z8 and Z9 which wasnt mentioned in the Video
. .. My Z7 I had 1 out of 100 keepers but my new Z8 with one outing shot 1234 pics taken >> 98 % Keepers with the 180-600 and I have just begun learning..What a Camera and I am on page ONE in the learning situation
Nikon Z9 and Z8 has a Electronic shutter only = non Obsolete forever (Mechanical Shutter cameras have Limited Shuttercounts) >> Z8 and Z9 are the only cameras with No Mechanical Shutters

Fujifilm has the similar PRE-SHOT ES. Fuji have had it since at least 2019, but not many people know about it. It works really well for wildlife. Once the shutter button is fully pressed it writes Raw / JPG straight to memory (no intermediate step unlike the Canon). Looking forward to using this technique in Chobe in November.

Hi - nice vid, thanks for making it! Pre-shooting is a great setting, but I didn't realise it was new. For example Fujifilm have had it for years (sorry don't know how many). Cheers.

Hopefully in the future they will write all the RAWs to the card so you don't have to extract them in camera or with DPP. The OM-1 does this now as well as lets you select how many pre/post shots you want and at various frame rates. Maybe in the R1??

I'm really missing pre-shooting in R3 and in my R5. I was hoping that, after it was implemented in Canon's lower-end cameras, maybe they will add this with a firmware update for R5, but well... it's Canon, so of course it didn't happen ☹️

Canon Pre-capture is almost ok, really needs a few more options ie time etc, the software using DPP is a pain and selecting in camera also poor. Buffering is a nightmare.

The most important thing is to switch off IS on your lens in this particular case that is waiting for a perched bird to fly.

Yes just got the A9 III - it's a beast. Pre-capture, 120fps RAW with full autofocus, burst mode, composite RAW. Nice thing is they are just normal RAW files, none of this funny extract business required by the Canon.

I haven't watched yet but will when I get home, But from what I see Olympus still has better implementation than Canon one push of a button and your in pro capture, My R7 that I had wasn't like that you had to go into the menu unless I did something wrong, Now Nikon forget about them stupid 11mpix and jpeg only I've never laughed so hard in my life.

@@PangolinWildlife yes I did and it's good like that, I have an R3 and I don't think we'll be seeing a firmware update to add it which is to bad, I also have the Z8 and am waiting for the rumored firmware update to add pre capture raw and if not I'm going all Canon.
