Sabine's Wildlife Video Editing Workflow

- In this video Sabine explains in detail her wildlife video editing workflow using Davinci Resolve (which is her editing program of choice). This editing workflow will also work with other programs too and will help you create a more fluid and refined wildlife video from your footage.

Although Sabine is using DaVinci Resolve in this tutorial the principle of the wildlife video editing process will be the same on other programs. Davinci Resolve is very powerful and we suggest you give it a try as not only does it work very well but its free too! (and no we are not sponsored by Davinci Resolve..we are just fans of what they do!)

Starting with advice on how to select the best clips sabine will then talk you through various techniques she uses to edit the component into a fluid narrative including several techniques to transition between clips as well as how to chose the right music for your video.

Do you find you are taking more video these days? When you do what software are you using to process it?
I have used Final Cut Pro in the past, but have decided to try Davinci Resolve for my next video. So this tutorial is of great interest to me. I would love for Sabine to show more tips for this editing tool.
As a relatively beginner (backyard) wildlife hobbyist who finds himself a bit overwhelmed with the amount of footage he's collected over the recent past, I've been searching for this type of content but haven't quite found something that hits the nail right on the head. This video, by far, is the best and most comprehensive workflow tutorial I have come across thus far with regard to editing wildlife footage. Sub'ed and look forward to exploring other content on the channel, thank you! 🐿
Just love the video editing tutorial. We need more such videos. As I see they are not much tutorial especially for editing wildlife footages. Please have more such videos in future on audio mixing, color grading effects, narrative documentary etc.

I'm so excited to be coming to Pangolin Chobe Safari in April! That's just around the corner, and I look forward to meeting you Sabine, and absorbing the knowledge you have to offer. My goal is to film more video this trip using my mirrorless Nikon Z8 instead of just using my cell phone.

I was looking for a video that could help me do a video of my next safari. I just found it. Thank you, Sabine.
Another method that tends to work well for transitions is to match panning movement. If shot 1 has the camera panning from left to right it helps if shot 2 continues the pan in the same direction at about the same speed. I also use DaVinci Resolve.

Sabine, you have a wonderful way of explaining complex things in a very structured and easy-to-understand way. I am using DVR for a while to post travel videos on our South America trips - I also chaged from Premiere Pro to DVR and have never regretted doing so.

Great video Sabine. Just one thing that may be of use though when choosing shots in DaVinci is to use stacked timelines and then you can drag, or copy and paste the shots from timeline to timeline.

Excellent advice - thank you - my main issue is with the editing software - I find most to be very complex and beyond my IT capabilities. I do not have a problem getting good footage ( a special one or two each trip to the bush) but being able to exclude external sounds and introduce the actual sound of the animals is a challenge. I
like the way you introduce sounds and even compile different sounds at the end of this video ! It takes a special talent to achieve this - Like having an Irish Coffee at the end of a great meal !

A superb introduction to not just the mechanics of video editing but also to the story-telling possibilities of thoughtfully edited video. Disclaimer-- I come at this first as a video shooter and editor moving back toward stills as I now only own hybrid cameras as opposed to my larger digital cinema cameras. Resolve is massive and it could be a lifetime learning project. I am not a VFX person nor an audio expert so I concentrate on editing and color grading, in which I do have some degree of expertise. One thing that I will add is that the Cut page in Resolve can be very useful with the purchase of the Resolve Speed Editor. Takes me back to the days of editing reel to reel tape (yes, I'm old). This is a great little tool for quick edits and timeline construction that then can be refined with all of the methods Sabine outlined. I like shooting my wildlife video in 4K HDR (the HLG3 profile in Sony is what I've found best) and grade on a professionally-calibrated LG HDR OLED TV fed from a Blackmagic card. I keep UI on my 34" BenQ and scopes on an ancient Dell monitor. Three things-- I hope that photo guides will advise guests not to talk when someone is rolling footage (I honestly had some phenomenal ambient audio totally ruined by talkative guests who despite my polite pleas would not be quiet). Second-- While mastering editing, branch out into the Color page. So many good basic color grading tutorials out there and it is not as daunting as you might think. Third - The deliver page will upload your video directly to TH-cam, Vimeo and other sites. Oh-- and for an audio track I used the Shinde Footsteps staff singing for us. Thank you so much for a fantastic and informative video. I'm editing in Davinci Resolve version 15 and that's because my files are MXF files. I film with a Sony FS7 camera. Unfortunately, you can't upload MXF files to the Davinci 18 free version. However, I will buy the Davinci 18 in the future. Hi Sabine. I have used Resolve a little several years ago but even so I found it tricky to follow exactly what you were doing. While the concept of what you were doing was easy to follow replicating the actual task I found more difficult. Fortunately Resolve comes with its own manual and training and, together with your video I was able to get back up to speed. You provided some great tips for short cuts that I wasn't aware of. Looking forward to seeing more.

I am an amateur wildlife photographer
I admire the quality of your photos and videos.
I would like to ask you 3 questions about this episode:
-You film with a telephoto lens and with a wide aperture, it seems, do you use an ND filter to respect the frame rate?
-Do you film in Log or standard format?
-When you film, do you devote yourself only to video or to photos as well?

Hello Jean, thank you for the valid questions. I do mostly film wide open but do not own a filter so even though it is against the rules, I increase the shutter speed until the exposure is right. Since I mostly slow the footage it still looks acceptable. But if I‘d do it more often and solely video I would use a filter and adhere to the rule of shutter speed being double the frame rate.
I do not film in log since I still haven‘t mastered colour grading.
When I film, I mostly devote myself to video only as it becomes messy when doing stills as well. Although there is times when I still can‘t help myself.

Thank you Sabine, for this interesting video editing. Do you use video stabilisation or cropping the video in DaVinci Resolve?
Excellent video Sabine! Most of my videos are from scuba diving, though been taking more wildlife since I like capturing the motion and behavior that is sometimes not easy with still shots. My bigest issue is processing the colors correctly especially from scuba diving. I have struggled to find a good video editor because of my color issues. I have tried Davinci, Capcut, iMovie and Adobe Rush. They all have their pros and cons. I look forward to more of your videos!

Just one question- when you mentioned about adding photos to the clip, could those be animated somehow ?
I've been 3 times on safari so far and noticed that lots of actions are better to be recorded on a video to show the real moment . So I will give it a try.
After making couple of videos I found the sound-fit-to-video the most difficult part. You already did trims all the clips, and then when it comes to sync music in some parts, it's starting all over 😆Also I constantly tend to make long videos instead of shorter ones, this is I need to change.
