My childhood was a nightmare. My father was a great man, but he died when I was 5. Idiots and morons took over raising me and my life was full of screaming and beatings. We didn't have cable TV, but we were lucky to have a TV I guess. For a few hours on Sunday starting with this song things were good. When I hear this song now it almost brings me to tears.
Same for me brother…same for me. I remember my mom leaving to stay with one of those morons, no heat, she smoked like a train, nothing to eat, but she had a small black and white TV…and I was just glued to it..watching all the NFL stuff..NFL 79 and the NFL today. Bryant Gumbal and Brent Mustburger spoke to me…I knew there must be a better way.
Sorry to hear about your childhood. It’s amazing how songs like this can bring us back to bright spots in our past. I hope things are going better for you now.
Wow…this was the best theme ever. Takes me back to Sunday afternoons after coming home from church and watching the game with my father. The best times.
This takes me back to my youth...makes me feel nostalgic and wistful for my dear old Dad who died just 6 months after Super Bowl XII was played in 1978. Hearing this theme makes me think of classic CBS and Archie Bunker...
Me too buddy. Sorry about your dad. My father just passed away 3 weeks ago, 89 years, went to high school with bud grant and was a Vikings fan all his life. And in all that time NO SUPER BOWL WINS. Now I’m 52 and starting to wonder if I will ever see the Vikings win a super bowl. Haha.
Oh my goodness. I couldn't wait for Sundays so I could watch my team play. When Sundays came the time seem to drag on forever... I was like come on 1 O'clock get here already!!! You are looking live at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh... that gave me goosebumps!!
"You are looking live at Soilder Field in Chicago.Where the Chicago Bears led by one of the game's best runners,Walter Payton taking on the 'Purple Gang' of the Minnesota Vikings"
"You are looking live at a sold out Giants stadium in the Meadowland, where coming up today the upstart Giants take on the division leading Dallas Cowboys"
Wow! How I loved this ‘NFL Today’ theme music on CBS! I remember Brent Musberger, Irv Cross, Phyllis George and Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder on ‘The NFL Today’. I say bring this theme back now!
Memories of many a Sunday morning in Los Angeles watching this before church and the Rams game...Brent,Irv,Phyllis,Jayne,Jimmy the Greek,Jack,Don the voice over guy...
I will never be able to listen to this again without thinking of Phyllis George. A pioneer, trailblazer. She paved the way for other women to follow. She didn't just open doors, she knocked down the wall. Women in sports owe her a huge debt. They had mentors where she had none. She did it without a map and did it well. RIP Phyllis George A big part of my childhood Sunday afternoons. Condolences to her family and friends.
You are looking live at the Pontiac Silverdome. Where rookie sensation Billy Sims, leads a surprising Detroit Lions team into the second half of the season!
It was the same way with me here in South Carolina-- The NFL Today at 12:30, and then the action starting at 1 (nowadays, The NFL Today is at noon, with the action starting at the same time as before).
This is best football theme of all time. Pregame shows and the games themselves. It is also the best pregame show of all time. Sure I feel sorry to what happened to a lot of the players but the era of the Steelers and Raiders was what football was all about. It was just a perfect game then. ESPN didn't exist. You didn't get that many games. The highlights were hard to find. Who didn't wait for halftime of Monday Night for Howard to show you what you missed.
You are looking live at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas as the first place Dallas Cowboys take on the Washington Redskins in a pivotal NFC East match up...
Happy retirement to you Brent Musburger. I still miss seeing him on The NFL Today...he was the best pre0game/post-game studio anchor the business ever had.
Brings back so many good memories of Sunday afternoons with my old man in the den. He’s drink his Olympia beers and smoke his Newports. What an orchestral masterpiece - trombones flutes and the whole package!
Alcoha presents fantastic finishes.....with two minutes left in the game and the Cowboys down by ten Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach brings the Cowboys back........the good ol days!!!!
After much searching, I finally found this theme. I love it! It has the kind of adrenalin rush that not a lot of TV sports themes have today. "Horizontal Hold"...and most any background music by the legendary Sam Spence....I'm in football highlight heaven!
This music was one of my relatively few pleasant memories of regular-season football Sundays in the late '70s, having grown up watching the Detroit Lions. (I usually didn't tune in on the weeks the Lions were blacked out at home, of which there were many.)
The 1978 intro was the best, even though it is the same music, I liked the clips they showed, The sound of the crowd cheering, The TV camera turning towards your TV screen and the CBS "eye" logo shutter opening, Ron Jaworski calling plays, clips of tackles being made with the noises players made being tackled and doing the tackling, Walter Payton leaping over the players for a goal line touchdown, Fran Tarkington throwing the football and the camera following it's flight, Ed Jones' sack on Craig Morton during SB XII (replacing the clip of Cliff Branch getting his feet taken out from under him during an reception... when real football was being played lol!!), the Cowboys player being stepped on, Willie Brown"s interception TD return during SB XI, flashes to the reel to reel tape, the engineer flipping the switch to turn on the studio lights, the announcers first and last names appearing on the screen in sync with the horns in the music, the engineer flipping the switch to turn on the studio lights and of course " The NFL today on CBS sports brought to you by Wang, Tuborg Gold Beer, etc" My eyes well with tears as I'm typing this, (damn I had a good childhood) This intro was on you tube up to two years ago and I would play it every Sunday at 1pm EDT during football season. I would show it to younger sports fans and proudly say, this is how football came on back in the day. I think they should bring this music back and put in clips of today's players. At least the show is still broadcast from Studio 43.
So Happy I witness the golden age of football of the 70s and shows like this. Monday Night Football was a much watch with Howard Cosell and team. The Monday Night Football Halftime Highlights was Awesome and before all of the ESPN shows etc. Grew up as a kid with the George Michael's Sports Machine too!!! Lets not forget College Football and Basketball was so thrilling.. It was an AWESOME time in Sports.
I remember this on Sundays, so uplifting ! To hear as a kid ! Such a wonderful cast , I was like ten and Jimmy was like that fun uncle. I had a massive crush on Phyliss George and the whole cast were like another family ! That just had a great time together.
Loved how in 1977 jimmy the Greek segment would always be followed by this Muriel Cigar commercial with Susan Anton still one of the sexiest commercials ever made
You Are Looking LIVE at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. As the hometown Buccaneers will take on The Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. Here on CBS...
This is exactly what I needed to edit together a great ringtone of this classic opener. Fantastic. Another TH-cam contributor uploaded the entire piece, too.
On Super Bowl Sunday, CBS aired a retrospective on The NFL Today called You Are Looking Live! Named for the phrase Brent Musberger used when the camera caught the eye of a stadium. That theme opened and closed the special which included stories of the show's beginning and some of the tumult about it involving the late Jimmy "The Greek." Of the original 5 studio hosts, Jayne Kennedy and Brent are still with us.
It was awesome and Jayne looks amazing. I felt tears coming on. Like I was transported back in time watching as a kid again. I hope all of you were able to see it. I'm glad Brent didn't have to do this alone but saddened that there are only 2 of them left. RIP Jimmy, Phyllis and Irv. Greatest pregame team of all.
The NFL Today is brought to you by Budweiser, The King of Beers. Step up to the King. And your local FORD dealers. Have you driven a FORD today. and now from CBS Sports Control. Here's Brent Musberger.
This theme was actually used in 1975, and possibly 1974, too. Memories of CBS's Don Robertson, Brent Musberger, Jack Whitaker, and Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, MN...
I find the facial expressions of the late Phyllis George and the very much alive Brent Musburger in this photo fascinating. I think someone off-camera (obviously), like the stage mgr. or the cameraman (and it WAS a man in that era), has said something or has joked something off-color or sexist (or both). Musburger seems to be enjoying whatever is being said. Ms. George, on the other hand, via her facial expression, is definitely saying "Really? Really?" She's not masking her disdain.

IMO Jimmy "the Greek" Snyder was CBS answer to Howard Cosell, somebody controversial you talk about at the Water Cooler on Monday Morning.
one of the best nfl theme songs ever
Also check out NBC 1973 NFL opening.
And, NFL on CBS 1981-1986.
And, Monday Night Football 1978 opening. Awesome stuff.
And also Brent's trademark, You are looking live at...

Lol at "Voiceover Guy!"
That would be Don Robertson, the longtime voice-over announcer at CBS!!!
Janette McClelland dang, girl, you raised Methodist and their own 10:30 kick times? haha.
Hell yeah.
We used to play this at football games for kickoffs in high school when in was in the marching band..
Rest in peace Phyllis George! A true pioneer and icon....!
Such a beautiful woman with that awesome smile...
The best NFL pregame show of all time.

My favorite NFL Theme. Bring back childhood memories.
It's not just the music that brings back memories how great the NFL was during that era it was also the pregame show and the announcers.
chills to this day....the best pregame show ever. growing up in long Beach, this reminds me of early morning nfl sunday action

All these great NFL themes were, of course, culled from the KPM and De Wolfe music libraries here in the UK - some of the greatest tunes ever!
This music was one of my relatively few pleasant memories of regular-season football Sundays in the late '70s, having grown up watching the Detroit Lions. (I usually didn't tune in on the weeks the Lions were blacked out at home, of which there were many.)

Because CBS covered the NFC and NBC had the AFC.
the Brown move to the AFC in 1970 it will be until 1998 that CBS will broadcast Brown away games again
