I've heard the brilliant versions by Mahalia Jackson, Harry Secombe, Stanford Olsen and The Celtic Tenors - but this one tops them all. Our Dad was famous for raising the roofs of the pubs in Middlesbrough when he sang this - and other classics - at Christmas in the 60's, 70's and the 80's. He'd have loved this version. Over the yrs have sung in choirs , domain etc,yrs there .one concert when David and Yvonne Kenny were singing, all of the women were just so enjoying watching .the conductor was ignored as we didn’t come in on time whoops. I always love that he does all three verses. Some renditions leave out the middle one, but when you consider the context of the song, it is a core concept. Besides, the "shadow of a cross arrose upon a lonely hill" has a good build and it is a good precursor to the third verse build which is even better.
