Voiceplay and The Trills did a great job with this song.

I feel like there is quite a difference between the two version, Nathan's sounded more natural as in something that came out while people would work on a deck or dock, whereas from the start of wellerman's version it sounded like something a bard would spread, more practiced, but less of a natural occurance, and overall less of a folksong. So basically sounds between something sung by many people, and something sung by someone who's livelihood is their voice.

To me Evans is where the trend originated and he jumped on the popularity to quickly capitalize on the path that opened up to him. Nothing wrong with that, it just took him out of the media that I consume. The Wellermen took what he popularized and stuck with the indie format, included many other singers and branched out into a much more organic (in my opinion) project that utilizes the best elements of the internet to create something new and (again, in my opinion) more interesting.

The Wellerman’s song to Misty Mountains is a must see reaction. You won’t be disappointed.

Evans is great as a solo act on this song. the Wellerman have great harmonics. even though its the same song its still a bit of comparing apples to oranges.
different approach but both great results.

Nathan is a Scottish postman, so it’s reasonable to assume the accent is natural.

The Wellermen sang it better. Now I first heard it by Nathan Evans and when I came across The Wellermen I fell in love with it.

No contest for me. Nathan Evans for the win. Yes, that is his accent. It's one of the things about him that I found endearing from the start. The original TikTok video just had a natural feel.. just a young guy messing around. While The Wellerman group version sounds great, it's to much camp for my tastes when compared to Nathan's. When Nathan sings it, I feel the history of the song and the men who went to sea and put their lives on the line. You talked about Nathan's version being repetitive and made a joke about the song that never ends which makes me wonder if you understand the purpose of these songs.

Omg yes! You said it perfectly. Nathan, for the win... and it's not even close!

Also, the never-ending loop is just the version on tik tok. Nathan filmed the full songs, and it's perfect!

The Hound and The Fox featuring Adam Chance (Home Free) did a cover of "Soon May The Wellerman Come". They did a fantastic job!

9:15, it sounds very cinematic for Game of Thrones. I kid you NOT!

The lead guy of The Wellermen is very theatrical like Jack Black. JB is always jumping around or flailing something or pointing at what he's singing about, etc., etc..

From what I'm guessing you're a tenor. And you hitting that was very good.

Please also listen to Nathan together with Santiano. They were many, many weeks on the top of the charts here in Germany. Best version ever!!!!

Nice reaction mate If you want harmonies and a high tenor that will blow ya mind , Check out Pentatonix , Its a 5 member accapella group , they have won 3 x Grammy Awards so far , have done multiple records , There is literally 5 to 10 years worth of music to check out , But Hallelujah is where most reactors start with Pentatonix , keep up the good work👍

I may not have the story exactly right but some or all of the WellerMEN guys were involved in the endless TikTok thing where people videoed themselves singing along with Nathan. I believe that at some point Nathan and these guys were set to do a professionally recorded version, but then Nathan signed with a label. That left the other guys to get together, without a label, and do their own version. I’m not completely certain but in the recording you played with Nathan, it sure sounds like either Bobby (beard) or Luke (hat) were singing bass, but maybe it’s just someone who has a similar sound.
There is also a version by Malinda (also with Bobby) and some other musicians including a percussionist who is absolutely fabulous. You definitely should check it out.
Anyway, Nathan got the whole mess started, so IMO he gets a LITTLE credit for every other version that can be found since that sea shanty trend got started. As for comparing, obviously the production values on Nathan’s were better (thanks to the label), but I really love Sam Pope’s acting, and I’m a huge fan of those thick harmonies and emphasis on the bass.
The WellerMEN recently dropped a professionally done video-The Parting Glass. It’s great-awesome vocals, just nice all around, but I like it better when you get to see the group singing-this felt more like background music to a movie. I hope they keep putting out videos because I really do think the group is awesome.
Meanwhile, Bobby (he gets around, musically 🙂) is also part of an a capella group called The Bass Gang, and they’re about to drop four new songs. Get ready for some bassy awesomeness!!
    Great reaction!!

Nathan's version, of the two, is much better.

His singing accent (roughly Glaswegian) is also his native accent - Daniel really should have researched this

I hate.. absolutely hate "The Wellerman's" version of "The Wellerman." I'm sorry, but I hate it. It sounds like something I'd hear on a kid's cartoon or on the "Wiggles."
Gritty isn't the word for their version. Overly produced. Boring. Weirdly enunciated.

    • @Hoodat_Whatzit
      @Hoodat_Whatzit ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have to admit, I pulled a face when he described that version as "gritty." Um.. no. Go listen to Nathan again please. I think it's the natural Scottish accent that does it for me. Plus Nathan has a fantastic voice.

@Hoodat_Whatzit yes! Exactly! I couldn't agree more! Nathan IS the Wellerman for me! It's raw, thickly accented, and perfect! Just a man beating on a guitar and singing his heart out!
