      @@apbt067 That's what I think happened. Even if the boss might have known, sometimes employees don't. He may have thought that the chemicals wouldn't get into the pond if he was cleaning outside but fish are extremely sensitive and even slight chemical changes to the water can have devastating effects. I don't keep koi but I have multiple 300g tanks in my home and have cichlids to a reef tank. I also have about 7-8 fish that have been with me for 10+ years. I have raised them from when they were just fry...it would absolutely devastate me if they died due to negligence. The amount of love and care that goes into cultivating the environment fishkeepers is immeasurable. This is just a very daunting learning experience.

    • @sk_wr
      @sk_wr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Pill Smith use what exactly? Softwashing? Koi fish? If you are asking why people softwash around koi fish I’m not sure honestly, hopefully you have good insurance and let the customer know ahead of time the risks. Covering the pond with a tarp is helpful but can also restrict oxygen.
      If your asking why people get koi fish I have no idea. In my opinion they are overpriced and mostly just a status symbol, but maybe they just like big fish lol

    • @WhiteWolfos
      @WhiteWolfos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Pill Smith If your hobby is into fish keeping, having a koi pond is very rewarding. They tend to reduce stress levels coming back from a busy day. Taking care of fish overall teaches you to have more discipline and care for others. It's also good when you want animals but live under restrictions (no dogs/cats etc) for whatever reason or just want to get home and relax watching a aquatic environment.
      To me I feel like koi are water dogs. They are very motivated for food, get excited when they see me (not anybody else) since I fed them and gave treats. I taught them to do a few tricks like spin on command, splash, kiss, dance, etc. If the temperature drops they'll be slower to react though. On their own they can play with each other and some will dig and move small decorations around. Before I lost my home I was training a Koi to fetch haha. They each had their own personalities. The new owner was very impressed with their warm personalities and aptitude in feeding and interactions. They would splash the surface when they saw him coming haha.
      Water maintenance & water cycling must be kept up as well as their environment and their health must be monitored but it is a joy to have them so it's worth it. It's more expensive to start since you need to buy lots of things but it levels down long term.

Sometimes the natural products are safe if they are applied in very still (no wind) and clear (no rain for a few days) weather, because the compound will break down, which is what makes it 'safer' but they can and do still cause harm if they haven't set and get into the system :/

The customer was _not_ happy but realized it wasn't intentional, they came to an agreement that he didn't have to pay for the fish if they didn't have to pay for the bridge, which was like 3 weeks worth of work and thousands in materials. It ended up costing him like $40k in time and material, a pretty big hit either way. Needless to say he is _very_ picky about choosing the right material around fish ponds now lol.

Probably won’t do another Coi pond job though because i was stressed the whole time despite taking adequate precautions.

    • @MrZachgonz

      Fish are very sensitive to chemicals so it doesn’t need to be harsh chemicals. I used to be a pretty dedicated fish keeper and part of a lot of forums. I’ve seen fish die from just the walls in the room being repainted during remodels. Any paint/chemical particles can really mess up their water and cause death.

      Softwater washing typically uses HCL (hydrochloric acid). It is from very basic training to never wash near pools, ponds, certain plants, and drains with harsh chemicals.
      Not only fish will die in ponds but it can erode certain plastics, linings and your equipment as well as affect soil. Same with pools. It can skyrocket phosphate and nitrate levels making it unlivable for fish, lizards, frogs, plants and other nearby life wherever it is affected. You need very low pressure to reduce splash when doing this type of wash but it works great on things like very old masonry.
      As for drains. If caught, the fees usually start at 50k.
      14k was only a fraction of her maintaince costs for a pond for those 20 years. The average maintenance cost is 3k (50-60$ a week) for ponds per year and 3-5k for pools per year. This is not including fish conditioning chemicals, food, medicines and general upkeep.
      In most cases like this only equipment costs/repair cost for the pond is paid.

    That’s just sad… especially if those Cue fish were as old as she said she would’ve had to cared for them and done so much work to ensure that they stayed healthy so they probably became really close pets to her. Like some people think fish are just like any fly around the house they’re not important or anything, but to fish keepers they can be as important as your dog is to you. They most likely appraised it for the pond equipment and not the fish at face value.
      I'm sure 14k is only a fraction of what she spent maintaining the pond and her Koi. The average pond maintenance is 3k a year not including koi food and upkeep.
      I feel bad for both parties. Spilling harsh chemicals near ponds, pools, certain plants and into drains is a big no-no. The person must've been really not paying basic attention. Drain fees go from 50k if you get caught so there's that. It affects the local freshwater systems.

      @@CogitoErgoSum67 if you can spend 20-100$ a week on your favorite hobby its probably average. Plus it's a good hobby that teaches you discipline and care among other things. I've seen people spend way more on games but anyways.
      A koi can be as cheap as 5$ but keeping it over time costs a bit. Fish keeping is very rewarding as they help lower stress levels coming back from a long day of work.
      The maintenance costs averages at 3k a year for most ponds or between 50-60$ a week.
      For what they gave her, it's definitely just equipment costs which is but a small fraction of what she spent over 20 years of care and maintenance. People get attached to their pets be it lizards, birds, fish, dogs, horses, cats, insects.
      Any of these animals can go from just a few cents to thousands of dollars. Sometimes it's love at first sight so you may be inclined and determined to get a certain animal or breed even if it costs a bit more.
      I love my water puppies just as much as my dogs. They get very excited to see me and it makes me happy watching them play and interact with me. I had them since middle school (they are muts so like 5-15$ each) but over the decade I've spent several thousand on them already.
      I can see why specific breeds of animals cost money especially for specific breeds of Koi at 20 years (some breeds can live even over 100 years). Many keepers trade equally valuable fish. It takes a very, very long time to develop certain breeds (generation of people passing on to their kids and so forth). So in this case those breeds of Koi cost alot of money. For the most part in the US, people don't spend that much on buying Koi fish it's just mainly enthusiasts looking for certain breeds.
      Like most pet owners -for most fish keepers it's not really about the money spent on them, but the fish and hobby itself.

    To be honest, that woman should have informed the cleaning guy about fish.
    I’m a koi fish keeper for the last 3 years and one of my biggest fears is some harsh or poisonous chemical (like bleach/weed killer/insecticide or something like that) being introduced accidentally introduced into the pond.
    One of my friends lost all his fish because he got his tank cleaned and the cleaning people used bleach.
    Hell another friend lost a bunch of fish because he changed all his water at once.
    So I always have to be super extra careful about the potential source of contamination.
    I’m sorry about the 15 year fish though. It must be devastating even if they get replaced.
