I saw Paul Newman race his Nissan Turbo at Mid Ohio in the summer of 1983. I got a chance to meet PN before the race, and he was a cool dude. I think it's cool that Adam Carolla is out racing this car, talking about it, and having fun. That's what it's all about! I don't think Carolla thinks he's the fastest guy at Laguna this day...he's just out there doing what many of us wish we could be doing if only we had the time, and/or cash.
PERFECT in-car camera for watching steering method and hand positioning...thx for sharing it. I'm going to use this clip as an example for what I need to see whenever I design steering wheel grips for my customers in road racing. When I worked with IndyCar/F1/NASCAR drivers, they'd always tell me how they held the wheel with utmost confidence. But, if the wheel had some wear revealing a contrary steering method, I'd show them some in-car footage and pull out the heat gun and redesign the grips at the next race. BTW, based on what I see in this clip, I'd design Adam's wheel more like my Lister Corvette's wheel with almost no wings, but with a ton of finger fluting on the backside with light flanges on the face in the home positions. I did Michael Schumacher's wheel with only mild wings, and I brought it to Berlin when I spoke at the steering conference...you can see it here, if anyone's interested: www.SteeringWheelTechnology.com
Adam, you're holding the car in on the corners. Look at T2 on that same lap. Your car started to oversteer/rotate in that corner as well. You've got the 'feel' where the car is going. Turning the steering wheel when the car has a head of its own will cause spin. That's what practice is for, educating your hands, eyes and seat as to where the car is headed and how much input is needed on the steering wheel, throttle or brake. Sometimes the best input is none. Your car is a beauty.
at 9:48 maybe the rear end hops a bit to the right? at 9:50 i see fast hands feeling where the car wants to go gently guiding it back to proper vectors
My dad worked for bob sharp for 10 years so when i grew up and still to this day ive dreamed of having that car... Huge nissan datsun fan...seen P.N. Kill it at limerock countless times its a shame to see that car getting passed lap after lap instead of doing the passing... And they put the high beams on so the SLOW guys move over!!!
His wheel is adjusted to be a little counter-clockwise even when the wheels are perfectly straight. This is common in race cars to improve gauge visibility since they don't go through the amount of design a street car goes through.
Senna once told a reporter who was claiming he drove wrecklessly that, if you see an opening and you don't take it then you're no longer racing. I think Adam has what it takes, but if he's going to second guess, then I don't why he's spending the time and money.
Sorry Adam are you going to groceries in that nice race car? You're early on most apex's and while you took notice of the Porsche's line in the cork screw you failed to notice that his late apex is the proper line over your early entry which left you late on acceleration and you weren't accelerating until the exit curbing when you should have been accelerating on the apex especially with a turbo lagged car which BTW you should have been trail braking with to keep up your rev's for quicker exit speed and throttle response.
P Newman ran Limerock in less >1 min in 750+hp GT at 80. Now Corolla drives what PN won 3 GT1 championships He LETS GO OF THE WHEEL when the car begins to break ON TRACK. He not only states/does early in vid like its "just a thing." Distracting with irrelevant racing line he tags a car and then powers off (listen see15:15) at apex. Porsche pull every apex. No driving school just STOP PLEASE. Wrong.NO MORE. PN's car!! HE then posts as racing-er with music&set up. Thought he could drive 100hp max
Stupid Porsche. Now I see it. I don't hate the car. Just hate people who drive them. Assholes. too much pride to let a Nissan pass eh.... Geezers.... Adam great car and good driving. Better luck next time.

Love that someone appreciated PLN's passion. Good on you Carolla!
Adam is a good sport. He has a better attitude than 90% of people in Vintage Racing!!
Z31s are one of my favorite cars and this is one of my favorite racecars of all time, cool to see it on the track and not 30yo footage!!!
Ace love the commentary while your racing its crack for car guys and racing junkies! keep it up
Nice video and I like the voice-over summary. I was thinking about attending this race....should've went.

that double tap of the wheel as she started going away is so sweet fast
Hey Carolla, This style of driver commentary is really cool. I could watch more of this stuff.
a legendary jewel of a car,

Man... So lucky. I love the Z31, let alone a full blown racing car!
Oh my God I wanna do this...so bad...
Also, Paul Newman rocks. Z FTW!
Good lord listen to that beast cam! I've always been a Toyota guy but I love me some Nissan too
stop holding back pass everything you can and if you need a tip hit the gas in the breaking zone- do it for Paul
10 times the fun of a "brand" track day! Kudos for keeping the faith!
at 9:48 maybe the rear end hops a bit to the right?
at 9:50 i see fast hands feeling where the car wants to go
gently guiding it back to proper vectors
were your tires warm enough to pass the M1? Good commentary. Interesting to see too that you're a hand-to-hand wheel driver.

How can you drive it with out the steering wheel being pointing straight when you are going straight?
Thanks for posting video.

inlineschool its a removable steering wheel. he didnt put it on straight. so its crooked when driving in a straight line...
is one cylinder bank still running low compression in this vid? rebuild the motor and run laguna seca again! maybe a couple of Borg Warner EFR6758 :D
A race car driver with the shift pattern on the dash???????????????? Oh MY GOD
That looked like a blast AC!
Adam, what size turbo is on the Z?
Is that car running a nissan dog leg 5 speed or a aftermarket trans?
Everyone in comments are "racing instructors"...
looks like a lot of fun
Second to a Porsche 935 in a 300z is pretty dam good in my book the 935 is a beast and one of the fastest cars in the world in its day
Senna once told a reporter who was claiming he drove wrecklessly that, if you see an opening and you don't take it then you're no longer racing. I think Adam has what it takes, but if he's going to second guess, then I don't why he's spending the time and money.
Who is Adam Carolla?
Thomas Brooklyn Host of a radio show called Love Line back in late 90s
Would take me all race to get use to that shift pattern
What car is that at 2:44?
zambimaru BMW M1
is this a z31 chassis or z32?
Last raced in 1988... Ima let you figure that one out for yourself. That and perhaps the taillights might give it away. DERP!
I think that is a tube chassis. Z31 engine though (VG30ET)
Adam Carolla /FilmBluff OPEN WINNING in NYC to submit for OSCAR Doc RULE 11. Do not let Paul Newman fans down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Adam for riding your wallet instead of mine !
That steering style lmao
Glad you didn't hit the wall Adam!
Stop moving your hands around on the wheel!
Good lines, great throttle response. Keep it up. Bee
I thought this guy did talk radio.
Holly shit, in whole race your moth isn't close
Damn! Nice work though
never change the position of your hands.. always at 3 and 9 o´clock. some times it looks like he is parking the car.
And then that happened....
WHEN IN DOUBT LET GO OF THE WHEEL
That's the final year of the 3rd gen Z, I believe
Technically 1989 is they switched half year from z31 to z32
VG30 power !!!

Cool
did he smoke a J before he got in the car?
Careful with Pauls car bud!
Z31 :D
I wouldn't mind getting kissed by a PLN racecar!
Wow! So many comments here I agree with, hey Adam let me drive the car and show you how it SHOULD be driven PLEEEEEEEASE?
👍🐻🤗
You probably shouldn't be allowed to drive that car...
