  • Helge Achenbach - art, power, greed.
A documentary about the ex-art advisor who earned millions.
Somewhere close to Düsseldorf. With our car we turned off the country road and now head towards a remote courtyard via dirt roads. We can already see sculptures on the meadow in front of the main building. These works of art are the harbingers of two enormously impressive days full of art, self-destruction and hope.
We're here to portray a man who made millions as an art consultant, knew artists like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein personally, and worked with names like Gerhard Richter, Andreas Gursky, Jeff Koons and David Chipperfield. We are here to portray a man who was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment as an art dealer and went to prison for cheating. Guilty. In at least 16 cases. Worth over 20 million euros.
Helge Achenbach didn't get enough of her neck. Abused his influence on the art market and ultimately lost everything. 10 years ago Helge Achenbach was cruising through downtown Düsseldorf in the Rolls Royce, was once President of Fortuna Düsseldorf and was able to welcome Madonna or Yoko Ono to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Today we meet him here. On a farm in the province. In the next two days we want to talk to him about his past, present and future. We really want to get to know Helge Achenbach.
We park in the courtyard of the farm, which is now the headquarters of the Culture Without Borders association. The association initiated by Achenbach promotes artists and gives artists a home here near Düsseldorf if they no longer have one themselves. Some of you are refugees, some are just very far from home.
When we arrive, Helge Achenbach is not yet on site. He was on the go. Was just visiting his friend Hans-Günther Wallraff. So we get to know Evelina Velkaite from Lithuania in the small kitchen in the Kaarster farm. Together with Jems Koko Bi, Armin Baumgarten, CBA and Yahia Alselo, she is one of the residents who work here at Culture Without Borders. We can live on the farm for the next few days. We get rooms, there is coffee in the kitchen; after our early trip from Tübingen this is of course a welcome start.
A few moments later, a tall white-haired man is walking across the courtyard. Helge Achenbach greets us openly and warmly. Up until now we had only been in contact by email. Suddenly standing in front of a man about whom you have read a number of newspaper articles and who has been judged many times is strange. You think you already know a lot about him, you have expectations. Nevertheless, we want to try not to get our own picture, but rather let this person act on us and find out who is behind the Helge Achenbach brand. We are experiencing a different person than the one in the media. In conversation, Helge Achenbach tells us that he wants to go to heaven if he exists.
In episode 6 of our documentary series freisein.documentary, we portray ex-art consultants, artists and art fraudsters Helge Achenbach.
    Have fun.
