Hundreds of South Africans dig for 'diamonds' - BBC News

  • Hundreds of people have descended on a small village in Kwa-Zulu Natal, digging for 'diamonds'.
    This comes after a man herding cattle discovered what he thought were diamonds more than week ago. His discovery has prompted people from other provinces to make the trek to join in the search. Some people have found what they believe are precious stones.
    Police are also at the scene but appear to be struggling to stop people from digging. The provincial government has described this activity as illegal mining.

    • @lenny108
      @lenny108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raisaapriliani2717 Right, diamonds are more widely available than ever before. But why are we trained to think diamonds are rare? De Beers maintained a monopolistic hold over the diamond market for several decades, controlling 75-85% of the diamond rough supply. They carefully released only enough rough diamonds to satisfy then-current demand, while continually adjusting the degree of rough diamond availability. Of course, this made prices escalate and reinforced the perception of diamond’s rarity. De Beers actually mined considerably more rough diamonds than they sold. They maintained a large warehouse of uncut diamonds in London. As a result, they weren’t allowed to do business in the United States and a few other countries.
