- The new-generation Mahindra Thar marked its India debut on the 74th independence day. And we were among the few lucky ones to get our hands on the vehicle. Though it was a short drive, the car impressed us on many fronts while more work need to be done in some areas. The new Thar 2020 gets two engine options - a 150bhp, 320Nm 2.0-litre petrol (for the first time) and a 130bhp, 320Nm 2.2L diesel. Both can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. The vehicle is based on the revised platform and gets multi-link suspension at the rear while the front remains independent. What makes it a pro-off road machine, for which it's known for are features like - 4x4 transfer case with 42:1 low crawl ratio, mechanical locking rear differentials, 42 degrees approach angle, 27 degrees ramp-over angle and 37 degrees departure angle. It also has massive 226mm of ground clearance and a water wading capacity of 650mm. All these tech/features will surely help make it even more competent off the roads. We'll try and bring a detailed off-road review of the vehicle as soon as we get our hands on it. Likely to be priced between Rs 10 lakh - Rs 15 lakh, the new Mahindra Thar will go on sale on October 2, 2020.

Great camera shots of the vehicle & background soundtrack! Nice to be able to see the colour options too in this video. A show of the soft-top open/close operation would have been Welcome. I wish the back seats had a 2nd step folding towards the side so the floor could be conveniently usable.

Fingers crossed they can export these models,would love to by one here in nz. Noticed theres no arm rest between the front seats, will be very uncomfortable on long trips.
You can always import 1 for your personal use. Please check the local homologation and emission norms prior to importing. As far as I am aware, Australia & NZ don't have any emission norms for highway vehicles.

Cons:
1. Front Grill- looks small and like mouse trap
2. Everything in rear seat area- dont know why Mahindra engineers cant design simple seat, fit and finish for 2nd row comfort. Its just pathetic quality.
3. Open wires for defogger, HMSL- seems they forgot during production and just pasted few exposing wires for defogger and high mounted stop lamp.
4. Rear wheel arch from inside- they pasted carpet on it and put some plastic screws to hold, why would do that. Why cant you put plastic mould to cover that area neatly??
5. No Fuel lid opening from inside. We still need to use the key to open the fuel lid.
