  • Todays video is pretty short and simple. I get a ton of comments asking about walleye rods and applications. In this video I talk about the 3 rods that I use the most for walleye fishing and what I use them for. If you are looking to expand on your walleye arsenal look for rods that have these same characteristics and you will be more successful on the water. Thanks for watching!

Tom Love your videos , Im recently retired and have been going out with a guide for over 20 years . I usually fishing the summer with him and often use the same technique ( Live Lindy rigs ) . I was wondering if you could make a video explaining the movement of Walleyes . In other words , Where do the Walleye go at different time of the year and what do they feed on . I often feel Im one step behind as far as trying to find them . Thanks and keep up the good work .

Joe Bucher did a video on comparing musky fishing rods to golfing. You can, but it is difficult to use one rod for all applications. When you are golfing, you have a bag of a number of clubs for different applications. This helps make sense to a lot of people.

I love my Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye Medium Like Extra Fast rod. I even caught a pike with it, was awesome. However, I don’t troll with it, I use it for jigging and the like. For trolling I use a St-Croix Premier Medium Heavy Fast because I often use deep lures or bottom walkers. Tried Lead Core for trolling, but I dunno, it’s not for me. Anyway, great video !

Hey Tom, Like how you cover the basics and let the viewer have the opportunity to cover their individual price range. Personally I own top of the line st. croix stuff. But the way you do it applies to alot of people. We need to get the young people involved, and we don't need dollar figures, keeping fishing from them. I am 57 years old and have been a sportsman all my life, quite successfully I might add, but as I have figured out you get to be good to a point where the challenge and reward is not quite there like it used to be. But, spending time with younger sportsman teaching and mentoring brings alot of the desire we had in our earlier careers right back. Your a young guy yet, but trust me you will understand later in life. This will help you not drift away from the sport.

I throw rapala countdowns size 7 and 9 as well as shallow shad raps size 7. I prefer a 6'6 to 6'10" medium light fast action. Thanks for another great video! What are your thoughts on an 8' moderate action rod for slip bobbers / lindy rigs / etc? Would that be too soft / spongy for a good, consistent hook set? Sometimes when I take friends or family out, I end up using my ultra lite for slip bobbers and while that is fun, it is extremely difficult to get a good hook set. That pole has landed me a few 25" walters though.

Coffee Break Tom Tech Time! I read braid can slice a groove into the eyelets on some St. Croix Rods. Do Elliot Rods have this issue?

I've caught thousands of walleye on my st. Croix rods, using braid, and gave never had a groove cut into the eyelets.

Good to know because I love my St. Croix PS66MLF for walleyes. Spooled my Tatula LT 2500-HX with 10lb Suffix Advance. With Tom Tips I have had a great year so far jigging, thanks to the Walleye Master of the Universe

I'm, guilty of having plenty of rods, over welhelming amount , jigs, plastics, and hard baits, mostly st Croix, and Shimano, gloomis, as You say, 3# are enough, assortment of jigs ,and hand full of plastic, is what, I'm all about, could have saved thousands. / Any one interested, Text, I probably have, it?

Calvin Monroe my uncle catches walleyes on ugly stix. I can’t stand them myself. Fenwick makes good rods. Daiwa RG are awesome rods for like $70

@@calvinmonroe2408 Fenwick probably has some offereings that may fit his description, probably not on the Ugly sticks, which are usually less balanced. I bet ugly sticks would work for trolling though, if you cant get the right length and action they may do well for that. Cabelas Whuppn Sticks maybe too for trolling. You may also look at Okuma brand rods. They are reasonable priced, and seem to do well. Ive got a few myself. Their trolling rods are way too beefy though, I dont recommend those. You should look at their Kokanee Rod, and their dead eye series. Their are a few others that might be good of theirs too. Check them out on FISHUSA.com.

@@shootermcgavin991 Ugly sticks are tough, but bulky and unbalanced for most applications. With the right action if they offer it, I'd use them for trolling, but that is probably it.
