  • The athletes face a wet, cold and blustery day one in Big Bear, but their excitement to compete outweighs the poor conditions. In DEKA Heavy, the weighted sled push quickly becomes many athletes’ Achilles heel. Tempers flare in the Special Warfare: No Guts No Glory PAST test when select competitors learn they must complete a swim in freezing waters even though they cannot win points.
    DAY ONE EVENTS:
    - DEKA HEAVY: Ten weighted functional fitness exercises, completed for time.
    - SPECIAL WARFARE: NO GUTS, NO GLORY: Spartan’s take on the Air Force Special Warfare PAST test (Physical Ability & Stamina Test), which consists of two swims, a 1.5 mile run, push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.
    -
Spartan Games: Battle of the Fittest
Sixteen athletes - OCR legends, functional fitness champions and more - enter a new battleground to compete for $50,000. Over four days in Big Bear Lake, California, they will fight through nine grueling challenges that test every facet of physical and mental fitness: obstacle racing, combat, trail running, mountain biking, and a few surprise challenges created with Air Force Special Warfare. Every athlete will be tested. Every athlete will be ripped out of their comfort zone. But only one will be The Fittest.
New episodes every Thursday at 8 pm EST.

There is an easy way to judge push-ups. You put a foam block down and the judge makes sure the athlete taps that with their chest. Every military and law enforcement agency does that either with a foam block or fist. Not sure why the Air Force didn’t use that standard…
Bullets don’t care about half push-ups either.

@@sryana8015 I’ve seen foam blocks used now in place of a fist due to covid. But typically, I’ve seen a fist placed underneath the chest area. Foam blocks are also used by men in place of touching a woman’s chest, so yes. There are ways to count and judge the full depth of a push-up.
In NO world do those push-ups shown in this episode count as full reps.

I love Lindsay, but there's no reason why she should have been allowed to accept a penalty over even attempting the sled. I know it's a strategic move, but the option to even write that into your strategy shouldn't have existed. She's literally a professional athlete. You can't do something, you get DQ'ed. It's like they deliberately set up the rules to cater to certain people and certain people only.
And some of those guys' push-ups were trashhhhhh I woulda no-repped each and every one

    Weeks positions: 2, 3, 2, 2, 1 = 10
    Coffin positions: 1, 2, 1, 5, 4 = 13
    Webster positions: 4, 8, 3, 1, 2 = 18

On a positive this is fun to watch I like the idea of it a lot. Not sure how the scoring works, it’s not a far test of fitness to say in certain events if you are incapable of doing one of the test you get a small time penalty while in another it means you completely fail and get 0. Also if you are swimming and unable to meet the standard of being under water for 25m means you fail then touching or kicking off the bottom during the surface swim should also be a fail not just a 30s penalty. I would also like to know how Hunter is not 2nd in the second event how did they score that? I get that different events can have different standards but these are huge variances which kinda seem to allow advantage for certain types of athletic abilities. In event 1 if the 5 min time penalty is the slap I think that can be ok but the athlete should have to at least attempt that test until the time cap is reached, even is that means they are standing there for most of the 5 min. Now that’s a penalty it breaks their rhythm and messes with their mental knowing they can’t do it. Just skipping and breezing on is lame.

💪🤘😎 with the weather as a factor; this has pulled on par with the CrossFit games.

CrossFit has minimum work requirements and actual movement standards.

@@jessicalhayes with Air Force PJs and Combat Controllers controlling the Standards for the tests, I don‘t think that your comment is warranted. You are right in that this comp is an invitational without a clear standard of who qualifies for an invite. The CF Games do have a clear path that even „unaffiliated „ athletes can take, as long as they pay their fees and perform to standard. That would be a really good thing for the Spartan organization.

@@WalksAlone Did you see the push-up standards they upheld?
They also didn’t show the majority of the reps for Deka heavy either likely because most of those didn’t meet the standard.
This is entertaining, but not on par with the CrossFit games whatsoever.

@@jessicalhayes I agree with you that the judging and standards have been terrible here. And they didn’t bother to explain the standards to the audience. This problem did not exist last year. However the CrossFit Games have their own problems (in my opinion), namely the dangerous, anything goes lifting form they allow to pass.

I had the opportunity to watch this episode. I get it has been very controversial since it aired. You got to have fairness for any contest in order to have validity. From strongmen to ultra marathon runners, there are rules and parameters. If those rules aren’t applied equally among the competition then it’s hurts the legitimacy of the contest. When it comes to day 1 of the contest. If you have a name DEKA HEAVY, you have to have heavy stations. A sled is hard to push depending on multiple factors; surface, sled quality(smooth or roughed up), weight on the sled, and conditions. Unfortunately it seemed like the grass was high and it was wet. Bad news for trying to push a sled. BUT this is “DEKA Heavy” it should be heavy! It should take extra strength and power in order to complete the entire course. So in this case, it would be better to say there is no time penalty granted for skipping the course, you need to complete it. If you can’t complete it, too bad, you get a 0. If I don’t complete the 20k marathon, I get a 0. You can’t be favored biased towards the endurance based athlete and not the strength/power athlete.
Also 225lbs on the deadlift for like 8 reps? Are you kidding me? At least 315lbs next time. If it takes their main guy Atkins 2 hrs then it takes him 2 hrs. Ancient Spartans were strong as hell. They carried around an 80-100lbs bronze shield and had a 15ft long spear. They fought shoulder to shoulder in phalanx formation. The closet thing to this is an offensive linemen in the NFL. You catch my drift yet.
Now for the second event, the whole Air Force PT test. You cant have a moving target when having standards. I’m huge on following the rules. If the rules say you can’t propel yourself in the water by touching the floor of the lake, then that is breaking the rules. Now, was there a standard for that penalty like a “no rep” or “time penalty”? It does seem like since the event was a “do it all or you get a 0” then I would lean to a “no rep” which would result in a 0 score for the competitors that broke that rule.
Lastly, Ryan Atkin’s push-ups were not push-ups, so he should get a 0 too.

Terrible reality show. Let me know when we can focus on the actual competition and not the drama of it all. No one cares what Watson thought of the weather 🤦‍♂️. You can't even tell who's winning or losing during the event for fcks sake.

like the competition, but Spartan's presentation is lackluster...This host should be edited out. He thinks he is interesting, and insightful, but has offered absolutely nothing. I would rather hear from the athletes talk about the challenges of each event.
Scoring is difficult to understand, and the way it is put together the organizers aren't sure about the scoring either.
