  • I thought I should treat myself some amazing hawker food after the 3 month long semi-lockdown in Singapore. So I headed off to Old Airport Road Food Centre. It is one of the most popular hawker centre among the locals and it has over 150 stalls to choose from. Of course my main objective is to have delicious food. But today, I also wanted to show you what's around this area. Tourists only come here for the hawker centre. What else does this area have to offer? Join me on today's journey.

I think you have discovered that Singapore really seems like just one big restaurant! Maybe all of South East Asia like this? When I was based in NYC I had two assistants that were from Thailand. We used to poke fun at them for how food-centric they were. They would start talking about lunch around 10:00am. Sometimes I would go looking for a stapler or scotch tape and open up a drawer at their desk and it would be like a small 7/11. Sauces/spices/dried snacks/plastic forks/napkins. The special treat was when they would sometimes cook lunch for all of us....so GOOD.

Yes. I would have a drawer in my office all stuffed with food :p. I would also bake or cook for my friends and colleagues.

one of the best hawker centers in Singapore!! My grandmother used to live near here and I came here every Sunday to visit her. It was so noisy and hard to get round when they were working on the MRT... Dakota Crescent is also directly opposite, one of the oldest remaining residential estates in Singapore (though the buildings now stand almost empty.)

Don't worry Ghib, we get excited when we are here too. The popularity of this place has to do with Singaporean culture of weekend breakfast runs that most local families take it as a time to gather during the hustle bustle of the work week. The relatively quiet neighbourhood with the disproportionally large hawker area, parking facilities, easy access via mrt makes it a golden spot for hawker culture to thrive. Most people that visit Old Airport Road don't even stay anywhere near & it helps that the nearby parks, sports facilities & Singapore Sports Hub gives a good reason to visit for their meals after earning their calorie deficit through working out. Hope that helps to understand why this place has such significance.

You're near the national stadium area - which would be deserted now because of Covid - but if you've got a bicycle you could cycle down to the Tanjong Rhu condo area and then from there to the East part of Gardens by the Bay. Alternatively you could go in the other direction and walk to Geylang which deserves a couple of episodes on its own.

Hi Ghib, my office is 5 mins away from old airport, some stalls open in morning till early afternoon, some late morning till evenings and some open only from evening till night, I recommend the briyani stalls, lamb soup, lor mee, bedok dumpling meepok (near the lamb & next to of the lor mee stall) and wantan mee. I used to like the fish slice noodle but the old ojisan no more, after that standard drop never eat fish soup anymore, these is another stall with fish soup but not my personal favorite, I only eat that if I sore throat. Oh yeah, the hor fun next to the famous lor mee also not bad. Lol

During the 7th month of the lunar month in the chinese calendar, it will be our hungry ghost festival. Thats when they burn offerings... paper money etc to their dead. By the way, the chinese calendar is different from the english calendar. So take note in your research.
We use to allow people to burn their offerings at designated places but the ashes fly everywhere... so the bins you saw were introduced to prevent all that ash flying around.

Ghib, the old airport is about 500m away in the west direction from the hawker centre. The airport is still there now occupied by tge peoples asdociation. The hawker centre vicinity has those rustic low apartments demolished about 20yrs back and now sky scrapers hdb

Looks like you went in the afternoon? Most of the famous hawker centres like Old Airport Road and Lorong Ah Soo and Pek Kio close after breakfast / lunch hours.

The block of flats you pointed out is more than 60yrs old. The stretch of Old Airport road was the runway when it was Kallang Airport. The most popular lor mee stall is Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee. Diagonally across n opposite the hawker centre are all the old flats which are more than 61yrs old. Now they’re painted grey. For many years they were in red .. color of bricks . These old flats were built during the Lim Yew Hock days. Back in the 1950s the blocks were numbered odd on one side of the road n even on the other side. One of these blocks along Dakota Cresent was featured in a local Chinese drama n also a program about old playground on Channelnewsasia. If you walked down the main road there’s a wet market and a smaller hawker centre. Some of the hawker stalls as well as shops on the 2nd floor at the hawker centre that you visited were originally from this wet market. 1 such hawker is Cho Kee wanton mee.
