This is like a rescuing starving human on an island, feed him back to shape and drop him back on the same island again for him to fend himself. Wildlife carer would never leave a lonely Tawaki Penguin back into the wild again to fend for itself to travel 1000km back home. You should have started a go fund me page to fly them back to their habitat again.
There are caring people everywhere, in all economic classes and all occupations. I wish that the media would give their work a proportionate percentage of news coverage so that people wouldn't have distorted perceptions of life.
We moved thousands of critters off island from Puerto Rico and the VI after Irmaria hurricanes. Aid workers, families leaving -- seems like everyone left with an animal that had a destination in the States with either a rescue or to get them to their owners or new owners, etc. Seems it would up their chances dramatically to be reunited with a flock....

Oh my god look at that baby standing next to his favorite human on the beach! That is just a beautiful thing to see. I would be a MESS worried if they made it or not. What an angel this woman is.
Its an incredible experience, I had a "Blue " penguin walk up to me while I fishing on Macassar beach on False Bay Cape Province. I put my T shirt over it, picked it up, it was ice cold, so held it for a while then put it in my backpack to warm up, and took it to the local representative of SANCOB in Cape Town. They fed it and cared for it then released it a short time later. Unbelievable, but true!
A lot of animals bolt when released. It's amazing how this one stuck around almost as if it expected Tracey to swim off as well. Amazing story. I photographed some of these guys preening in the rain while floating in Milford Sound in 2014. Hopefully he will make it back there!

But, she knows more than I do, so... I just rehab dogs & feral kitties. ;)

It's literally called imprinting. It happens with young wild animals who require a parental figure to survive and develop. Stop treating wild animals like humans.

This was so emotional. Any wonder Tracey lies awake at night! He looked like he didn’t want to leave his mum. The thought of him swimming on his own, no family. I hope he makes it. 😢 as I write this, five days after this news reel, I’m imagining Mr Penguin is still swimming towards NZ.

I love how he knows to duck before the waves break. But why could he not be banded and transported back to NZ? Especially given how threatened the species is? And who says he's strong enough to make such a journey on his own? This doesn't make sense. My heart goes out to him. His odds of making it seem so slim, and there are better ways to get him back there.

That brought tears to my eyes. Little baby seemed a little apprehensive and so alone but he really wanted to go at the same time. It looked like he wanted her to go with him. It is literally allowing your child to go into the wide open seas, and never knowing what is going to become of him. May she be blessed for putting her heart and soul into helping these penguins.
Goodness. How heartbreaking to set free this penguin you have nurtured back to life. It’s bad enough giving a fostered, once abused dog to a permanent home! One invests so much emotion in these poor animals, it is always an excruciating wrench to set them free, even knowing that their lives will be better, or, in this case, that you have given this penguin its best shot. You have my total respect and admiration.

I've seen wildlife experts who are observing penguins witness and get close to a stray penguin and they refuse to intervene and help the penguin. It's such a frustrating thing to watch. I'm glad you helped the penguin.

Great video There’s a similar great story in Brazil of a fisherman who helped a lost hungry penguin. And the penguin has been coming back to see this fisherman year after year.

Why can't there be an arrangement with New Zealand wildlife protectors for transport of the pinguins back to New Zealand? I bet an airline would do it for free --just for the positive publicity.
Yes you could have done that because you'd known that it was natural, it was for the best, it was in penguin's best interests. It would be not about you but about those you rescue.
I hope this little pinguin made his own way in the sea and escaped from all the dangers. He looks scared and not sure if himself. This lady is remarquable. I don't know if I could have released him instead of keeping him safe. 😢

Why do you think these birds are starving? As a direct consequence of humans. Saving one makes little difference then sending him off to swim thousands of miles to NZ means he probably never made it.
I love penguins. I have always felt more at home in the water than land. They always look so happy and carefree in the water... the same as I do. We are kindred spirits.
Get volunteers to source funds to ensure they make it home. Fundraising for a good cause. Also, I'm sure some companies in the transportation industry would be willing to help. I'd chip in a few bucks and so would thousands of other people.

Apparently, both Air NZ and Qantas offered to fly him home, but, unfortunately he didn't have his Covid Vax, so it wasn't allowed.
