  • A real big classic touring bike from Honda based on the Africa Twin. We tested it with DCT and normal manual transmission in the same time.

Excellent review, thanks. However, I think you are criticizing the DCT a bit unfairly. Your test of it automatically downshifting was a situation where you rolled on the throttle only a bit so the DCT didn't realize you wanted to downshift. If you had cracked open the throttle more it would have downshifted. Also, you fail to mention that you are in total control of the DCT; if you want a lower gear just flick the paddle shifter on the left handlebar as many times as you want to drop down as many gears as you want. That's what you did with the manual transmission bike: you chose a lower gear, then a lower one and finally first gear. The DCT will do that as well, either by giving it full throttle or flicking the paddle shifter.

My lady a CTX 700 w/ DCT. We both hated it. Other than the unwieldy, difficult DCT, the bike was really good. However, the DCT was so uncooperative, she sold it in about a year.

I've had my NT1100 DCT for a year now. D mode is a complete waste of time as it changes up far too soon. For normal riding I use S1. The trick is to help the automatic shifting out with the occasional manual shift using the paddle shifters. If I want a sportier ride on some winding back roads then I use S2 mode. It does take some getting used to but you're used to it, it's great and I wouldn't want to back to a manual bike. Plus of course you can ride in manual mode and change gear with the paddle shifters.

Best review of DCT vs 6 Speed. We can’t yet buy the NT 1100 here in the US, but when we can I plan to trade my NC 750x 6 speed. Love the NC, but I do a fair amount of touring and the 100 hp would be welcome when passing on Interstate highway’s. Thanks again from a new subscriber.

I am more interested in where to get those spectacles!! It's very unique, and as someone who has worn glasses for the past 20yrs+ I can see why it's designed that way.
Anyone can share links/websites on this type of glasses?

Great review and honesty about the transmission. I love reviews that have no unexplained loyalty. I'm not sure if Honda are lowering their quality. I also think the instrument display is over complicated as are the switches. Thank you.

Great review, appreciate your insight and information from your test rides. It sounds like a great bike but the one place I see Honda has failed, in this class of touring bike it is the only one without a shaft drive and that is a big fail. My last three bikes have had shaft drives and I have no desire to go back cleaning and lubricating chains again.

Excellent and thorough review! The static view of the two bikes shows they have different tyres. Is this simply because Honda uses either of two suppliers or does the DCT version use a different tyre from the standard transmission?

cant be easy when you borrow bikes and the owners are watching your reports .....like you ive had a test of the nc750 with dct and although im not a big fan it worked pretty well on that machine it was reasonably dynamic and totally understandable in heavy traffic so i didnt disloike it till pushed really hard which to be fair is not what its for so i was pretty sure the 1100 would be decent ish .now although id prefer a manual i though id get a decent feel for the bike with the only demo they had with dct ...i wanted to try a manual 1100 but all they had was a dct ....i was shocked how bad it was beyond awful sucked all the joy out of what i think could be a nice bike ..its as u suggest confused in any modes and doesnt know what to do ..the only thing it does well is when youy pin it in a straight line from standstill ....the one i had was changing to 6th at 35mph in D mode and would not kick down on the gas it just tried to shake to peices in 6th rather than give ypou third or forth where it should be ..in sport mode it refused to shift to third at 50mph on even throttle ...going down the box was a disaster light years to late for any type of sports riding and slow junctions get a clonk into 1st gear where on amanual i may use 2nd or even third with bit of clutch ...only putting in to manial and using the paddles made any sense ......so what is the bloody point ? ......terrible awful sytem on this bike ... anyone with pulse must dispair at this disater of a set up.....i do think the bike may be pretty nice in a manual version and the comfort and the handling were good but after half an hour i just wated to drop a match in the petrol tank and get a taxi ..... put simply who ever signed off that dct programing on the 1100 should be taken out and shot.....im no luddite i like to try new tech but this is so wrong i had to check it wernt april 1st

This is very important to myself as well. The first generation DCT on the Africa Twin wasn’t very good, the newest version is a huge improvement. Before I’d buy the NT I’d want to make sure the DCT has the improved functionality. We need more information about this feature.

That windscreen adjustment is an embarrassment for Honda, how archaic and inconvenient. One handed adjustment has been available on several bikes for years, how did they go backward from previous model and create a design that requires you to stop and get off the bike to make an adjustment? Complete Failure Honda!!
